Day 2: Siem Reap

Today your private guide and driver, will show you a full day of historical adventures, as you're being whisked away to see the breathtaking architecture and natural setting of one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. The different sites of Angkor cover around 250 square miles, including the forested areas. It features ruins dating back to a period between the 9th and 15th century, all sculpted in the distinctive Khmer style. As you approach the park, you will first see the South Gate of Angkor Thom. A walk along a half a mile trail past the walls that lead to a hidden temple is optional, but your guide will definitely ensure that you see the amazing temple areas of Bayon and Baphoun, as well as the Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break and have lunch inside the park before you head over to the grey-stoned jungle temple of Ta Phrom. Here you enter a mysterious world, as tree stumps seem to grow out of the temple and roots crawl up its walls. For many people this is the highlight of Angkor. The most famous part of the park is, of course, Angkor Wat, known to visitors around the world. Finish the tour with a peaceful sunset, as shades of violets, oranges, and pinks spread across the sky. This private tour includes transportation, an English-speaking guide, lunch, water, and towels.

This evening you will be picked up from your hotel by tuk tuk, to visit the Phare Circus Tent, located just outside of town. Enjoy a show at what is called the Cambodian Circus, which starts at 8 pm, and lasts about an hour. Phare is a Cambodian non-profit art organization founded in 1994 by eight young Cambodians, returning from refugee camps along the Thai Border. The purpose is to improve the development of local communities by providing education and professional artistic training. The shows are constantly rotating depending on the time you visit. Transportation by tuk tuk and entrance tickets are included.

Day 3: Siem Reap - Banteay Chhmar

You will be picked up at your hotel and then start the drive with your private driver and guide to the exquisite 12th century Temple complex of Banteay Chhmar. Listed as one of the ‘Four most threatened sites in the world’ the complex has seen severe looting over the years, but now due to more interest from the outside world the temple now rests peacefully.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the community before starting to explore the temple ruins of Banteay Chhmar on foot. Although the temple is being gradually reclaimed by nature, the size and minute details remain incredibly impressive. A picnic lunch will be served at the west gallery close to one of the Angkor era’s most amazing carvings, the Avalokitesvara which depicts a 32 armed figure.

After finishing your picnic lunch, you will take a short trip to the other side of the village where you can observe another astonishing temple. Children play among the ruins and local villagers come to wash their clothes and bathe in the reservoir surrounding the temple. Returning to your camp you will refresh yourself with a cold drink while watching the sun go down over the temple.

Tonight the local community will prepare a meal for you onsite using as many local ingredients as possible. You’ll dig into your exquisite local meal overlooking the temple facade in a clearing lit by torches (weather permitting). A traditional band from the local village will serenade you with traditional Khmer tunes. When the musicians depart, you’ll be able to settle into your tent and enjoy some free time before falling asleep in comfort.

Accommodation: Banteay Chhmar Tented Camp

Located only 100 meters from the Banteay Chhmar Angkorian ruins, two spacious tents give an immersive experience of sleeping in the shadow of the temples. The luxury tents allow for a unique travel experience for adventurous travelers at one of the most beautiful attractions in Cambodia. Locally sourced durable furniture and the use of glass water bottles to replace plastic ones add to the sustainability commitment of the tented camp. The custom-designed tents are high quality Gore-Tex and allow substantial comfort including toilet facilities. Villagers cook on site using as many local ingredients as possible. Preparations were excellent - we really appreciated the attention to detail. The VIP Visa handling in Vietnam & Cambodia was much appreciated also. Guides were outstanding - particularly Borin in Cambodia.

  • Charles M. — September 22, 2017 — Asia

We had a GREAT time on this tour with our granddaughter. All the tour guides were knowledgeable. Thanks for planning this great trip for us.

  • Levi P — August 22, 2017 — Asia

Used Kensington Tours to book my honeymoon in the foreign speaking country of Thailand. It was great to not have to worry about transportation or accommodation. Our itinerary was amazing but the best part was probably our English speaking guides. We had three separate guides and each of them became like close friend to us. The travel was long but I wouldn't trade our experience in Thailand for anything.

  • Karen K — August 22, 2017 — Asia

I went to private tour w Kensington to Japan for 3 weeks last month. It was incredible. My daughter was studying in Niigata so I wanted her to hook up with me periodically throughout my tour to see all the highlights of Japan. It worked out perfectly. I cannot say enough about my and my daughter's experience with Kensington Tours. A trip of a lifetime.
