Day 2: Phnom Penh - Koh Kong

Transfer from Phom Penh to Koh Kong with a private vehicle and English-speaking guide. The transfer is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Your day, depending on the tide, starts with a cruise taking you deep into the mangroves to experience a rare glimpse of life among the fishing communities that live off the natural bounty of this watery paradise. Drinks will be served en route as you glide down the waterway to your fishing village destination to spend time with these shy but friendly people. While the men tend their boats, the womenfolk patiently mend their nets and children play tag and football in the narrow alleyways between the stilt houses. BBQ lunch on the beach will be served after visiting the pagoda, a school and a few villagers’ homes. You can then experience a glimpse of life among the mangroves from the boat before heading back to the comfort of 4 Rivers Floating Lodge.

Accommodation: 4 Rivers Floating Lodge (3*)

Away from the tourist trails and archeological sites, there is a Cambodia of unspoilt virgin forest, rare orchids and the calls of birds of paradise. To capture this ecological miracle requires an environmentally friendly resort and the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge, with its rainforest and river location fits the bill perfectly. It’s unlike any other tourism facility in the region and seeing the floating white tents, for the first time, when you round the bend in the river is almost magical. The tents are luxurious but blend perfectly into the natural setting. The use of wood has been minimized and solar power is used where possible. Amenities include a bar/restaurant, a small library, shaded seating on the deck, and kayaks that are great for excursions down the river. There is, however, no Wi-Fi.

Day 3: Koh Kong

Your day, depending on the tide, starts with a 45-minute boat ride past Tatai village to the falls. Turning on to a tributary, you head into the heart of the Cardamom jungle to the far-off sounds of exotic birds and its secretive wildlife. Within minutes, you are at your journey’s end, gazing down into the turbulent waters of the falls. Soon it is time for lunch, maybe a few moments for a hydro-massage and a refreshing drink as you find some shade for a picnic and open your senses to the sights and sounds of the jungle. After leaving the falls you might stop at the mouth of a small river where you can paddle by kayak to a traditional Cambodian farm to, again depending on the season, admire rice fields and fruit trees.

Day 7: Sihanoukville - Kep

Transfer from Sihanoukville to Kep with a private vehicle and English-speaking guide. The transfer is approximately 2.5 hours.

Optional / Not Included

Often overlooked in favor of its neighbors’ more popular Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, Cambodian food has recently garnered praise from chefs around the world for its use of fresh spices and unique blend of contrasting flavors and textures. If interested, an optional private cooking experience will give you a better understanding of the traditional cooking techniques. With a visit to the Crab Market, you will learn to identify local ingredients and understand the importance of seasonality in Khmer cooking (many ingredients are only available during certain months of the year).

Whether you opt for an introductory 2-hour course or a more complete half-day cooking experience, your private Chef will guide you through the various methods of Khmer food preparation. Everything is made from scratch, with only the freshest ingredients, and can be tasted and enjoyed at the end of the cooking session.

NOTE: All sessions are conducted in English and take place within the landscaped gardens of the Knai Bang Chatt Resort. Guests receive a recipe card to take with them for each dish that they make. Please contact your travel consultant if you would like to pre-arrange a private cooking experience.

Accommodation: Knai Bang Chatt (4.5*)

The exclusive seaside Knai Bang Chatt resort can be discovered in the enchanting coastal town of Kep, on the southwest coast of Cambodia. The lush and private grounds house a collection of completely remodeled and expanded colonial villas, creating a unique seaside destination. Appreciation for the elements and the ingenuous integrity of natural objects can be found in the polished teak wood beds, natural earthy tones, and imperfect ceramic lamps and vases. Throughout the property, trees, pebbled pathways, and natural bamboo screens define the open space and time-weathered wood is transformed into seating and dining areas that blend seamlessly into the relaxed and beautiful surroundings.

Day 8: Kep

Spend a full day exploring Kep and appreciate why its popularity is based on taking it easy rather than a long list of activities. Still, on this tour you will have an active day of exploration. Depart in the morning, after breakfast with your local guide, on a hike through the beautiful Kep National Park. A well preserved natural sanctuary, the park has pristine jungles teaming with birds, reptiles and monkeys. This 4.5 mile walk on well-maintained trails and offers, at a place called Sunset Rock, great views on the town and coastline. Meeting up with your driver again, it’s lunch at the local crab market, the classic meal when visiting here. Kep was a high-roller resort in the Sixties, and after lunch you can see the ruins of colonial French villas that are left as a reminder of that period after the Khmer Rouge destroyed them. End the day visiting the local temple with its commanding views of the surrounding area and ocean. Perhaps receive a monks blessing for a safe onward journey before returning to your hotel or getting dropped off at the Sailing Club for sunset cocktails.

  • Kenneth D — November 09, 2017 — Asia

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Because we traveled in several cities we had many different guides. They were all very good, with some being outstanding. We would like to especially commend our Beijing guide, Jerry Wang, for his expert and very personalized guidance.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!

  • Cynthia H — November 07, 2017 — Asia
