Day 3: Siem Reap

This morning, your private driver and English-speaking guide will take you on a journey through the stunning countryside near the mysterious waterfall at Phnom Kulen (or Kulen Mountain), considered to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Located roughly 30 miles north of Siem Reap, Kulen is now a protected area and received World Heritage status from UNESCO in 1992.  Archeologists have located some 30 temples at Phnom Kulen, using helicopter-mounted lasers to measure variations in ground height through dense vegetation. It is widely viewed as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire and functioned as an important quarry for the temples of Angkor.

The site is also known for its carvings, representing fertility, and its waters hold special significance to the people of Cambodia. Just a few inches under the surface of the water, over 1000 carvings are etched into the sandstone riverbed. The bas-reliefs also include a stone representation of the Hindu god Vishnu and because of that these waters are considered holy. Another stop on your visit is Preah Ang Thom, which houses a big statue of Buddha. Here the river ends with a beautiful waterfall. After a refreshing swim in water that flows through the falls, you will have a local Khmer lunch and relax a little before you continue the trip via motorbike, with a guide, to visit two distinct life-size stone elephants deep in the jungle.

On the return to Siem Reap, we pay a visit to the Cambodia Land Mine Museum. A child soldier named Aki Ra was forced by the Khmer Rouge to lay thousands of landmines during his childhood and has now devoted his life to remove them. So far, he has removed over 50,000. His facility is part of the Cambodian Landmine Museum, but it also serves as an orphanage, school, and clinic for children that survived landmines. Your day will finish with a gorgeous sunset view at Pre Rup Temple. The beautiful rusty-red hue of the laterite stone and brick of the temple is accentuated during sunset and stands in brilliant contrast to the lush green of the jungle in the distance.

Enjoy this journey with private transportation and English-speaking guide. Included are entrance fees to the temples, picnic lunch, cool water, and towels.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Because we traveled in several cities we had many different guides. They were all very good, with some being outstanding. We would like to especially commend our Beijing guide, Jerry Wang, for his expert and very personalized guidance.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
