Spirituality is a broad concept with room for many interpretations. In general, it includes a sense of connection to something bigger than us and a better understanding of the human spirit or soul. Spirituality and India have much in common. You might say that it is an essential ingredient in the country’s overall makeup and a strong character trait. This journey will connect you with some of its most devotional places.

Start your trip in Delhi, where tradition and modernity live happily side by side. Explore Delhi's spiritual side, where Hindu Temples, Sufi shrines, Mosques and Sikh Temples coexist in the city's rich tapestry. Varanasi is a key part of this trip, after all, it is one of the holiest places in the country and a quintessential part of any spiritual journey through India. Taking a boat ride along the Ganges before dawn when the entire place is bathed in a honey-colored glow is enchanting. The scenery along the ghats – the stone stairs leading down to the water – is astonishing. It's one of the most amazing experiences you might have on this trip: People taking a dip fully-clothed, others doing laundry by banging clothes and bedsheets on the stone stairs, and holy men sitting on a rock in deep meditation.

Continue your spiritual journey to Amritsar and get ready for a tour of the Golden Palace, the holiest shrine of Sikkhism. It rises out of a man-made lake and everybody regardless of cast, creed or race is welcome. It's open 24 hours a day and if you are hungry, you can have a meal at the world's largest free community kitchen. Then, don't miss the Wagah Border Ceremony – between Amritsar in India and Lahore in Pakistan – which includes the lowering of the flags, amazing goose-stepping by both country’s border guards to add an intriguing entertainment angle. In 1959, a young, bespectacled Buddhist monk secretly escaped from his home in the Himalayas. With a few supporters, he traveled through the rugged mountain terrain towards freedom and safety. This young monk was, of course, the 14th Dalai Lama. India's then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru granted the Tibetan exiles a home in Dharamshala a month later. They have lived here ever since, and it is also the next stop on your trip. Enjoy the glorious vistas, snow-clad mountain ranges, the numerous streams and cool healthy air, plus the aura of peace that pervades the town.

The final stop on this spiritual journey takes you to Rishikesh. The Beatles visited here in 1968 and were seduced by its mystical environment. Perhaps, you will be too. Rishikesh is practically synonymous with yoga. Signs for yoga classes are ubiquitous. The city's focal point, though, is the Ganges and your private guide will take you to Lakshman Jhula, the view of which from the ghats below is quite stunning. Better still, of course, is a walk across this man-made bridge and let your guide explain why it is historically and mythologically important.

Day 2: Delhi

Religion is integral to daily life in Delhi – a city as diverse as its people, their beliefs, cuisine, culture, and quirks. The fabric of the city is interwoven through the tremendous variety of temples that make up some of Delhi’s most interesting sites. Meet with your private guide and driver and start with a visit to Swaminaryan Akshardham complex, a 21st-century temple dedicated to the city’s Hindu majority. The complex offers a glimpse into India’s lengthy history as well as traditional Hindu life and is home to excellent modern exhibitions on Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture.

From here, drive through some middle-class and upscale residential neighborhoods of Delhi, and watch daily life unfold from the comfort of your private vehicle. Stop for a visit to a local market, bustling with activity as locals shop for clothing, bags, bangles, trinkets and daily needs. Break for lunch (not included), then continue driving to the bustling Nizamuddin neighborhood to visit the tomb of the 13th-century Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. His shrine is popular with visitors of all faiths, and the dargah is visited by thousands of pilgrims each week. Located in the Muslim section of Delhi, the lanes leading to the tomb are bustling with life – lined with shops and stalls hawking Mughlai cuisine.

End with a visit to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a prominent Sikh Temple near Connaught Place. The Sikh faith combines elements of Hinduism and Islam into its own unique identity. The bustling temple houses a community kitchen staffed by volunteers that serve at least 8,000 people daily. If you are interested, it is possible to volunteer at the temple during the meal service or join in a simple traditional langar vegetarian lunch at the temple with the community. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Day 3: Delhi - Agra

Meet with your private driver and settle in for a transfer from Delhi to Agra. Approximate driving time is 4 hours.

A stunning monument to love, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Taj Mahal has captivated the hearts and minds of travelers for centuries. Meet your private guide and driver for a private tour of this exquisite example Mughal architecture, crafted entirely out of white marble. Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who passed away during childbirth, the iconic mausoleum rises above a well-manicured garden. The inside of the Taj Mahal is equally stunning, with elaborate inlay work comprised of precious and semi-precious stones.

After your leisurely exploration of this New 7 Wonders of the World, continue by car to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort, a red sandstone fort built on a bend of the Yamuna river. The Mughal Dynasty fort served as the main residence of the emperors until the capital was shifted to Delhi, and is an impressive monument with a rich architectural history. Emperor Shah Jahan was once imprisoned inside of Agra Fort, and the tower of his imprisonment offers views of the Taj Mahal in the distance. At the end of the visit, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Accommodation: ITC Mughal (5*)

Sprawled over 35 acres of luxurious gardens, and in close proximity to the Taj Mahal, ITC Mughal is a fitting tribute to the great Mughal builders of the past. The only Indian hotel to have won the prestigious Aga Khan Award for its excellent representation of Mughal architecture, the property boasts the 'Khwab Mahal' wing - Palace of Dreams. The opulent rooms and suites that resemble Miniature Palaces recreate a paradise for the contemporary Mogul - full of splendor and perfection which was the hallmark of the Mughal Dynasty.

Day 4: Agra - Varanasi

Early this morning, meet with your private driver and guide, and set out for a memorable sunrise viewing of the Taj Mahal at dawn. The sun begins its ascent over the nearby hills and bathes the incredible white marble monument in pale pink, offsetting the red sandstone mosque with warm hues of orange and red. Walk through the compound surrounding the Taj Mahal as the sunrise’s spectacle plays out against the dramatic backdrop of the marble dome, displaying the changing colors in the compound’s reflecting pools. The early morning mist off the adjacent Yamuna River creates a stunning mythical haze around the UNESCO World Heritage Site if the weather conditions are just right. After your visit, return to your hotel by private vehicle for breakfast.

Meet your driver for an airport transfer with private vehicle, driver and English-speaking assistant.

The Aarti Ceremony is a devotional Hindu ritual performed at dusk on the banks of the Ganges, using fire as an offering to, the affectionately referenced, Maa Ganga, goddess of the holiest river in India. Varanasi, also known as Benares and Kashi (City of Life), is one of the three holy cities - Rishikesh and Haridwar are the other two - where this event happens every day. Usually, a small oil lamp made of clay adorned with a candle and flowers is lit and floated down the river. It's a beautiful sight that takes place every sunset at the holy Dasaswamedh Ghat. Young Hindu priests, all draped in saffron-colored robes, perform the highly choreographed ritual on an elevated stage facing the river. Clouds of incense fill the air, while priests chant and wave incense sticks in elaborate patterns or circle large flaming lamps that create a magnificent spectacle of colors against the darkened sky.

The ritual lasts a little less than an hour, after which your private guide takes you to a waiting boat and boatman to experience Varanasi’s night views as observed from the river. The most important and, a potentially unsettling one, is to see the burning funeral pyres you encounter on the way. You can witness cremations as your boat floats gently past, revealing a ritual that is memorable in its rawness, simplicity, and completeness. It is helpful to hear your guide explain the Hindu believe that if a deceased’s ashes are laid to rest in the Ganges at Varanasi, it allows their soul to be transported to heaven and thus escape the cycle of rebirth. A tour with an intriguing close-up view of a quintessential Varanasi experience.

Accommodation: Nadesar Palace (5*)

Nadesar Palace is situated in one of the oldest living cities of the world, on the banks of the river Ganges. Nadesar Palace has hosted royalty, statesmen and celebrities since 1835. The name Nadesar is derived from the Goddess Nadesari, whose shrine is located in the front of the Palace. Set amidst verdant gardens, mango orchards, marigold and jasmine fields, Nadesar Palace is a haven of peace and tranquility. Works of art from the Maharaja’s collection decorate the walls of the Palace’s 10 luxurious suites. Embellished with original pieces of furniture refurbished to recreate the atmosphere of a bygone era, the décor of the rooms is intended to evoke the colours of marigolds, jasmines, and pale pink lotuses that are offered to the holy Ganges.

Day 5: Varanasi

Mark Twain once said this about Varanasi "Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together." A tiny glimpse of what he was talking about can be gleaned from a boat ride on the river at dawn, one of the things that everybody should do here. Hindus believe in a cyclical life cycle and, as a result, birth and death dominate the rituals of daily life, especially in Varanasi. The city’s physical layout reinforces this belief. The entire city sits west of the Ganges, the side of the setting sun, but faces east, the side of the rising sun. Strong symbolism for the city’s association with death, because of its reputation as the Hindu cremation center, as well as rebirth and new life.

Plan for an early start of your private tour just before dawn, and let your guide take you to the river to meet your boat and boatman. At sunrise, travelling in the east-facing direction offers orange and honey-hued views that are quite magical. As you slowly journey past them, the stone steps known as ghats that line the Ganges, begin to fill up with people and you can observe an amazing variety of activities. Descending from the city down the riverbank, these ghats - there's almost a hundred of them - were built to allow people easy access to the river during both the wet and dry seasons. Every morning, hundreds of people splash around or take a holy dip by submerging themselves three times in a row to wash away their sins. But that's just one aspect of daily life unfolding in front of you. The Ganges takes care of laundry too, clothes and bedsheets being banged on the rocks and hung out to dry on make-shift washing lines. People wade into the water fully clothed, women in their bright saris, while saffron-clad holy men sit on rocks meditating or practicing yoga. Buffaloes, cows and dogs all make an appearance on the steps to drink, and take a dip, hawkers ply their trade, while boatmen are walking up and down to entice people for a ride on the water. Seen from your boat, it is an explosion of colors the likes of which you will have rarely seen. Many other rowing boats are soon traveling in either direction, breaking up the sun’s golden reflection in the water. Coupled with all the colorful sights and rituals, an early morning on the holy river feels truly magical and spiritual.

Varanasi may be home to popular and ancient Hindu temples, but it also has the distinction of being one of the most sacred destinations for Buddhists. The small site of Sarnath, about 20 Kms from Varanasi, is one of the four sacred Buddhist pilgrim centers and the one where Buddha delivered his first sermon, in what was a deer park, to his disciples. The other three sacred centers are Lumbini in Nepal where Buddha (then Prince Siddhartha) was born, Bodhgaya in Bihar where he attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi Tree and Khushinagar in Uttar Pradesh where he entered into Mahanirvana.

Interestingly, many visitors to Sarnath don’t realize it was also an important place for the believers of Lord Shiva. Sarnath is the short form for Saranganatha, which means Lord of Deer, another name of Lord Shiva. Most of Sarnath’s ruins are found in a, relatively, small and very well maintained area with the Dhamek Stupa - one of the most famous of all Buddhist stupas – dominating the site. It can be seen from, virtually, anywhere you walk in Sarnath. Originally built during the reign of King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty (around 249 BCE), it has undergone a series of expansions and additions. It’s solid, cylindrically-shaped edifice marks the spot where Lord Buddha preached the first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Today, Buddhist pilgrims from around the world visit Sarnath to circumambulate the holy Stupa, chanting the mantra or sitting on the grass in solemn prayer.

The museum, which is part of the site, boasts a great collection of archeological artifacts and your private guide can elaborate on the exhibits but then also give you time by yourself to browse at your own pace.

Day 6: Varanasi - Amritsar

The story of Varanasi and its full flavor should be experienced in different ways. A boat ride on the Ganges before dawn is a must, but so is a walking tour around the city. Varanasi is one of the holiest places in all of India and takes you on a genuine spiritual journey. Keep an open mind to appreciate the connection people have with the Ganges. Hindus believe that taking a dip in the holy river will wash away their sins, and that to die in Varanasi - and be cremated by the banks of the Ganges - will liberate them from the cycle of death and rebirth. As a result, the ghats, those stone steps leading down to the river bank against a fascinating background of majestic palaces, exquisite temples, and shrines, are an incredibly important part of all that is Varanasi, many named after a different deity and specific ceremonies. Manikarnika Ghat, for example, is famous for its daily cremations while Hanuman Ghat is devoted to Hanuman, the Monkey God. But there is also a bustling and intriguing life unfolding when you step into the narrow, sometimes puzzling, alleys with vegetable vendors, spice merchants and many other trades sharing tight, but colourful spaces that suddenly open up to an old marketplace, past the odd temple or shrine and, quite frequently, a curious cow or bull. The cultural and religious diversity on display is astonishing, including the Bengali Tola, settled by people from Bengal and a place where you can see washer men wash and lay out clothes to dry. Your private guide, usually, leaves the historic ritual bathing site called Dashaswamedh to the end, a perfect way to conclude this walking tour.

Day 7: Amritsar

The abode of Bliss and Blessings, the Golden Temple, is the holiest of the shrines of the Sikh religion. Guru Arjun Dev requested the great contemporary Muslim saint Mian Meer to lay the foundation stone of this shrine in January 1589. The building was completed in 1601 and the Holy Scripture of Sikhs Adi Granth was installed in 1604. Invaded by Afghan intruders in 1757,1762, and 1764,the temple was re-built in its present form in 1776.

Amritsar is strategically located 21 miles from the India-Pakistan border, along the road to Lahore in Pakistan. With your private guide and driver, head towards the Attari (Indian side) – Wagah (Pakistan side) border for the daily ceremonial lowering of the flags at sunset to observe the spectacle from the Indian side of the frontier. The border crossing served as the only official road link between the two countries until a second crossing was established in Kashmir in 1999. The nightly military drill between the Indian Border Security Force and Pakistan Rangers is a colorful ceremony of elaborate intimidating kicks and rapid dancelike maneuvers and symbolizes the simultaneous rivalry between the two countries as well as the brotherhood and cooperation between the two. At the end of the ceremony, return to your hotel in Amritsar by private vehicle. Along the way, visit Sarai Amanat Khan, a resting place set up by the legendary calligrapher of the Taj Mahal, Amanat Khan, for weary travelers. It is the only place aside from the Taj Mahal where it is possible to see Amanat Khan’s calligraphy work.

Day 10: Dharamshala

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is Dharamshala's most famous resident. Although it would be very fortunate to have an audience with the Dalai Lama or attend one of his teachings in Dharamshala, his travel schedule does not allow for this opportunity to arise very frequently. However, the 17th Karmapa, the second most important Tibetan spiritual leader in exile, grants an audience and blesses people every Wednesday at the Gyuto Tantric University. With your guide, arrive before 1 p.m. and join the audience at Gyuto Tantric University.

Dharamshala is a prominent center of Tibetan Buddhism, the home in exile of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Meet with a local Buddhist monk for a memorable interaction while performing a Kora walk, a Tibetan word that means "circumambulation" or "revolution". Join the monk for a Kora walk encircling the Dalai Lama's monastery in Mcleod Ganj, where many devotees can be found performing similar holy walks, bearing offerings and chanting prayers. The monk will join you on part of the Kora walk, and offer fascinating insights into Buddhism and Tibetan spirituality. Engage in a lively discussion on various aspects touching Tibetan Buddhism. The Kora walk is also referred to as Pradkshina in the local regional language.

Day 12: Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a small town in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. Scenically located where the Ganges River comes down from the Himalayas, Rishikesh catapulted to Western fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram (now closed), and the town is still known as the World Capital of Yoga. Rishikesh is the gateway and the starting point for pilgrim routes to the four dhams of Uttarakhand -- Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The whole place is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. There are many temples - some ancient, some new along the River Ganges. The river side is dotted by the ashrams of Sadhus and sages.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.

  • Donna F. — February 03, 2018 — Asia

Mark was able to put together the perfect tour! Our guide was very knowledge and we really appreciated her being so flexible with the holiday as we were there for Chinese New Year! She was able to take us to all the sights and part of the highlight was eating traditional Chinese food for New Year's.

  • Marjorie H. — October 01, 2018 — Asia

This tour was so well organized - everything went off perfectly. As two women traveling together in a country where the language barrier was a challenge, it gave us great peace of mind to know that we would be escorted wherever needed. We appreciated not being part of a group - our private tour guides were delightful and the entire trip was very special for my daughter and me.

  • Sandra S. — October 13, 2018 — Asia

The trip was very enjoyable. We gained new insights into China and the Chinese people. I wish we could have stayed longer. There is so much to see. My favorite sites were the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Soldiers, White Jade Buddah and the Shanghai night skyline. Cindy was most helpful in planning our trip. She's truly an asset to your company. Kensington Tours met all of our vacation needs.

  • Gina A. — January 09, 2019 — Asia

I usually don't write reviews but I have to tell you, this was the best vacation. Yuki, our Destination Expert, did an excellent job putting it all together and the guides were excellent. I will be using you guys for my next international vacation.

  • Larkin H. — December 22, 2018 — Asia

It was such a spectacular trip - one we will never forget.

  • Brian S. — November 02, 2018 — Asia

Gayan, our guide in Sri Lanka, was BEYOND amazing. I literally cannot do justice to how fantastic he was for my wife and I on our honeymoon. An amazing guide, a great companion, and an extremely good person.

  • Caryl G. — December 21, 2018 — Asia

It was a stellar experience in every way, but mostly due to the caliber of our tour guide. Tomo was exceptional in all areas - intelligence, expertise, personality and commitment to our comfort and needs. She truly went above and beyond and was a delightful companion, as well. It was actually emotional saying goodbye to each other!
