As the name suggests, an India Grand Journey requires time. Can it be done in 21 days? With artful planning, it is a reality. This is a journey that takes you around the country and covers many of its historical and spiritual centers, two of its exciting cosmopolitan cities – Delhi and Mumbai – and a delightful swing around the south around Kerala and over to Chennai on the Bay of Bengal.

Start your trip in Delhi, where tradition and modernity live happily side by side. The heart of Old Delhi is a 400-year old tangle of lanes with colorful bazaars, complemented by vibrant temples, the towering minaret of Qutab Minar, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort.

Be prepared for a genuine spiritual journey in Varanasi, one of India’s holiest cities. Hindus believe that taking a dip in the holy river the Ganges will wash their sins away, and that to die in Varanasi – and be cremated by the banks of the Ganges - will liberate them from the cycle of death and rebirth. Taking a boat ride, with your private guide, along the holy river at sunrise, exposes a fascinating variety of activities being played out along the river bank: people taking a dip fully-clothed, holy men sitting on a rock in deep meditation while hawkers are plying their trade. It's a riot of colors and a quintessential experience. The sleepy town of Khajuraho is uniquely attractive to visitors because of its Group of Monuments. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site today, ten percent of the site's exquisitely carved sculptures are of an erotic nature which has added to the site's popularity among travelers.

In Agra, the Taj Mahal, an exquisite example of Mughal architecture, has captivated travelers for centuries. Crafted entirely from white marble, construction of the Taj began the year after the Emperor Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died in childbirth in 1631. Enjoy the beautiful gardens, laid out in the classical Persian design and the elaborately embellished arches and other structures. Virtually every building in the historical center of Jaipur is painted a terracotta pink, but there’s a riot of colors everywhere else. Visit the City Palace, marvel at the fascinating precision of the giant sundial next and be in awe of Amber Fort, a breathtaking construction of red sandstone and marble. Take an evening walk with your private guide, sample some of the region's culinary delights from some of the city’s most popular street food vendors and observe local artisans in their workshops. Next, fly to Udaipur, the city of lakes. The majestic white City Palace offers a spectacular view over Lake Pichola and you can enjoy a boat ride with your private guide. At Eklingji, about twelve miles north of Udaipur you can stroll around a vast maze of 108 temples, while the collection of crystals at the Fateh Prakash Palace might just take your breath away.

India's most populous city, Mumbai, is a vibrant swirl at any time. Visit its most famous landmark – the Gateway of India - located at the southern tip of the city and overlooking the splendid Arabian Sea, then savor street food at the many street shops that line Chowpatty Beach. The almost 2-mile long boulevard has been a Bollywood favorite for decades. Another highlight is a cruise through Mumbai Harbor, taking you to the rock-cut cave temples on Elephanta Island. This temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, covers an area of 60,000 square feet and contains magnificent reliefs, sculptures, and a temple to the Hindu god Shiva.

From Mumbai fly to Cochin, known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea from the 14th century onwards. Your private guide is going to take you to places that show the city’s rich multi-cultural heritage with its Portuguese, Dutch, Jewish and British influences. No visit to Cochin is complete without attending a Kathakali dance performance at Greenix Village. You can watch the actors apply their make-up, a very detailed process, and well worth attending before the actual start of the show. The next two stops, Alleppey and Thekaddy, embrace wildlife, spices and the backwaters of Kerala, including privately-guided visits to a bird sanctuary, a spice garden and an overnight on a comfortable and elegant houseboat. The tranquility of the water, the enchanting landscapes and the melodies of the evening birds turn this into an incredibly delightful part of the trip.

The number of temples in India is presumed to be around six million and the Meenakshi Amman Temple Madurai is thought to represent the peak of South Indian temple architecture. Because of its staggering array of gods, goddesses, and demons encrusted on many tall gatehouse towers, it is known as the Athens of the East and its history can be traced back 2,500 years.

Conclude this incredible journey around India in Chennai, the country’s fourth-largest city. The town’s famous temple is Kapleeshwarar, but just half a mile down the road is a Portuguese church, that was built over the tomb of the Apostle St. Thomas. Only two other places in the world share this notoriety; St. Peter in the Vatican and St. James in Compostela, Spain. The city also boasts the world’s second largest beach, stretching some 8 miles, with a 150-feet tall lighthouse offering a superb view over the city and the bay.

Day 2: Delhi

The contrasts between Old and New Delhi are striking – Old Delhi boasts spectacular UNESCO World Heritage monuments and holy sites, whereas New Delhi was designed in a typically British colonial style, with manicured tree-lined avenues and colonial bungalows. Meet with your private guide and driver to spend the day exploring the contrasts between the two sides of the city, and an overall orientation of the city’s finest sites. Start with the Laxminarayan Temple, a modern Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, and the first large-scale Hindu Temple built in Delhi. Drive past the impressive India Gate, a famous 137-foot-high War Memorial Arch that is reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort, the captivating historic fort that served as the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years. It was constructed as the palace for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s new capital, Shahjahanabad when he moved his capital from Agra to bring prestige to his reign. The sprawling fort is 1.5 miles long and ranges in height from 60 to 110 feet. The architecture bears a resemblance to Agra Fort. Next, visit Qutab Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world at 239 feet in height. The minaret is surrounded by many buildings that are fine examples of Indian artwork dating back to 1193 and forms the Qutab complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. End the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Humayun’s Tomb, a complex of Mughal-style buildings dating to the Slave Dynasty of 1268-1287 AD. The complex is the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India, and the mausoleum is built in a similar style as the Taj Mahal in Agra. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

The Aarti Ceremony is a devotional Hindu ritual performed at dusk on the banks of the Ganges, using fire as an offering to, the affectionately referenced, Maa Ganga, goddess of the holiest river in India. Varanasi, also known as Benares and Kashi (City of Life), is one of the three holy cities - Rishikesh and Haridwar are the other two - where this event happens every day. Usually, a small oil lamp made of clay adorned with a candle and flowers is lit and floated down the river. It's a beautiful sight that takes place every sunset at the holy Dasaswamedh Ghat. Young Hindu priests, all draped in saffron-colored robes, perform the highly choreographed ritual on an elevated stage facing the river. Clouds of incense fill the air, while priests chant and wave incense sticks in elaborate patterns or circle large flaming lamps that create a magnificent spectacle of colors against the darkened sky.

The ritual lasts a little less than an hour, after which your private guide takes you to a waiting boat and boatman to experience Varanasi’s night views as observed from the river. The most important and, a potentially unsettling one, is to see the burning funeral pyres you encounter on the way. You can witness cremations as your boat floats gently past, revealing a ritual that is memorable in its rawness, simplicity, and completeness. It is helpful to hear your guide explain the Hindu believe that if a deceased’s ashes are laid to rest in the Ganges at Varanasi, it allows their soul to be transported to heaven and thus escape the cycle of rebirth. A tour with an intriguing close-up view of a quintessential Varanasi experience.

Day 4: Varanasi

Mark Twain once said this about Varanasi "Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together." A tiny glimpse of what he was talking about can be gleaned from a boat ride on the river at dawn, one of the things that everybody should do here. Hindus believe in a cyclical life cycle and, as a result, birth and death dominate the rituals of daily life, especially in Varanasi. The city’s physical layout reinforces this belief. The entire city sits west of the Ganges, the side of the setting sun, but faces east, the side of the rising sun. Strong symbolism for the city’s association with death, because of its reputation as the Hindu cremation center, as well as rebirth and new life.

Plan for an early start of your private tour just before dawn, and let your guide take you to the river to meet your boat and boatman. At sunrise, travelling in the east-facing direction offers orange and honey-hued views that are quite magical. As you slowly journey past them, the stone steps known as ghats that line the Ganges, begin to fill up with people and you can observe an amazing variety of activities. Descending from the city down the riverbank, these ghats - there's almost a hundred of them - were built to allow people easy access to the river during both the wet and dry seasons. Every morning, hundreds of people splash around or take a holy dip by submerging themselves three times in a row to wash away their sins. But that's just one aspect of daily life unfolding in front of you. The Ganges takes care of laundry too, clothes and bedsheets being banged on the rocks and hung out to dry on make-shift washing lines. People wade into the water fully clothed, women in their bright saris, while saffron-clad holy men sit on rocks meditating or practicing yoga. Buffaloes, cows and dogs all make an appearance on the steps to drink, and take a dip, hawkers ply their trade, while boatmen are walking up and down to entice people for a ride on the water. Seen from your boat, it is an explosion of colours the likes of which you will have rarely seen. Many other rowing boats are soon traveling in either direction, breaking up the sun’s golden reflection in the water. Coupled with all the colourful sights and rituals, an early morning on the holy river feels truly magical and spiritual.

Varanasi may be home to popular and ancient Hindu temples, but it also has the distinction of being one of the most sacred destinations for Buddhists. The small site of Sarnath, about 20 Kms from Varanasi, is one of the four sacred Buddhist pilgrim centers and the one where Buddha delivered his first sermon, in what was a deer park, to his disciples. The other three sacred centers are Lumbini in Nepal where Buddha (then Prince Siddhartha) was born, Bodhgaya in Bihar where he attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi Tree and Khushinagar in Uttar Pradesh where he entered into Mahanirvana.

Interestingly, many visitors to Sarnath don’t realize it was also an important place for the believers of Lord Shiva. Sarnath is the short form for Saranganatha, which means Lord of Deer, another name of Lord Shiva. Most of Sarnath’s ruins are found in a, relatively, small and very well maintained area with the Dhamek Stupa - one of the most famous of all Buddhist stupas – dominating the site. It can be seen from, virtually, anywhere you walk in Sarnath. Originally built during the reign of King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty (around 249 BCE), it has undergone a series of expansions and additions. It’s solid, cylindrically-shaped edifice marks the spot where Lord Buddha preached the first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Today, Buddhist pilgrims from around the world visit Sarnath to circumambulate the holy Stupa, chanting the mantra or sitting on the grass in solemn prayer.

The museum, which is part of the site, boasts a great collection of archeological artifacts and your private guide can elaborate on the exhibits but then also give you time by yourself to browse at your own pace.

A stunning monument to love, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Taj Mahal has captivated the hearts and minds of travelers for centuries. Meet with a local guide in Fatehpur Sikri to explore the ruins. Day 9: Jaipur

Meet your private guide and driver at your hotel, and spend the day exploring some of Jaipur’s iconic monuments. Begin the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent hilltop Amber Fort, also known as the Amer Fort. Originally established in 1592, Maharaja Man Singh I created the imposing citadel on the remains of an earlier 11th-century Jaigarh Fort, and it remained under the control of Kachhawaha rulers until they moved their capital to nearby Jaipur in 1727.

From here, continue to the City Palace, a breathtaking 18th-century royal residence to the rulers of Jaipur. Wander through the sprawling complex and visit areas that have been converted to a museum illustrating the harmony of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Part of the palace, Chandra Mahal, is the home of the current Maharaja and is off-limits.

After the palace, continue to the adjacent Observatory of Jaipur, known as Jantar Mantar. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the world’s largest sundial. The massive astronomical instruments were built from local stone and marble and is a monument to 18th-century architectural innovations during the Mughal period. End with a visit to the red and pink sandstone Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of the Winds. Jaipur’s iconic monument sits adjacent to the opulent City Palace and is adorned in an ornate pale pink façade with a tiered baroque-like build.  The original design was intended to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and public festivals in the streets below without being seen, in observance of the strict rules of “purdah”, which forbade them from appearing in public without face coverings. The 953 small windows called “jharokhas” are decorated with intricate latticework and offer spectacular views of the city. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

The creative energy and ingenuity of Jaipur have long been a drawing point of the city, a lasting legacy of skilled craftspeople and artisans. From the founding of the city in 1727, the royal families and nobles of Jaipur have patronized the craft capital of India, and through their sphere of influence, many valuable and highly prized items can still be found. Using skills passed down through generations, artisans and master craftsmen can be seen in the areas of Ghat Darwaza and Vishveshwar ji. Starting in front of the iconic Palace of the Winds, set out on foot with your private guide and spend a colorful evening walking through the city’s bazaars, mingling and chatting with store vendors and locals alike, and sampling some of the region’s notable culinary favorites. Taste pakoras, aloo tiki, samosas and ladoo from a selection of the city’s most popular street food vendors that have been carefully vetted for quality and hygiene standards. Stroll along and poke your head into local artisans’ workshops to observe the painstakingly careful craftsmanship of jewelers and silversmiths, gold painters and tie-dying experts. At the end the 2.5-hour walk through the bazaars, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Accommodation: Taj Lake Palace (5*)

The Taj Lake Palace, located in the middle of Lake Pichola is a dream of white marble and mosaic glistening in the moonlight, very reminiscent of the Taj Mahal. Conceived in romance, the palace was built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, 62nd successor to the royal dynasty of Mewar – believed to be descendants of the Sun God. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Aravalli Mountains on one side of the lake, and lofty palaces on the other, the Taj Lake Palace spreads across a four-acre island – an almost surreal vision in marble. From casual, all-day dining to formal, fine dining, guests can look forward to a wide array of delectable culinary delights and refreshing beverages. I loved working with Kenny and all the people at Kensington Tours. I loved how easily everything flowed during our journey. Your people were mostly wonderful with a few who simply showed up. We had a few hotel rooms that were less than perfect but in the case of Varanasi I mentioned my displeasure and the room was immediately changed. Many of the hotels were as luxurious as promised and the service was impeccable. We truly loved our trip and would happily use your services again and recommend them to our friends.

Guides and especially drivers were very good, indeed.

Each of my guides was absolutely wonderful, making a whirlwind tour feel well-paced and meaningful as well as providing interesting historical/cultural insights and offering excellent shopping and restaurant recommendations. In particular, Sanjil made sure I got all of the best photo angles of the Taj Mahal. Vivek was an amazing story-teller who went above and beyond to make Udaipur come alive, and Indrajeet was an excellent teacher of India's many religions and cultural traditions. The Oberoi hotels were unbelievable; I have never stayed in more luxurious accommodations or experienced more attentive service! This tour was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
