India's national parks are well-worth your consideration for a tiger safari, not because you might have already traveled to Africa, but because they offer a very different flavor of wildlife tracking in a country that is also distinctly different from a cultural point of view. This trip takes you to two national parks, Pench and Khana. The latter was the setting for Kipling's classic novel 'The Jungle Book' and although it can never be guaranteed, there is always a chance that you encounter a 'relative' of Shere Khan.

Arrive for your journey following Kipling’s footsteps in Mumbai, India's most populous city and the financial capital of the world’s largest democracy. Visit its most famous landmark, Gateway of India, at the southern tip of the city and overlooking the splendid Arabian Sea, then savor street food at the many street shops that line Chowpatty Beach. The city is a vibrant swirl at any time and the almost 2 mile-long boulevard here has been a Bollywood favorite for decades.

From Mumbai, a 90-minute flight takes you to Nagpur, followed by a 3-hour private transfer to Khana National Park. Khana’s vast grasslands, supporting large herds of deer, have earned it the nickname "the N'Gorongoro of India". Apart from deer, it boasts an incredibly rich wildlife, including Sambar, Chital and Indian Muntjac, Grey Langur, Golden Jackal, Bengal Fox, Wild Boar - and of course, Tiger. Herds of gigantic gaur, the largest wild cattle in the world can be spotted in good numbers. Less frequently, you might see the rather more elusive Leopard, Dhole (Indian Wild Dog), Sloth Bear, Striped Hyena, Indian Crested Porcupine, Indian Pangolin and the Four-horned Antelope. The animals around here are, not surprisingly, most active early and late in the day, so plan to make daily excursions by jeep into the park in the early mornings and evenings, accompanied by well-trained naturalist guides. Be prepared that mornings are misty cool and evenings usually a little nippy.

The second part of this safari takes you to Pench, approximately five hours away by a private transfer. Nestled in the lower southern reaches of the Satpura Hills, it is named after the river flowing through the national park. Pench is a mixed deciduous forest, totaling 470 square miles. Its jungle is teeming with spotted deer, Blue bull, Sambar and large herds of Gaur among a host of other deer and antelopes like the elusive Muntjac and the four-horned antelope respectively. The world's largest cat, the tiger (weighing 220 kg for an average male), as well as the world’s smallest cat the Rusty-spotted cat (weighing under 1.5 kg), can both be found here. The numerous large bodies of water, grasslands, and forests provide a varied avian habitat, making it a bird haven with over 340 species recorded.

Day 5: Kanha

Kanha is one of India’s largest National Parks, spread over a staggering 750 square miles. Misty cool mornings and chilly evenings are a trademark of the region. The region’s unique topography is characterized by a horseshoe-shaped valley, and the whole park area is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal. Home to numerous endangered species, Kanha’s most famous resident is the Bengal tiger in a home ideal for both predator and prey. Set out on a morning jeep safari through the park, and keep your eyes open for the tremendous variety of wildlife living in the park, including bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, hyena, and leopards.

Day 6: Kanha

Head out into the wilderness of Kanha National Park for a wildlife safari by jeep. Although the park is famous for its tiger viewing opportunities, the park is also home to a tremendous amount of biodiversity. The park was setting for Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, “The Jungle Book”. The park was initially established in 1955 to protect the endangered ‘hardground’ swamp deer Barasingha, also the park’s mascot.  This charismatic deer gets its name from the multiple tines on its antlers, usually 12 or ‘Barah’ in Hindi. Other rarer park residents include the rhesus, the dhole (Indian wild dog), sloth bear, striped hyena, Indian crested porcupine, and Indian pangolin.

Day 8: Pench National Park

Head back into the fertile forests of Pench National Park for an additional day of animal tracking by jeep. The reserve boasts India’s highest density of herbivores in India. Crisscrossed by several seasonal streams and nallahs, the Pench Reservoir at the center of the park is the only major water source during the pinch period. The Indian Scops Owl and the Spotted Owlet are some of the well-camouflaged birds that sometimes appear on a safari, and the well-trained eye of a naturalist will facilitate finding them. In recent years, the park has seen a boost in its tiger population numbers, giving visitors an excellent opportunity for tiger spotting.

Day 9: Pench National Park

Nestled in the lower southern reaches of the Satpura Hills, Pench National Park draws its name from the seasonal Pench River that flows through its territory, drying up every April. The river runs from the north to the south of the park, dividing the park into almost equal western and eastern halves. The vast wilderness helped inspire Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, “The Jungle Book”. Head out on a wildlife safari by jeep into the typical central Indian teak jungle, keeping a lookout for tigers amidst the undulating topography. Pench National Park’s unique vegetation ranges from tropical deciduous forest with a number of streams and watering holes – a perfect place to spot wildlife. Mingled with the tropical dry deciduous teak forests, the park’s open habitat not only lends itself well to wildlife viewing, but also offers striking views of the area’s sheer beauty. Leopards, wild dog, gaur, sambar, and chital also inhabit the forests.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

  • Ann L — June 05, 2019 — Asia

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

  • Sandra S — February 09, 2019 — Asia

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.

  • Donna F. — February 03, 2018 — Asia

Mark was able to put together the perfect tour! Our guide was very knowledge and we really appreciated her being so flexible with the holiday as we were there for Chinese New Year! She was able to take us to all the sights and part of the highlight was eating traditional Chinese food for New Year's.

  • Marjorie H. — October 01, 2018 — Asia

This tour was so well organized - everything went off perfectly. As two women traveling together in a country where the language barrier was a challenge, it gave us great peace of mind to know that we would be escorted wherever needed. We appreciated not being part of a group - our private tour guides were delightful and the entire trip was very special for my daughter and me.

  • Sandra S. — October 13, 2018 — Asia

The trip was very enjoyable. We gained new insights into China and the Chinese people. I wish we could have stayed longer. There is so much to see. My favorite sites were the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Soldiers, White Jade Buddah and the Shanghai night skyline. Cindy was most helpful in planning our trip. She's truly an asset to your company. Kensington Tours met all of our vacation needs.

  • Gina A. — January 09, 2019 — Asia

I usually don't write reviews but I have to tell you, this was the best vacation. Yuki, our Destination Expert, did an excellent job putting it all together and the guides were excellent. I will be using you guys for my next international vacation.
