Geographically, Tamil Nadu and Kerala — the star states of India’s deep south — are hundreds of miles removed from the non-stop ballyhoo of Delhi. Spiritually, that distance may as well be measured in light years. A nexus of both trade and Hindu tradition for centuries, Tamil Nadu is a bustling region on the Bay of Bengal famed for its historic temples, royal palaces, and steadfast traditions. Its neighbor couldn’t be more different; a pastoral playground dotted with lagoons and draped in lush greenery, Kerala is as calm as the rest of India is clamorous. Join us on this engaging Explorers Club trip and discover South India’s distinct personalities.

Set out with a private guide to explore the city of Chennai (formerly Madras), watching daily rituals and learn about the finer points of Dravidian architecture at Kapaleeswarar Temple, before heading to the ancient seaport of Mahabalipuram to see the rathas and cave temples of this UNESCO-protected monument complex, notably “The Ganges,” a 90-foot-long relief sculpture of India’s sacred river. Before leaving Chennai, stop in at the Kalakshetra Foundation, a center dedicated to the preservation of Indian arts and culture, particularly Bharatanatyam dance. Later in Thanjavur, meet the silk weavers of Kumbakonam and learn the fine art of handloom weaving from an expert before taking in a Bharatanatyam dance performance and home-style vegetarian dinner. The next morning, discover Brihadeeswara Temple — one of the largest of its kind in India — and other sites on a private tour of this bustling hub of Tamil culture. In Madurai, check out the magnificent Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and walk its busy bazaars before getting an up-close view of the legendary Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the boldest and brightly colored shrines in the region. ... Last stop: Cochin, gateway to magical Kerala. A short flight from Madurai leaves you with an afternoon on your own to discover the unique cultures — Dutch, Portuguese, English, and even Chinese — that have influenced this exotic port city for centuries. Your final full day begins with a sunrise trip to the beach to watch the fishermen bring in the morning’s haul, followed by breakfast with a local family and a bicycle (or tuk-tuk) tour of the city, before boarding a traditional kettuvallam houseboat in Alleppey for a serene day cruise through the backwaters and lunch on board.

A dazzling mix of ancient tradition, architectural splendor, and natural delights, South India is unlike any other India you’ve met before. Come and get introduced to your next favorite place.

The ITC Grand Chola is a fascinating throwback to a vibrant period in Indian history and epitomizes timeless beauty and luxury. The property’s 522 rooms, along with 78 luxuriously appointed service apartments, embody the highest standards in Indian hospitality. Day 2: Chennai

Today, see Chennai’s historical and architectural gems on this half-day private sightseeing tour. Drive to Kapaleeshwar Temple, built in the 7th century and dedicated to the goddess Shiva. Learn about its Dravidian architecture, evident by its gopuram, an ornate monumental tower. Later, visit Santhome Cathedral, where St. Thomas the Apostle of Jesus Christ lived and preached Christianity. Drive along Marina Beach believed to be the second longest beach in the World and Presidency College, a fine example of mid-19th century Indo-Saracenic architecture. On to Fort St. George, the oldest English fortress in India, founded in 1644, where you learn how it now serves as the headquarters for the legislative assembly of the state of Tamil Nadu. Inside, tour St Mary's Church, the first Anglican Church in Asia. From there, head to the Indo-Saracenic-style Government Museum (also called the Madras Museum), which is the second-oldest museum in India.

This afternoon, enjoy a city tour of Mamallapuram with a private guide, a truly extraordinary experience. One of the stops is at the open-air museum of Tamil art, created by students under the patronage of the Pallava rulers. Strewn along the coast are some outstanding examples of 7th century sculptures. The landmark of this marvelous collection is the Shore Temple, a World Heritage monument, and the only surviving one from the complex, the other’s having been claimed by the sea. When the tour ends, you will be taken back to Chennai and dropped off at your hotel.

Day 3: Chennai - Tiruchirappalli - Thanjavur

The word “kalakshetra” means “holy place of the arts.” Founded in 1936, Kalakshetra is Tamil Nadu’s leading academy of the arts, with a focus on the traditional dances and music styles of the state. The Kalakshetra Dance Academy, a renowned Chennai arts center teaches Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest classical dance styles. With an expert, learn about this ancient dance and its accompanying carnatic (classical music of South India) vocals and music, played on instruments such as cymbals, drums, and flutes and you can watch student dancers and musicians learning some of the traditional movements.

A transfer with private vehicle, driver, and English-speaking assistant between Chennai and the airport is provided.

Enjoy your flight from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour.

Transfer from Tiruchirappalli to Thanjavur (formally Tanjore) with your private vehicle and professional driver. The duration is approximately 1.5 hours.

Accommodation: Svatma (4*)

Svatma is a hotel unlike many. It is the epitome of Tamil culture and art that has evolved into a travel destination of mystique and allure. There are no standard rooms in this property, each is unique, built as an elite family residence over a hundred years ago and lovingly restored. Think of it as a sort of romantic notion by contemporary artists, flirting with curated antiques and experimenting with ancient art forms. What’s been created here is almost an affair of the mind, moving between Carnatic Music and Chola Bronzes while witnessing traditional Bharatanayam in an amphitheater, occasionally pervaded by the aroma of traditional filter coffee. At Svatma, the residency becomes a journey in itself, a voyage of discovery, an immersion in the arts.

Day 4: Thanjavur

Start on a full day exploration of Kumbakonam and visit the bronze sculpture artisans. These talented sculptors create superb replicas of traditional South Indian bronzes through the lost-wax method. The design and construction of these artworks follows the strict aesthetic guidelines outlined in the Shilpa Shastra, an ancient treatise on Indian art. Many of the originals upon which they are based can be seen in the Rajaraja Museum in Thanjavur. You will then visit the silk weavers of Kumbakonam, who create brightly colored saris and pattu pavadai (children’s dresses), featuring floral and animal motifs. Enjoy a unique session with these expert handloom weavers to understand the step by step procedure of weaving.

This evening, watch a scintillating Bharatanatyam dance performance. The performance brings to life mythological characters of divine origin which blends music, rhythm, poetry and expressions.

Tonight enjoy a culinary experience of a pure home-style Tamil vegetarian meal. Ideal for health conscious foodies wanting to explore the flavors of the region, the ingredients are organic and carefully prepared by trained specialist chefs.

Day 5: Thanjavur - Madurai

Today with your private English-speaking guide, visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple, also called the Big Temple, and dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the more popular temples in Southern India, the Brahadeeswarar Temple is the Chola dynasty's finest contribution to Dravidian temple architecture. What makes the construction so unique is the diversion from the usual temple building norms of having a tall gopuram and smaller vimanams (the towers over the sanctum).

Transfer from Thanjavur (formally Tanjore) to Madurai with your private vehicle and professional driver. The duration is approximately 4 hours.

This evening, visit Madurai’s showpiece, the 17th-century Meenakshi Amman Temple, overlooking the River Vaigai. Marvel at the sprawling temple, dedicated to Parvati and Shiva, and view its spectacular gateway towers (gopurams), covered in brightly painted carvings of Hindu gods. During your visit, experience a night ceremony at the temple. Each night the image of Shiva, is carried from his shrine to join his consort Parvati at hers, in another part of the temple.

Accommodation: Heritage Madurai (4.5*)

Heritage Madurai rings with historic charm that echoes in every hallway and every room. Lounge by the Olympic-sized temple tank pool, or relax in a plunge pool in your own private villa. Dine under a 200 year old banyan tree, serenaded by bird calls, while enjoying a delightful meal prepared by your own personal chef, specifically prepared to please your particular taste buds. Take a leisurely ‘historic’ walk through the corridors where, it seems, every stone has a story to tell.

Day 6: Madurai

Today with your private English-speaking guide, visit the 17th century Thirumalai Nayak Palace and the immense Theppakulam water tank. The Palace, which incorporates Islamic influences, was partially restored in the 19th century by Lord Napier, then governor of Madras. The square-shaped tank features animal and bird shaped balustrades leading down to the water.

This afternoon, with your private English-speaking guide, walk through Madurai’s vibrant bazaars, where you can admire crafts made specifically for the region’s Hindu temples and religious festivals. In Pudhu Mandapam, you can often find Muthangi, which are garments made for temple deities. While they were historically decorated with zari, pearls and precious stones, glass beads are typically used today. You can also find appliquéd textiles used to decorate temple chariots and doorways. This will be followed by a visit to the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple, one of the most vibrant living temples in South India. This complex features 12 gigantic gopuras, or towers, covered with brightly-colored deities, animals and monsters. The Thousand-Pillared Hall, now a small museum, contains 985 highly-decorated pillars; a set of pillars just outside of the hall produce the seven notes of Carnatic music when struck.

Enjoy your flight from Madurai to Cochin with a stop in Chennai today. The flight duration is approximately 3 hours.

This evening, enjoy a Kathakali dance performance. Dating back to the 17th century, it originated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The word Kathakali literally means "Story-Play". It is known for its large, elaborate makeup and costumes. Usually performed only by men, the actors rely heavily on hand gestures to convey their story.

Accommodation: Vivanta by Taj - Malabar (5*)

Situated on Willingdon Island with a magnificent view of Cochin harbor, the Taj Malabar combines old-world elegance with modern day convenience. In its heritage wing, built in 1935, graceful Victorian interiors aptly reflect the inherent beauty of Cochin. Its tower wing houses newly renovated guestroom suites, each a delicate mix of classic and contemporary styles. Dine at the onsite restaurant that explores the nuances of the finest Indian and international cuisine, serving traditional and contemporary favorites. After a tiring day, unwind at the bar with a cocktail. Drop in at the Jiva Spa where the 4000-year-old art of Ayurveda is faithfully followed through a range of treatments designed to soothe the mind, body, and soul.

Day 8: Cochin - Alleppey

Begin your day with an early morning excursion with your professional driver and English-speaking guide to a local beach. Time your arrival as the local fishing boats pull in with their catch of the day. There is an auction on the beach with retailers and exporters bidding for the best catch. Afterwards, visit a local family for a ‘home hospitality’ experience and a simple breakfast. Later, spend a somnolent morning exploring the surrounding village on a bicycle with your private guide. The generosity of the villagers and the smiles and laughter that fill the village streets exemplify a richness of their spirit. If you are less adventurous and not keen on cycling, alternate arrangements can be made by local ‘Tuk Tuk’.

Meet your driver for a private transfer to Alappuzha, traditionally known as Allepey. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours.

At Alleppey, board a Kettuvallam - a traditional houseboat - and enjoy cruising through the fabled backwaters, the undisputed highlight of the region. You’ll pass the backwaters, as well as tiny, colorful towns and fishing villages. The Kettuvallam or ‘boat with knots’ got its name because the entire boat was held together with coir knots only; not even a single nail is used during the construction.  The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine.

Lunch will be served on board the houseboat, featuring a fresh catch of the day. The backwaters are a network of canals, lakes, lagoons and estuaries stretching over almost 1000 square miles. Here, palm-fringed narrow canals wind through a vast expanse of paddy fields. As you float along, enjoy the picturesque hamlets that line the banks, migratory birds in abundance, water lilies and coconut groves.

Meet your professional driver for a private transfer to Cochin. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours.

  • Bonnie Carroll — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

The trip was FABULOUS! We are now loyal Kensington converts - you took care of everything, and each day unfolded with new surprises and adventures! They were made aware (by Kensington??) that it was our shared birthday trip (my 60th!) and so each Oberoi really outdid themselves in doing special birthday celebrations! Wow, amazing! Just overwhelming!

  • Pamela L — August 22, 2017 — India & Area

Everything was great, when we wanted to change something they were very good at doing so. I was more than satisfied. Thanks for a wonderful trip.

  • Bruce Rubin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

I loved working with Kenny and all the people at Kensington Tours. I loved how easily everything flowed during our journey. Your people were mostly wonderful with a few who simply showed up. We had a few hotel rooms that were less than perfect but in the case of Varanasi I mentioned my displeasure and the room was immediately changed. Many of the hotels were as luxurious as promised and the service was impeccable. We truly loved our trip and would happily use your services again and recommend them to our friends.

  • Renee Martin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

Really great experience! The quality and the individuality of how our tour was designed was perfect! Would definitely like to do another tour with Kensington!

  • Richard B. — July 15, 2016 — India & Area

Guides and especially drivers were very good, indeed.

  • Alicia H. — June 30, 2016 — India & Area

Each of my guides was absolutely wonderful, making a whirlwind tour feel well-paced and meaningful as well as providing interesting historical/cultural insights and offering excellent shopping and restaurant recommendations. In particular, Sanjil made sure I got all of the best photo angles of the Taj Mahal. Vivek was an amazing story-teller who went above and beyond to make Udaipur come alive, and Indrajeet was an excellent teacher of India's many religions and cultural traditions. The Oberoi hotels were unbelievable; I have never stayed in more luxurious accommodations or experienced more attentive service! This tour was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

  • William C. — May 19, 2016 — India & Area

Mahipal, our driver for 10 days, was absolutely excellent. My wife has had 3 previous neck surgeries, and cannot ride in a bumpy vehicle. Mahipal was careful to make our travel as smooth as humanly possible. Thank you! Sunita Singh was excellent in arranging everything we needed, as well as our driver.

  • Sherri W. — May 18, 2016 — India & Area

The choice of hotels and the guides selected for each city were very knowledgeable. We especially liked Rotan in Jodhpur, Gowinda in Jaipur, Iqbal in Agra and Mr Satya Gupta in Deli. They were all very patient, humorous, and happened to be willing photographers. They even made restaurant suggestions for local places outside the hotel. Great versatility. Our driver, Mr. Ronnert Singh, navigated those tough Indian roads safely and flawlessly. We've taken a few tours but quite frankly Kensington was one of the best.

  • James H. — May 18, 2016 — India & Area

The pacing was well thought out. It's about as easy as you will ever do, i think, touring for a month in India. The Oberoi Hotels were uniformly excellent.

  • Diana D. — May 12, 2016 — India & Area

Just arrived back from a spectacular 13-day visit to Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. Sunita Singh of Kensington put together a perfect itinerary to give us a taste of Indian sights, sounds, people and culture and the hotel bookings exceeded our expectations. Everywhere we went we were met by the local Kensington representatives, who more than handled any request we came up with. We felt well cared for throughout the trip. The local guides selected by the local Kensington representatives were knowledgeable about their home city and they were very flexible and accommodating in seeking to make the trip special. Since we were driven in a private van from Udaipur to Jodhpur to Jaipur to Agra and back to Delhi, we could not have been in better hands. Our driver was spectacular. The trip was a success and we could not be happier. Thank you Kensington for a very special trip.
