A delightful journey into the Himalayas, combining the mysteries and breathtaking vistas of Bhutan with the lesser known but equally stunning scenery of India’s state of Sikkim. The latter is the second-smallest state in India, wedged between Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and West Bengal. It offers an astounding range of pristine natural beauty, dazzling waterfalls, and virgin forests, but also colorful Buddhist monasteries and quaint villages. The third-highest peak in the world (Kanchenjunga) lies in Sikkim.

Start your trip in Delhi and continue to fly to Gangtok, Sikkim’s beautiful capital, also known as "Land of Monasteries". Visit the Enchey Monastery and the intriguing Namgyal Institute of Tibetology with its rare collection of Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscripts. Your next stop is Darjeeling, one of the most famous cities in India, and best-known around the world for growing tea. It is lovely and peaceful, and the air is wonderfully fresh. Your private guide will join you for a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a classic steam-powered locomotive train that runs on a narrow-gauge track, nicknamed the Toy Train. Yes, it's a bit touristy, but the journey through the rolling hills and the view of the Himalayas is a delightful adventure. Darjeeling’s natural grandeur is, perhaps, savored best from Tiger Hill. Join your private guide before the break of dawn to see the sun rise over the Himalayas, a view that slowly reveals the snow-capped mountains of Everest, Kanchenjunga and other peaks emerging with the rising sun.

It is now possible to drive into Bhutan, and Phuentsholing is the border point from where to enter the country by road. As Bhutan's second largest city, it shares its border with the Indian town of Jaigaon, turning both places into brisk centers for cross-border trading. Your one overnight in town allows you to see a place with modern buildings quite unlike elsewhere in Bhutan.

Once you reach Thimpu you know "you have arrived". Colorful paintings with rich and intricate detail on the walls make Bhutan’s capital, one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Locals have a wonderfully charming traditional outlook, but there is also a cosmopolitan flair in the air. A lovely mix. Accompany your private guide to see Thimpu’s most iconic landmark: the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the largest Buddha statue in the world, measuring 177 feet and visit the Changangkha Lhakhang. This is the oldest temple in Thimpu, built in the 12th century, hovering over a ridge near Motihang. By the way, you can purchase some of the world’s most beautiful postage stamps, all collector's items, at face value from the general post office.

On the drive to Punakha, up the Dochula Pass (10,130ft) we stop briefly to take in the view and admire the chortens (hemispherical religious structures also known as stupas), Mani walls, and prayer flags which decorate the highest point on the road. Punakha is the most fertile valley in the country, offering a great opportunity to go for a hike up through rice fields along the banks of the Mo Chu river, followed by a drive towards Khurutang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and other winter homes of the royal family.

Your last stop in Bhutan is Paro, and an excursion to the spectacular Taktsang monastery. The building literally clings to the edge of a sheer rock that plunges 3,000 feet into the valley below. Almost everything about Paro is spiritual. In many places, the only sound you will hear is the wind and the faint chime of the prayer bells.

Day 5: Darjeeling

Early morning after a cup of tea, you will visit Tiger Hill before the break of dawn, to see the sun rise over Mount Everest, the highest mountain peak in the world. Darjeeling owes its grandeur to its natural beauty, its clean fresh mountain air and above all, the smiling resilient people for whom it is a home. Known for its natural splendour, Darjeeling’s best gift to its visitors is the dawn of a new day. The mountains awaken first with a tentative peeking of the sun. A steep ride, five kilometers from Ghoom, or an invigorating walk up a steep incline, leads sun worshippers to Tiger Hill. The air is chilly with darkness and damp. To the east, a dull orange sun emerged painting the sky with brilliant strokes of magenta, gold, orange and fuchsia. The snow-capped Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other peaks slowly emerge from slumber to start a new day.

After breakfast, your guide will take you to the Darjeeling Railway station, where you will board a train heading up to Ghoom. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, nicknamed the "Toy Train", is a 2 feet (61 centimeter) narrow-gauge railway from Siliguri to Darjeeling in West Bengal, run by the Indian Railways. Since 1999 the train has been a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. Only two railways claim this status, the Semmering Railway in Austria being the second one. The trip on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has changed little since that time (1920’s), and continues to delight travelers and rail enthusiasts. The passion of some people is so great that the train has its own preservation and support group, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society. Passing through the Darjeeling roads and market area, you will reach the Ghoom railway station in about 45 minutes. Ghoom is situated at 7410 Feet above sea level and it is the second highest railway station to be reached by a steam engine. Your vehicle will pick you up from the Ghoom railway station.

Day 10: Thimphu - Punakha

If skies are clear, the high Himalayan peaks towards the northeast will be revealed in all of their glory. On a clear day, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongaphugang (7,060m) a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, and finally, Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,497m.

On arrival in Punakha, check-in at your hotel. After lunch, hike up to the Chimi Lhakhang (temple) which is on a small hilltop. He preached in an unusual way for the time and dramatized the teachings using songs and outrageous sexual humor. Bold Phallus symbols and paintings on the houses or temples are as a result of his influence. It is believed that this temple blesses women who seek fertility. A popular pilgrimage spot for the Bhutanese, it is frequented by childless couples and parents who have difficulty raising children from all over the world.

Day 11: Punakha

Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and still it is the winter the seat of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). Blessed with a temperate climate and fed by the Pho Chu (male) and Mo Chu (female) rivers, Punakha is the most fertile valley in the country. Today, you will begin with a hike up through the fields of rice along the banks of the Mo Chu to the upper end of the valley to see the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning monument recently built by the Queens and consecrated in 1999. Following the hike you will drive towards Khuruthang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and several other winter homes of the royal family before reaching the impressive Punakha Dzong. The Dzong was built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative center of the region. Damaged over the centuries by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has been fully restored in recent years by the present monarch. It is open for visitors during the Punakha festival (early spring) and in the summer months, after the monks body has returned to Thimphu. The Dzong is placed strategically at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. This ancient fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and still serves as the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. A picnic lunch will be served on the banks of the Punak Chu. In the evening, take a relaxing stroll around town.

Day 12: Punakha - Paro

This morning, set off for Paro after an early breakfast and en route visit Semtokha Dzong, “the place of profound tantric teaching”, which stands on a hill a few kilometers out of town. On arrival in Paro, check in at your hotel.

After lunch today, you will visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower, which now houses Bhutan’s National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons & armor, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong, which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore, such as the legend of the four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount Sumeru and other cosmic mandalas. Along the way you will also see the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of 108 temples built in the Himalayas by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marks the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan. In the evening visit a traditional farmhouse for an opportunity to interact with a local family and gain insight into the local lifestyle and cultures.

Day 13: Paro

Today you will embark on an excursion to view the spectacular and famous Taktsang monastery. The trail to the monastery climbs through beautiful pine forest with many trees festooned with Spanish moss and the occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. The hike will take you past a small cafeteria if a break is needed.  Built in 1600’s, this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. It is believed that, in the 8th century Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on the back of a flying tigress to subdue a demon. Guru Rimpoche is believed to have meditated here for three months and this place is considered as a ‘Mecca’ for Buddhists. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang. The uniqueness of this temple lies in the fact that it is in the form of a chorten, one of the very few that exists in Bhutan. The lhakhang was built in 1421 by the famous Tibetan lama, Thongten Gyelpo (1385-1465) who was also known as Changzampa or the builder of iron bridges. It is believed that a demoness was terrorizing the Paro valley and the very hill that the temple is built on turned out to be the demoness’s head. So he built a chorten shaped temple over the demoness’s head or the hills to overpower her, as chortens most of the time play the part of a nail that immobilizes a demon. This evening, once back to your hotel, you can take a leisurely guided walk of the town of Paro.

Experience a quick and shortened version of the traditional game of archery. The normal archery game lasts a day and can extend to several days. Two teams of local archers (2-3 people per team) will demonstrate using the traditional bamboo bow and arrow. You are welcome to join the team. Archery is the national sport of Bhutan. Spectators marvel at the dexterity of the Bhutanese and gasp at other members of a team who stand close to the target and sidestep the flying arrows. The traditional bows and arrows are made from bamboo. There are 2 painted targets placed at each end of the range at about 120 meters apart. Two teams of 11 archers compete, each player shoots two arrows and the first team to get 33 points wins the match. The method of scoring is a little complicated. The best archers wear multi colored scarves tied to the back of their belts. Each time an arrow hits the bulls- eye a short victory dance is performed by the team.

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.

  • Donna F. — February 03, 2018 — Asia

Mark was able to put together the perfect tour! Our guide was very knowledge and we really appreciated her being so flexible with the holiday as we were there for Chinese New Year! She was able to take us to all the sights and part of the highlight was eating traditional Chinese food for New Year's.

  • Marjorie H. — October 01, 2018 — Asia

This tour was so well organized - everything went off perfectly. As two women traveling together in a country where the language barrier was a challenge, it gave us great peace of mind to know that we would be escorted wherever needed. We appreciated not being part of a group - our private tour guides were delightful and the entire trip was very special for my daughter and me.

  • Sandra S. — October 13, 2018 — Asia

The trip was very enjoyable. We gained new insights into China and the Chinese people. I wish we could have stayed longer. There is so much to see. My favorite sites were the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Soldiers, White Jade Buddah and the Shanghai night skyline. Cindy was most helpful in planning our trip. She's truly an asset to your company. Kensington Tours met all of our vacation needs.

  • Gina A. — January 09, 2019 — Asia

I usually don't write reviews but I have to tell you, this was the best vacation. Yuki, our Destination Expert, did an excellent job putting it all together and the guides were excellent. I will be using you guys for my next international vacation.
