Enjoy a journey into the heart of India with its very exciting focus on tigers, unique temples, ending on a high note as you stand in front of the magnificent Taj Mahal. Bandhavgarh has established a reputation as one of the best places in India to observe Tigers, even though it is a relatively small reserve. Panna, the other national park on your itinerary is only about 20 miles from the famous UNESCO World Heritage site of Khajuraho, and the park itself boasts splendid scenery.

Your trip begins in Delhi with a rickshaw ride, accompanied by a private guide, around Old Delhi’s tangle of lanes and colorful bazaars, including Asia’s biggest spice market and famous sweetshops. Bandhavgarh National Park, the first stop on your tiger safari, was formerly the hunting reserve of a Maharaja. The spectacular ruins of a huge hilltop fort, towering an impressive 2,700ft above the forest, attest to its royal association. It's a steep climb, but the views from the ramparts are breathtaking. The 65 square miles of park area that are open to tourism is estimated to have a population of 22 tigers. That’s about one tiger for every 3 square miles.

Drive from Bandhavgarh to your next stop, the national park in Panna - an easy private transfer of just under four hours. Located on the banks of the River Ken, the terrain is gorgeous with deep ravines, cascading waterfalls and thick teak forests, as well as sprawling flatlands, punctuated by deep valleys, gorges, and hills. Your morning safaris start shortly after sunrise, afternoon safaris last a couple of hours and end at sunset. You are accompanied by expert naturalists who are in tune with animal movements and can plot the day's safari. The range of wildlife is incredibly diverse, including wolves, sloth bears, nilgai, sambar, chital, wild boar and Indian crocodile. The deep gorge of Dhundhwa Sehais is the roosting spot for several vulture species as well as the Peregrine falcon. Closer to the expanse of the Ken River, dense woodlands provide a complete change of scenery. While crocodiles can be seen basking on rocky banks, leopard and tiger sightings are evenly distributed between the plateau and the valley.

After a few days of tiger tracking, you are just two and a half hours away from Khajuraho by private transfer. Khajuraho contains the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, which are famous due to the erotic nature of the sculptures. The monuments have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are considered one of the "Seven Wonders of India”. Finish your trip in Agra and the Taj Mahal for that one final and sublime ‘wow’ moment. A resplendent monument to love and an exquisite example of Mughal architecture, it is clear why it has captivated the imagination of travelers since ancient times. Try and see it at sunrise and sunset; the mood it projects, depending on the time of day, can be strikingly different.

Day 2: Delhi

The contrasts between Old and New Delhi are striking – Old Delhi boasts spectacular UNESCO World Heritage monuments and holy sites, whereas New Delhi was designed in a typically British colonial style, with manicured tree-lined avenues and colonial bungalows. Meet with your private guide and driver to spend the day exploring the contrasts between the two sides of the city, and an overall orientation of the city’s finest sites. Start with the Laxminarayan Temple, a modern Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, and the first large-scale Hindu Temple built in Delhi. Drive past the impressive India Gate, a famous 137-foot-high War Memorial Arch that is reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort, the captivating historic fort that served as the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years. It was constructed as the palace for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s new capital, Shahjahanabad when he moved his capital from Agra to bring prestige to his reign. The sprawling fort is 1.5 miles long and ranges in height from 60 to 110 feet. The architecture bears a resemblance to Agra Fort. Next, visit Qutab Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world at 239 feet in height. The minaret is surrounded by many buildings that are fine examples of Indian artwork dating back to 1193 and forms the Qutab complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. End the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Humayun’s Tomb, a complex of Mughal-style buildings dating to the Slave Dynasty of 1268-1287 AD. The complex is the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India, and the mausoleum is built in a similar style as the Taj Mahal in Agra. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Day 4: Bandhavgarh

Set amidst the airy Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh National Park has an established reputation as one of the best places in India to observe tigers in the wild. The tiger reserve was once the former hunting reserve of a Maharaja, and an overgrown hilltop fort dominates the center of the reserve. Head out on a wildlife safari by jeep into the steep ridges, undulating forest and open meadows of the park. The tiger population in Bandhavgarh is at the highest known density in all of India. The park is a hub for the extremely rare white tiger, which was first discovered in nearby Rewa. In addition to being a fertile breeding ground for tigers, the park is also home to the largest breeding population of leopards and various species of deer.

Day 5: Bandhavgarh

In an otherwise arid region, the 40 square mile setting of Bandhavgarh National Park is home to streams and pools of water, an attractive natural feature for both game and predators. The tick Sal forest is home to the iconic Bengal tiger, but also rarely seen animals like the leopard and sloth bear. Head out on a private jeep safari into the park. The lush vegetation is the perfect habitat for a wide variety of animals and birds, and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings. Towering more than 2600 feet over the tree canopy is an ancient natural fort, the former hunting reserve of a Maharaja. Long since deserted and overgrown with vegetation, the fort is worth the steep climb for the breathtaking view from the ramparts, and to see the ancient rock carvings in the vicinity. Keep a lookout for the park's star attraction, the elusive white tiger.

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.

  • Donna F. — February 03, 2018 — Asia

Mark was able to put together the perfect tour! Our guide was very knowledge and we really appreciated her being so flexible with the holiday as we were there for Chinese New Year! She was able to take us to all the sights and part of the highlight was eating traditional Chinese food for New Year's.

  • Marjorie H. — October 01, 2018 — Asia

This tour was so well organized - everything went off perfectly. As two women traveling together in a country where the language barrier was a challenge, it gave us great peace of mind to know that we would be escorted wherever needed. We appreciated not being part of a group - our private tour guides were delightful and the entire trip was very special for my daughter and me.

  • Sandra S. — October 13, 2018 — Asia

The trip was very enjoyable. We gained new insights into China and the Chinese people. I wish we could have stayed longer. There is so much to see. My favorite sites were the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Soldiers, White Jade Buddah and the Shanghai night skyline. Cindy was most helpful in planning our trip. She's truly an asset to your company. Kensington Tours met all of our vacation needs.

  • Gina A. — January 09, 2019 — Asia

I usually don't write reviews but I have to tell you, this was the best vacation. Yuki, our Destination Expert, did an excellent job putting it all together and the guides were excellent. I will be using you guys for my next international vacation.

  • Larkin H. — December 22, 2018 — Asia

It was such a spectacular trip - one we will never forget.

  • Brian S. — November 02, 2018 — Asia

Gayan, our guide in Sri Lanka, was BEYOND amazing. I literally cannot do justice to how fantastic he was for my wife and I on our honeymoon. An amazing guide, a great companion, and an extremely good person.

  • Caryl G. — December 21, 2018 — Asia

It was a stellar experience in every way, but mostly due to the caliber of our tour guide. Tomo was exceptional in all areas - intelligence, expertise, personality and commitment to our comfort and needs. She truly went above and beyond and was a delightful companion, as well. It was actually emotional saying goodbye to each other!
