Opulent palaces and historic hill-forts, a fairy-tale city in the middle of the Thar Desert - the second-largest in the world - magnificent temples and riotously colored, bustling cityscapes, and more can be found in Rajasthan, India’s largest state, tucked away in its northwest corner.

Start your trip in Delhi, where tradition and modernity live happily side by side. The heart of Old Delhi is a 400-year old tangle of lanes with colorful bazaars, complemented by vibrant temples, the towering minaret of Qutab Minar, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort. From Delhi, fly to one of Rajasthan’s gems: Jaisalmer. The 'Golden City' rises from the baked earth of the Thar Desert, the second-largest desert on earth, and reveals itself through its fabulous fort in an almost fairy-tale like fashion. Its remote desert location is a huge draw and a 'Dinner in the Dunes' can be a sublime experience. Even today, it manages to evoke the romance and adventure of what must have been a truly fabled past.

From the middle of the Thar desert to its boundary and you arrive in Jodhpur, which is also called the 'Blue City'. When your private guide takes you to the Mehrangarh Fort, sitting at a lofty 400 feet above the city, you know why: Most of the houses are painted blue. Travel by jeep to visit some traditional villages outside Jodhpur and mingle with locals dressed in their traditional attire. With some luck you might spot black buck, chinkaras or peacocks, freely roaming the countryside.

Your next stop is Udaipur, the city of lakes. The majestic white City Palace offers a spectacular view over Lake Pichola. It's an artificial lake, built in 1364, with two islands, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir, on which some lovely palaces have been built. The Pushkar Camel Fair, held each Oct-November, attracts over 400,000 tourists and over 11,000 camels and horses. But there are plenty of other reasons why this is a stop on your itinerary. It's an important pilgrimage spot for Hindus because of Pushkar Sarovar, a sacred lake, surrounded by 500 temples. Led by your private guide, enjoy the delightful tranquility of the place with a walking tour through town, visit the bazaar or explore several small temples. Sunrise or sunset by the lake are simply fabulous.

Virtually every building in the historical center of Jaipur is painted a terracotta pink, but vibrant colors are literally everywhere in the city, especially around its bustling bazaars. Visit the City Palace and let your private guide explain the fascinating precision of the giant sundial next door at the 'The Observatory'. The Amber Fort, the city's top attraction, is a breathtaking construction of red sandstone and marble. Viewed from a distance, the sand-colored walls literally appear to fade into the surrounding hills.

The conclusion of your trip around this thoroughly captivating part of the country is a visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal, a marvel of exquisite Mughal architecture, and a monument to love in all its white marble glory. It offers different moods of view depending on if you see it at sunrise or sunset. Not surprisingly, many travelers opt to do both.

This tour is a great compliment to the famous Pushkar Camel Fair which runs from the 15th of November to the 23rd of November, 2018.

Day 2: Delhi

The contrasts between Old and New Delhi are striking – Old Delhi boasts spectacular UNESCO World Heritage monuments and holy sites, whereas New Delhi was designed in a typically British colonial style, with manicured tree-lined avenues and colonial bungalows. Meet with your private guide and driver to spend the day exploring the contrasts between the two sides of the city, and an overall orientation of the city’s finest sites. Start with the Laxminarayan Temple, a modern Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, and the first large-scale Hindu Temple built in Delhi. Drive past the impressive India Gate, a famous 137-foot-high War Memorial Arch that is reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort, the captivating historic fort that served as the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years. It was constructed as the palace for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s new capital, Shahjahanabad when he moved his capital from Agra to bring prestige to his reign. The sprawling fort is 1.5 miles long and ranges in height from 60 to 110 feet. The architecture bears a resemblance to Agra Fort. Next, visit Qutab Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world at 239 feet in height. The minaret is surrounded by many buildings that are fine examples of Indian artwork dating back to 1193 and forms the Qutab complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. End the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Humayun’s Tomb, a complex of Mughal-style buildings dating to the Slave Dynasty of 1268-1287 AD. The complex is the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India, and the mausoleum is built in a similar style as the Taj Mahal in Agra. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

The creative energy and ingenuity of Jaipur have long been a drawing point of the city, a lasting legacy of skilled craftspeople and artisans. From the founding of the city in 1727, the royal families and nobles of Jaipur have patronized the craft capital of India, and through their sphere of influence, many valuable and highly prized items can still be found. Using skills passed down through generations, artisans and master craftsmen can be seen in the areas of Ghat Darwaza and Vishveshwar ji. Starting in front of the iconic Palace of the Winds, set out on foot with your private guide and spend a colorful evening walking through the city’s bazaars, mingling and chatting with store vendors and locals alike, and sampling some of the region’s notable culinary favorites. Day 12: Jaipur

Meet your private guide and driver at your hotel, and spend the day exploring some of Jaipur’s iconic monuments. Begin the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent hilltop Amber Fort, also known as the Amer Fort. Originally established in 1592, Maharaja Man Singh I created the imposing citadel on the remains of an earlier 11th-century Jaigarh Fort, and it remained under the control of Kachhawaha rulers until they moved their capital to nearby Jaipur in 1727.

From here, continue to the City Palace, a breathtaking 18th-century royal residence to the rulers of Jaipur. Wander through the sprawling complex and visit areas that have been converted to a museum illustrating the harmony of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Part of the palace, Chandra Mahal, is the home of the current Maharaja and is off-limits.

After the palace, continue to the adjacent Observatory of Jaipur, known as Jantar Mantar. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the world’s largest sundial. The massive astronomical instruments were built from local stone and marble and is a monument to 18th-century architectural innovations during the Mughal period. End with a visit to the red and pink sandstone Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of the Winds. Jaipur’s iconic monument sits adjacent to the opulent City Palace and is adorned in an ornate pale pink façade with a tiered baroque-like build.  The original design was intended to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and public festivals in the streets below without being seen, in observance of the strict rules of “purdah”, which forbade them from appearing in public without face coverings. The 953 small windows called “jharokhas” are decorated with intricate latticework and offer spectacular views of the city. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Meet with a local guide in Fatehpur Sikri to explore the ruins. Constructed during the second half of the 16th-century by Emperor Akbar, the "City of Victory" served as the capital of the Mughal Empire for approximately 14 years, until the capital was moved to Punjab and the city was later abandoned. The well-preserved complex of monuments and temples reflects the Hindu and Muslim architectural styles of the time, and houses one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid. After your visit to the abandoned city, continue by private vehicle to Agra. Approximate travel time is 5-6 hours including touring.

Day 14: Agra

A stunning monument to love, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Taj Mahal has captivated the hearts and minds of travelers for centuries. Meet your private guide and driver for a private tour of this exquisite example Mughal architecture, crafted entirely out of white marble. Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who passed away during childbirth, the iconic mausoleum rises above a well-manicured garden. The inside of the Taj Mahal is equally stunning, with elaborate inlay work comprised of precious and semi-precious stones.

After your leisurely exploration of this New 7 Wonders of the World, continue by car to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort, a red sandstone fort built on a bend of the Yamuna river. The Mughal Dynasty fort served as the main residence of the emperors until the capital was shifted to Delhi, and is an impressive monument with a rich architectural history. Emperor Shah Jahan was once imprisoned inside of Agra Fort, and the tower of his imprisonment offers views of the Taj Mahal in the distance. At the end of the visit, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

The Taj Mahal is one of the most iconic destination attractions, immediately recognized by, probably, most international travelers around the world. A stunning monument to love, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a long time, it has captivated the hearts and minds of travelers for centuries. While the Taj Mahal can be enjoyed at any time of the day, but especially at sunrise and sunset, what is not widely known is that you could be in close proximity to it, yet hardly see other tourists.

To find out, you and your private guide set out on the Heritage Walking Trail, which offers a glimpse of local life in the shadows of the Taj Mahal. The trail is a community-based enterprise and the full cost of this tour goes directly to funding various welfare projects such as upgrading schools, improving education on family and women’s health issues, building toilets etc. and, generally, creating sustainable livelihoods in the area. A local youth from Agra, who is trained as a tour facilitator, acts as your local guide along the trail, explaining the community’s work and introducing you to some of the local people that are part of these projects. The guide will also show you scenic spots from where you can take some amazing shots of the Taj from across the Yamuna River. The Heritage Trail leads you to some of the lesser-known riverfront monuments such as the Ram Bagh, one of the oldest Mughal Gardens, or the beautiful gardens in front of the Chini ka Rouza , a funerary monument, containing the tomb of Allama Afzal Khan Mullah, who was the Prime Minister of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. All of these gardens are maintained by local residents. Quite possibly, at some stage during your walk, the guide might take you up a few stairs of a residential building and lead you to an opening in the wall and out on a little balcony. Right there in front of you, not much more than a stone’s throw away, stands the Taj Mahal.
