A place of diverse landscapes, cultures, languages, and wildlife, Indonesia is a land defined by its variety. Explorers have been drawn to its shores for hundreds of years and that tradition continues to this day, with the country acting like a beacon, attracting modern-day travelers and explorers to the sprawling archipelago that straddles the Pacific “Ring Of Fire” where tectonic forces have worked for eons to sculpt these islands into the wonder that they are today. Upwards of 130 of the volcanoes that helped shape Indonesia remain active, and the islands sometimes feel as if they are themselves alive, still growing. The landscape is slowly changing, all driven by tremendous forces deep below your feet. In Indonesia, you can witness the raw processes that gradually built our planet into the home we know today.

The sprawling archipelago is made up of over 17,500 islands that stretch across the equator from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, yet only about 6000 of these islands are inhabited. Despite being the world’s 4th most populous country, there are still plenty of wild spaces in Indonesia left to explore.

From the dragons of Komodo to the smoldering volcanoes of Sumatra, Java and Bali, Indonesia has the ability to transport us back in time to an early, almost prehistoric landscape, long before cities dotted the planet. As we explore the country further, we can travel forward through time by visiting ancient temples and ruins that rival those found in other better-known sites worldwide. Continuing on from there we can witness the changes brought about by Indonesian independence in 1945, right through to where Indonesia is poised to be a developing nation moving forward in the 21st century. Many of the old ways are still respected, and it’s this blending of old and new that is the hallmark of the nation, making it such a compelling place to explore. Indeed, many explorers have had a deep long-standing relationship with royalty, as they have often been patrons of grand expeditions, sometimes in search of new lands to conquer, or to seek out new trade routes, or for scientific discovery. The island of Bali is a place where it is still possible to rub shoulders with royalty as you discover the sights, sounds, and tastes of this exotic land. ... Show More »

I have traveled extensively across the nation, and it remains one of my favorite destinations on Earth. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika", translated to “Unity in Diversity”, perfectly describes the character of the country. Each island is so very different yet harmonious. Whether you are a lover of the natural world, history, cultures, the ocean, or isolated beaches, you’ll find a variety of opportunities to dive deep into this land that seems to have it all.

Day 2: Jakarta

Meet your knowledgeable private guide for an in-depth journey into Jakarta's history and evolution. Enjoy a private transfer into the heart of the city to learn of its fascinating seafaring roots, discovering the old town of Batavia along the way. Boasting many historical buildings of the old Dutch trading company known as VOC, today's Batavia is still home to the remnants of the once rich and powerful trading organization. Colonial Dutch structures have been transformed into museums, cafes, and galleries. Your first visit will be the lively old harbor of Sunda Kelapa, which once housed a range of Buganese Phinisi Schooners responsible for transporting goods from across the archipelago. Thought to be operational since before the 13th-century, the harbor is a fascinating location that preserves the history of Jakarta. Continue on to Taman Fatahilla, the historical center of old Batavia and now cultural hub and home to three significant museums. Impromptu art performances populate the town square, adding to the excitement and creative ambiance. Visit the city's National Museum, home to one of the country's most complete collections of bronzes and ceramics dating back to the Han, Tang, and Ming Dynasties. The cultural journey continues with visits to the Wayang Museum, dedicated to the art of shadow puppetry, and the Museum of Fine Art and Ceramics, boasting an eclectic assortment of over 400 artworks. Today's lunch is at the beautiful Cafe Batavia, offering colonial splendor, live music, and international cuisine.

Day 3: Jakarta - Yogyakarta

Meet your driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle and English speaking guide.

Fly from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. Flight time is approximately 1 hour.

To most travelers, Yogyakarta is known as the cultural center of Java, but Yogya also has a lot to offer for the food enthusiast. On this Javanese food experience, discover popular treats and meet a range of friendly locals. The experience begins at Tugu Monument, from where you’ll either walk or hop on a becak (pedicab) to see the traditional and modern angkringan’s (food stalls) along the way and head to an area famous for kopi joss; coffee with a brick of burning hot charcoal. After this you’re ready to continue by becak to soak up the hustle and bustle of Jalan Malioboro. Here you’re invited to taste the famous mi kadin (stir fried noodles) at the north alun-alun (square). Later you’ll continue to the alun-alun south of the Kraton where you’ll walk through two legendary waringin trees (banyan trees) while blindfolded. Afterwards continue to the Wijilan area to sample different kinds of Yogya’s famous dish, gudeg (a jackfruit curry). These were just starters, and to wrap up this culinary experience you’ll be seated at one of the famous angkringan restaurants popular with students and families alike. Here you can choose from dozens of freshly made dishes, all freshly prepared in front of you. Wash it all down with some flavorful and colorful drinks like wedanguwuh before being returned to your hotel.

Day 4: Yogyakarta

Set out with your private guide and driver to the royal residence of Mangkunegaran Palace, an estate surrounded by lush gardens and sparkling fountains. Located in central Solo, the palace was founded by a 18th-century dissident prince who was awarded a portion of the former King's fiefdom to ensure loyalty. Here you can find masks, jewelry, gold-plated dresses and an assortment of antique oddities on display. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before a pony-drawn carriage escorts you to the twin Temples of Plaosan, once built by a Hindu Prince in the name of love for his Buddhist bride. The 9th-century complex features remarkable detailed decorations that honor both Hindu and Buddhist religious symbols and carvings. Two giant stone ogres welcome you in the front of each main temple while intricately carved dragon heads adorn the many windows. Continue to the highlight of the day - a visit to the spectacular 9th-century Prambanan Temple complex, a lavish example of ancient architecture. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Prambanan features a collection of sharp, jagged temples comprised of three main inner shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Here you'll experience an exclusive introduction to the ancient site from a curator of the temple, who will accompany you and explain Prambanan's history in detail. Here, residents are supported by a local organization and have implemented a sustainable tourism project to share the Javanese way of life. Traveling in a traditional horse cart known as an andong /dokar, you'll explore this peaceful village and countryside, journeying through small rural lanes and plantations. Your knowledgeable guide will introduce you to Javanese daily life, allowing you to take a closer look at the different village activities such as harvesting and drying chili, making cassava crackers and crafting products from bamboo/pandanus. Next, you'll visit a local house where the community performs traditional percussive gamelan music, having a chance to master this amazing art form yourself. During the tour you'll enjoy a delicious Javanese meal at a Pavilion known as a Pendopo Rumah. Your journey continues to the awe-inspiring Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 8th-century artistic and architectural marvel takes the shape of a sacred mandala when seen from above. A member of the Borobudur Conservation Association will give you an exclusive introduction to the intricate details of the incredible structure's 2,600 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues. Next you'll tour the Pawon Temple built with volcanic stones in a blend of Javanese, Hindu and Indian art, and the exquisite 9th-century Mendut Buddhist Temple and Monastery. He will take you to the outskirts of Ubud, providing insights into the daily rural life along the way. Over the course of a 90-minute walk, track past a rice-field where you can see how Balinese farmers cultivate the land as your guide explains the rice growing process from cultivation and maintenance through to harvesting and details the preservation efforts underway to ensure harmony with the natural environment. Day 8: Ubud (Bali)

In the cooler hours of the early morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to drive up through the lingering mists of Kintamani to reach the rim of the ancient Batur caldera. Stretch your legs and enjoy the spectacular vistas that emerge as the clouds and mists, sublime in the morning light, part to reveal Mount Rinjani in Lombok and the trinity of volcanoes revered as the primordial gods that begat the seven first tribes of Bali. Sip on coffee and dine local snacks for breakfast as the sun rises to reveal Mount Batur, Mount Abang and Mount Agung, with Lake Batur gleaming in between. Descend into the caldera to reach awaiting bicycles, then set off on a near six-mile (nine-kilometer) ride on a sealed road among the undulating plains of historic lava flows, making several stops along the way. Visit waterfalls, springs, caverns, lava formations and ash cones while your guide explains how the various eruptions have formed the present landscape. Where the road ends, you’ll continue by foot to enter a sea of hardened lava from the more recent eruptions between 1963 and 1999, some of which are currently being reforested with eucalyptus trees. This peaceful walk takes you over the location of the original village of Batur, buried under the lava flows since 1928, bringing you to the lake shore. Visit some local temples and learn of their past and present significance, before crossing the lake by kayak. Paddle from the pagoda of Pura Patirtan, part of the Pura Jati Complex at the ancient site of Batur village, across to Dalem Pingit pagoda on shores of Kedisan village. A floating restaurant is your final oasis. Here time stands still while you are treated to tea and local delicacies. Before long, a vehicle will arrive to return you to your accommodation.

  • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!
