Blessed with a centuries-old culture that embraces the past and the future with equal zeal, gorgeous landscapes seemingly pulled straight from silkscreens, and a dazzling variety of experiences both indoors and out, Japan is one of our favorite places. This sweeping grand journey that touches both the mainland and distant Okinawa will make it one of your favorites, too.

We begin in Tokyo, the busy Japanese capital, where you’ll come face-to-face with the fascinating juxtaposition of tradition and modernity that defines contemporary Japan. With a private guide, explore the pre-World War II neighborhood of Asakusa, the ancient Senso-ji temple, and the Meiji Shrine before delving into Japan’s rich cultural history with private swordsmanship and calligraphy demonstrations. Later near Hakone, discover the incredible volcanic landscapes of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park against the picturesque backdrop of Mount Fuji.

Next, venture into the Hida Mountains region to Takayama for a private tasting of the city’s most famous export: sake. Near the coast of the Sea of Japan, your next stop is Kanazawa, one-time seat of the powerful Maeda clan and a treasure trove of traditional castles and gardens, not to mention the famous Nagamachi samurai district. A private guide will introduce you to the somber memorials and monuments of Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park, then ferry you across the bay to the forested slopes of Miyajima Island, one of the country’s most peaceful and sacred sites. Next stop: serene Kyoto. Here, you’ll visit Kinkaku Temple, Nijo Castle, and Tenryu Temple – three of the city’s 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites – with a private guide, stroll the gorgeous bamboo groves of Arashiyama, meet the famed deer of Nara Park, and stand before the 49-foot-tall Daibutsu in Nara’s cherished Todai Temple. ... Finally, take to the skies and fly to the island prefecture of Okinawa (flight not included), where you’ll be treated to a private workshop of traditional shuri weaving and explore the UNESCO-protected Shuri Castle. A country filled with wonders, Japan is most deserving of a grand journey. You are, too.

Day 2: Tokyo

Spend a half day discovering Tokyo’s fascinating sites that juxtapose traditional temples and gardens with futuristic skyscrapers. With the help of your local guide, set out on the city’s comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system. Begin with a visit to the outside of the Imperial Palace, home of Japan’s Imperial Family. Head to Asakusa, the city’s old town area. Soak up the atmosphere of traditional Tokyo of yesteryear, exploring Tokyo’s oldest and most popular temple, Sensoji Temple, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple. Sensoji backs onto Nakamise, a shopping street that has provided temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and souvenirs for centuries.

Hop on the subway for a journey across the city to the Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. Japan’s feudal era came to an end during the Meiji period, and the country found itself modernizing and westernizing during this time. If time permits, stroll along Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree-lined avenue home to the flagship stores of the world’s top fashion brands. brands. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that this tour includes a private guide. However, rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will explore Tokyo by making use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 3: Tokyo

A long and rich cultural heritage defines Japan’s history, including a fascinating practice of swordsmanship called Iaido and the skilled precision of shodo, Japanese calligraphy. Experience a captivating day combining the finer elements of Samurai history and a private lesson in writing kanji with your private guide, making use of public transportation. Start with a lesson in Iaido, a traditional form of highly skilled Japanese martial arts swordsmanship, dating back to the mid-1500s. Iaido’s emphasis is on precise, controlled, fluid motion, and is sometimes referred to as ‘moving Zen’. During the lesson, there is an opportunity to practice actual cutting techniques on bamboo or straw blocks using real Iaido swords.

Set aside the sword in favor of the pen for your next lesson in shodo, the traditional Japanese calligraphy. When writing kanji (Japanese logographic characters), each stroke has its proper way to begin and end, with a specific order and path to follow. The slightest lapse in concentration will show in one’s work. After your lesson, continue to Shinjuku’s Samurai Museum. The Samurai warriors were members of the country’s military nobility in medieval Japan and remain an important figure in Japanese popular culture today. The museum is located in a traditional Japanese building, a noticeable contrast to the neon jungle of Shinjuku. The museum hosts an incredible collection of Samurai armor, swords, and personal artifacts throughout history. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 4: Tokyo - Hakone

Leave behind the hustle and bustle of Tokyo in favor of a day in Hakone, the gateway to Japan’s tallest mountain Mt. Fuji and the surrounding national park. Your local guide will meet you at your hotel this morning and accompany you on your private drive from Tokyo. Spend the day exploring Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, making use of your private vehicle as well as Hakone’s experiential forms of transport. Ride the world’s second longest cable car up Mt. Owakudani, passing over sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers in this active volcanic area. Sample Hakone’s famous local treat, the black eggs of Owakudani. The eggs are hard boiled in Hakone’s well known sulfuric hot springs, and local legend has it that eating one of these eggs will add seven years to your life. Board a majestic pirate ship and sail across Lake Ashinoko, a lake formed by a volcanic eruption 3000 years ago. Throughout the day there is a chance to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji, however, please keep in mind that she is a notoriously shy mountain and it needs to be a clear day.

Accommodation: Kinnotake Tonosawa

Featuring open-air hot spring bath and relaxation spa, Kinnotake Tonosawa is a beautiful ryokan in Hakone surrounded by water and bamboo trees. The accommodation concept is based on a nation-wide famous story "Takemonogatari" from "Kaguyahime", a story of a woman who fell in love with the emperor but their love lasting only for a moment until she is sent to the moon. Kinnotake Tonosawa has free Wi-Fi, private parking and on-site bar with view. All rooms include a private bathroom equipped with bath tub with bath robes and slippers. Some rooms have a seating area with views of either mountains or garden. From the accommodation, Hakone Open-Air Museum is 3.6 kilometers away and Hakone Gora Park is 4.3 kilometers away.

Day 7: Takayama - Kanazawa

Journey from Takayama to Kanazawa today, enjoying a full day of private touring along the way. Your local guide will join you this morning to visit the beautifully preserved old town of Takayama and the UNESCO site of Shirakawa-go village. Begin with a visit to the local Miyagawa Market, located along the Miyagawa River in the old town. The colorful stands are lined with local crafts, produce and flowers. Next, walk through the well-preserved Sanmachi Suji district, the traditional home of Takayama merchants and sake brewers for almost 300 years. Historical quaint inns, shops and taverns line the streets and trace their history back many generations. Visit Takayama Jinya, the local government office headed by officials dispatched from Edo. Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The building complex was in official use until 1969, and is now open to the public as an interesting museum reflecting on Japan's history. End the morning by stopping at a local sake brewery to sample Japan's national brew. The terroir of Takayama's sake is renowned nation-wide, thanks to the clear water of its surroundings. In the afternoon reach Shirakawa-go region. With your guide, visit the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses of the village, some of which are more than 250 years old.  Gassho-zukkuri translates as ‘Praying Hands’, as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer, and are designed to withstand the heavy snows which fall in the region. Part ways with your guide in Shirakawa-go, and continue to Kanazawa with your private driver.

Day 8: Kanazawa

During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda Clan, the second most powerful feudal clan; Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). During World War Two, Kanazawa was Japan's second largest city (after Kyoto) to escape destruction by air raids. Consequently, parts of the old castle town, such as the Nagamachi samurai district and chaya entertainment districts, have survived.  Today, the city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and districts, as well as modern museums. A full day to explore Kanazawa with a local guide. The highlight of any visit to Kanazawa is Kenroku-en garden.  Ranked one of the top three in Japan, its breathtaking beauty shines through in any season.  You will also visiting imposing Kanazawa castle, located next to the garden. Nearby Kagayuzen Kaikan offers demonstrations of the centuries-old Yuzen silk painting technique. Head to visit the Nagamachi Samurai district, where you can enter the Nomura Samurai House, a traditional Japanese home with tea-ceremony room, an interior courtyard garden and artifacts from the Edo period.  The Higashi Chaya District is the largest and by far the most interesting of Kanazawa’s Geisha Districts. Many of the buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a kura warehouse style room which is completely covered in gold leaf; you will also have a chance to visit the Shima teahouse, which is still an operating tea house, but opens its doors to the public. You can enjoy a cup of green tea here to finish the day.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Kanazawa's efficient local transit system.

Stroll through the park and discover the many memorials, monuments and statues in the park before heading into the Museum itself. From Hiroshima, a short ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island.  A small sacred island located in the Island Sea, it has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find perhaps the most photographed site in Japan - The Floating Torii Gate. Designated as one of Japan's '3 Most Beautiful Views', the shrine it belongs to dates back to the 6th century with the present structure dating back to the 12th century. The harmoniously arranged buildings reveal great artistic and technical skill, and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mere 'commoners' were not allowed to set foot on this holy place, and even now it is forbidden to give birth or die on the island!  You will have time to explore the island and its many shrines and temples, sample local goodies like maple leaf shaped cakes before heading back to your hotel.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will make use of Hiroshima's efficient local transit system.

Kyoto is home to an impressive 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and two of the most memorable ones are Kinkakuji Temple and Nijo Castle. Meet your local guide in your hotel lobby for a half day tour of Kyoto, traveling by taxi.  Start with a visit to Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), which was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun. After his death in 1408, it became a Buddhist Temple as per the Shogun’s final wishes and is now one of Kyoto’s most famous temples.

Next is Nijo Castle, an ornamental castle that was built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate as his Kyoto residence and is surrounded by stunning surrounding gardens. The main building was completed in 1603 and is famous for its architecture, decorated sliding doors and ‘chirping’ nightingale floors. The castle served as an imperial palace briefly during the 19th century. Next, take a walk through Nishiki Market, a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen", this lively retail market specializes in all things food related, like fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware, and is a great place to find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood, and sushi. Day 12: Kyoto

Spend a half day exploring the scenic Arashiyama district on the western outskirts of Kyoto with your local guide, traveling by taxi. The area has been a popular destination since the Heian Period (794-1185) when nobles would enjoy its natural setting. Okochi Mountain Villa is the former villa of the famous samurai film star Okochi Denjiro (1896-1962), and consists of several beautiful gardens and buildings, including living quarters, tea houses and a Zen meditation hall. Take a break here and enjoy some “Matcha” green tea with a snack.

With your energy replenished, take a stroll through Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves, which are particularly attractive when there is a light wind and the tall bamboo stalks sway gently back and forth. The bamboo has been used to manufacture various products, such as baskets, cups, boxes, and mats at local workshops for centuries. Visit Nonomiya Shrine,  a Shinto shrine where in ancient times, unmarried imperial princesses stayed for a year or more to purify themselves. Next, visit Tenryuji Temple, ranked among Kyoto's five great Zen temples, and the largest and most impressive temple in Arashiyama. Founded in 1339 at the beginning of the Muromachi Period (1338-1573), the temple is one of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition to its temple buildings, there are attractive gardens with walking paths. In a traditional building inside the temple grounds overlooking the beautifully landscaped garden, appreciate the experience of a vegetarian "shojin-ryori" (traditional Buddhist cuisine) lunch built around yuba, tofu, and seasonal vegetables. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 13: Kyoto

Leave behind the city and journey approximately 45 minutes to Nara with your local guide, traveling by taxi and local train. Nara served as Japan’s capital for 74 years during the 8th century and many of the temples and shrines built at that time still remain. Visit Todaiji temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest Buddha. Next stop is Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, established in 768 AD and famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshipers. Take a stroll through Nara Park, called Deer Park by locals due to the large population of more than 1,000 tame deer living there. On the way back from Nara, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, which was used in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”.  The 10,000 red tori gates form a path up the mountain behind the temple, and they are an iconic image of Japan. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Visit the Naha City Traditional Arts & Crafts Center, where traditional crafts such as tsuboyaki (pottery), bingata, Ryuku glass and Ryuku lacquerware are exhibited. Enjoy a hands-on 60-minute workshop on traditional shuri weaving, and bring home your creation as a memorable souvenir. Stop for a lunch break (not included) before heading over to the 14th century Shuri Castle. Shuri was once the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom and thus an important historical site to see while in Naha. Shuri Castle (Shurijo) served as the administrative center and residence of the Ryukyu kings for several centuries until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879, and the castle sustained heavy damage during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 during World War II. The grounds were carefully reconstructed in the 1990s, and the castle is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to your hotel by private vehicle.

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

  • Ann L — June 05, 2019 — Asia

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

  • Sandra S — February 09, 2019 — Asia

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.
