Day 2: Tokyo

Today, you will enjoy a half day tour of the fascinating city of Tokyo. You will make use of Tokyo's comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system, with the help of a local guide. Your day begins with a visit to the outside Imperial Palace, home of Japan’s Imperial Family. Next, you will travel to Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town where you can experience the atmosphere of old Tokyo. Subsequently, you will visit Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest temple and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. You will then take the subway across town to Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. If time permits, you can take a walk to the Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree lined avenue home to the flagship stores of the world’s top fashion brands. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that this tour includes a private guide. However, rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will explore Tokyo by making use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 3: Tokyo

The world’s largest fish market, Tsukiji Market handles about 2,888 tons of marine products a day worth about 2.8 billion yen (US$20million). Some 450 kinds of fish are received; from penny-per-piece sardines to golden brown dried sea slug caviar, a bargain at US$473 a pound. Some of the giant tuna go for well over 1,000,000 JPY each (US$8000). Take time to wander through this enormous market, exploring both the vegetable and fruit areas plus the impressive seafood section. There may also be an opportunity to see a complete tuna being cut and filleted. You will then visit a typical Japanese home. Your guide will answer all your questions about Japanese culture and everyday life in Tokyo during the transfer by public transportation. Learn to prepare maki sushi (rolled sushi), gunkan maki (sushi rice wrapped with a strip of seaweed and topped with soft ingredients), and nigiri sushi (sushi rice topped with a slice of raw fish). You will then get to enjoy your home made sushi for lunch.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Today you will have the opportunity to explore three of Tokyo's centers of youth fashion and pop culture. You will begin in Shibuya, Tokyo's main center for youth fashion and culture. Its streets are the birthplace to many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends and are also home to the famous five-way "scramble crossing". Next, you will travel to Harajuku and Takeshita-Dori (Cat Street). This famous street is lined with fashion boutiques, cafes, and restaurants for your enjoyment. Whether you enjoy goth, punk or any other style, there is a shop in Harajuku that will cater to you. Known as Electric Town, Akihabara was originally famous for its many electronics shops. However in more recent years, Akihabara has gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture, and many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. You will end the afternoon with a cup of coffee or tea in one of Tokyo’s famous maid cafes where the waitresses dress up and act like maids. You will also have the unique opportunity to take a souvenir photo with one of the maids. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that this tour includes a private guide. However, rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will explore Tokyo by making use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Because we traveled in several cities we had many different guides. They were all very good, with some being outstanding. We would like to especially commend our Beijing guide, Jerry Wang, for his expert and very personalized guidance.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
