Day 2: Tokyo

Today you will experience traditional Tokyo by private transportation. The Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, and the residence of Japan's Imperial Family. Although the Palace is not open to the public, from Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace, you can view the Nijubashi, two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The stone bridge in front is called Meganebashi (Eyeglass Bridge) for its looks. Next, you will have the unforgettable opportunity to participate in an authentic tea ceremony. Sample freshly made green tea in a Japanese style tearoom. The tea masters are always willing to instruct newcomers on the finer points of enjoying tea. Meiji Shrine is Tokyo’s most famous shrine, dedicated to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji, and the park that surrounds the shrine is a forest of some 120,000 trees of 365 different species.  The shrine is a popular site for Japanese Weddings: if you are lucky you may see a bride and groom dressed in traditional Shinto wedding attire. Take a walk through Omotesando, commonly referred to as Tokyo’s Champs-Elysees. This broad, tree lined avenue features a multitude of fashion flagship stores designed by internationally renowned architects within a short distance of each other.  End the day at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s tallest and most distinctive skyscrapers. The 243 meter tall building has two towers, and each houses an observatory at a height of 202 meters, which provide good panoramic views of Tokyo and beyond. With favorable weather conditions, famous landmarks such as Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo Dome can be seen from here. After the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Day 3: Tokyo

The National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo opened in 1952 as the first national art museum, and it strives to heighten public interest in modern art. As a long-awaited permanent exhibition facility for contemporary art, the museum boasts a total of 4,500 square meters (48,438 square feet) of exhibition space - one of the largest art museums in Asia. In the collection galleries on the fourth to second floors, MOMAT Collection presents 200 important works selected from our rich collection of more than 12,000 items. The exhibits date from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, ranging from Japanese- and Western-style paintings, prints, watercolors, drawings and sculptures to photographs and videos. The Crafts Gallery opened in 1977 as an annex to the museum, and it displays modern crafts and design including ceramics, glasswork, lacquer ware, woodwork, bamboo work, textiles, doll, metalwork, industrial design and graphic design. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Transfer by train from Tokyo to Kanazawa. Train ride is approximately 2.5 hours.

Meet your driver for a train station transfer with a private vehicle.

Charming Kanazawa is not only home to beautiful art, architecture and to one of Japan’s most exquisite cuisines; it is also the birthplace of refined traditional crafts valued as some of the finest in the country. Today you will experience hands on two of the crafts that make Kanazawa famous. First, Kanagawa is synonymous with gold leaf. Try your hand at decorating a small lacquer plate or a pair of chopsticks with this thin, sparkling, precious product. Next, you will experience "Kagayuzen," a form of kimono cloth dyeing that is exquisitely a Kanazawa specialty. You will decorate a handkerchief using this traditional technique. You will get to keep your creations as souvenirs of this memorable day. Tour ends in central Kanazawa.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will make use of Kanazawa’s efficient local transit system.

Accommodation: Asadaya (4*)

Asadaya is more than 140 years old and the most famous ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, in Kanazawa. It has only five elaborate rooms for guests in order to provide perfect services in accordance with the "sukiya" style of simplicity. There is a breathtaking collection of sword guards from the Edo period. They were the status symbols of Samurais, or warriors, engraved with their family crests or Japanese flora and fauna. Asadaya is only ten minutes from Kanazawa station by taxi.

Day 5: Kanazawa

During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda Clan, the second most powerful feudal clan; Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). During World War Two, Kanazawa was Japan's second largest city (after Kyoto) to escape destruction by air raids. Consequently, parts of the old castle town, such as the Nagamachi samurai district and chaya entertainment districts, have survived.  Today, the city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and districts, as well as modern museums. A full day to explore Kanazawa with a local guide. The highlight of any visit to Kanazawa is Kenroku-en garden.  Ranked one of the top three in Japan, its breathtaking beauty shines through in any season.  You will also visiting imposing Kanazawa castle, located next to the garden. Nearby Kagayuzen Kaikan offers demonstrations of the centuries-old Yuzen silk painting technique. Head to visit the Nagamachi Samurai district, where you can enter the the Nomura Samurai House, a traditional Japanese home with tea-ceremony room, an interior courtyard garden and artifacts from the Edo period.  The Higashi Chaya District is the largest and by far the most interesting of Kanazawa’s Geisha Districts. Many of the buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a kura warehouse style room which is completely covered in gold leaf; you will also have a chance to visit the Shima teahouse, which is still an operating tea house, but opens its doors to the public. You can enjoy a cup of green tea here to finish the day.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Kanazawa's efficient local transit system.

Day 7: Hiroshima

Your guide will meet you at your hotel to take you on a tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima by street car, train and ferry. Start the day with a visit to the Peace Memorial Park. The area where the park now lies was ground zero for the Atomic Bomb on 6th August 1945. After the bombing the Memorial Park was created and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the attack. Stroll through the park and discover the many memorials, monuments and statues in the park before heading into the Museum itself. From Hiroshima, a short ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island.  A small sacred island located in the Island Sea, it has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find perhaps the most photographed site in Japan - The Floating Torii Gate. Designated as one of Japan's '3 Most Beautiful Views', the shrine it belongs to dates back to the 6th century with the present structure dating back to the 12th century. The harmoniously arranged buildings reveal great artistic and technical skill, and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mere 'commoners' were not allowed to set foot on this holy place, and even now it is forbidden to give birth or die on the island!  You will have time to explore the island and its many shrines and temples, sample local goodies like maple leaf shaped cakes before heading back to your hotel.

Day 8: Hiroshima - Naoshima

The Sheraton Hiroshima is located directly across from the Japan Rail train station, and so departing by train is hassle-free. An assistant will greet you in the hotel lobby and accompany you to the appropriate platform.

This morning make the 150 minute journey by train to Okayama with your guide. You will be met in Okayama by a car that will take you to Uno port, where you will ride the ferry to Naoshima.

Spend the day exploring the island. Honmura, a small port town on Naoshima's eastern coast, is home to the Art House Project, a collection of abandoned houses, workshops, a temple and a shrine that have been converted into art installations and venues for contemporary art by artists and architects from Japan and abroad. The art houses are scattered throughout town, and most of them are unassuming from the street, blending into the surrounding traditional Japanese neighborhood. The interior of each, however, has been given over to artists to convert into whatever suits their artistic vision.

The Chichu Art Museum is a unique modern art museum built into a hillside overlooking the southern coast of Naoshima. The museum building, designed by Ando Tadao and itself a work of art, is mostly located underground and solely utilizes natural light to illuminate the artwork. This creates a viewing experience that is heavily influenced by the surrounding natural environment. There are many other smaller art installations and museums around the museum which your guide will be happy to show you.

Tonight, have dinner at Benesse House’s renowned French restaurant.

Accommodation: Benesse House - Park Building (BD) (Standard)

Benesse House is a unique facility that combines the functions of both museum and hotel. Four hotel facilities make up the accommodation, all of which were designed by Tadao Ando - Museum, Oval, Park and Beach. Park offers views of a verdant green lawn and the sparkling sea, with the mountains of Shikoku rising up in the distance against a bright blue sky. The Park building contains a restaurant, lounge, and shops, as well as art spaces throughout the facility.

Day 10: Kyoto

Visit some of Kyoto’s best gardens with a private guide. Ryoanji is maybe the most famous rock zen garden of Japan. It was built on the grounds of a villa of the Fujiwara clan in the Heian period (794-1185). Kinkaku-ji (the more popular name for its actual name Rokuon-ji) is one of the most famous temples in Japan and a definite must-see on your Kyoto bucket list. The garden is an extraordinary example of a Japanese strolling garden of the Muromachi period. The Ninomaru gardens of the Nijo castle have been designed by garden master Kobori Enshu. There are numerous cherry and plum trees, which bloom between March and April. The garden has a large pond with three islands that symbolize Horai-San, and the crane and Turtle Mountains of the Taoist mythology. Lastly, you will visit the Outside Imperial Palace Gardens, whose style is based on the Heian shinden-zukuri style, with large gravel courtyards and a small pond garden. (Please note you will not enter the Imperial Palace itself).

First off, journey to the eastern part of Kyoto, which is a famous pottery district. Here you will have the opportunity to make a pot by yourself. The pottery laboratory will then bake it and send it directly to your home in your country! Next, visit a Yuzen Gallery. Yuzen is the method of dying Kimono. At the Gallery, you will be able to try your hand at Yuzen dying as well, and keep your work of art as souvenir. After a traditional “bento box” lunch, you will visit Nijo Castle, the 17th century ornamental castle built for a shogun, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. To conclude the day, you will walk through Nishiki Food Market, which will mesmerize you with a lot of stands for traditional Japanese food ingredients. Finally, visit Gion, the famous geisha district, where if lucky you will be able to see Geisha as the hurry to the first appointment of the evening. • Patrick T — August 22, 2017 — Asia

Preparations were excellent - we really appreciated the attention to detail. The VIP Visa handling in Vietnam & Cambodia was much appreciated also. Guides were outstanding - particularly Borin in Cambodia.

  • Levi P — August 22, 2017 — Asia

Used Kensington Tours to book my honeymoon in the foreign speaking country of Thailand. It was great to not have to worry about transportation or accommodation. Our itinerary was amazing but the best part was probably our English speaking guides. We had three separate guides and each of them became like close friend to us. The travel was long but I wouldn't trade our experience in Thailand for anything.

  • Karen K — August 22, 2017 — Asia

I went to private tour w Kensington to Japan for 3 weeks last month. It was incredible. My daughter was studying in Niigata so I wanted her to hook up with me periodically throughout my tour to see all the highlights of Japan. It worked out perfectly. I'd personally like to thank Adam Watkins who was incredible with detail, kindness and professionalism. The guide selection was a perfect fit. I cannot say enough about my and my daughter's experience with Kensington Tours. A trip of a lifetime.

  • Debra Y — August 22, 2017 — Asia

All the accommodations were great. The guides were very personable and knowledgeable. As a woman traveling alone, I never felt unsafe.

  • Kathleen P — August 22, 2017 — Asia
