A cultural phenomenon since the 1950s (and with roots stretching even further back in history), anime rivals only sushi and Godzilla as Japan’s most universally beloved cultural export. Those who love Japanese pop culture really love it, and it’s for those dedicated Japanophiles and otaku that we’ve developed this eye-popping love-letter of a trip.

The adventure begins in the only place it can: fascinating and futuristic Tokyo. First, witness the curious dichotomy of ancient and modern on a private half-day tour with stops at the Imperial Palace, the seventh-century Senso Temple, and the forested Meiji Shrine, as well as the stylish Omotesando high street and the Asakusa district – a living time capsule of pre-World War II Tokyo – before visiting the Ghibli Museum, a mecca for Japanese anime. Later, lose yourself in the colorful world of manga on private tours of J World and the Pokémon Center (travel advisory: Here be pocket monsters!) before spending an afternoon in the famous Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara districts, ground-zero for Japan’s youth culture and street-style scenes. Before departing Tokyo, you’ll also get to try your hand at the ancient arts of laido (swordsmanship) and shodo (calligraphy), visit the Shinjuku Samurai Museum, and dine out at the outlandish Robot Restaurant.

After a day spent exploring the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and unwinding for the night at a traditional ryokan, you’ll arrive in the heartland of traditional Japanese culture: Kyoto. After taking in the sites, including the serene Kinkaku-ji , also known as the "Golden Pavilion", Shinto shrines, and the elegant Nijo Castle, spend a full day studying the blade in the village of Iga, where some of the first shinobi were trained in the art of ninjitsu. After a visit to Kyoto’s International Manga Museum, the tour continues to its last stop: Osaka, where you’ll sample some of the country’s top street food on an evening tour before discovering the city’s urban highlights – Osaka Castle, the foodie haven of Dotombori, and the Kuchu Teien Observatory high atop the city’s tallest building.

Day 2: Tokyo

Spend a half day discovering Tokyo’s fascinating sites that juxtapose traditional temples and gardens with futuristic skyscrapers. With the help of your local guide, set out on the city’s comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system. Begin with a visit to the outside of the Imperial Palace, home of Japan’s Imperial Family. Head to Asakusa, the city’s old town area. Soak up the atmosphere of traditional Tokyo of yesteryear, exploring Tokyo’s oldest and most popular temple, Sensoji Temple, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple. Sensoji backs onto Nakamise, a shopping street that has provided temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and souvenirs for centuries.

Hop on the subway for a journey across the city to the Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. Japan’s feudal era came to an end during the Meiji period, and the country found itself modernizing and westernizing during this time. If time permits, stroll along Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree-lined avenue home to the flagship stores of the world’s top fashion brands. brands. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 3: Tokyo

Anime (Japanese animation) and manga (comics) are loved throughout the world and are just as important a piece of Japanese culture as more traditional arts are. On this day tour a local guide will take you around to discover all about manga and anime. First stop is J World, an  amusement park dedicated to the heroes of the Shonen Jump stories, the best-selling magazine in Japan where popular comics such as One Piece and Naruto are serialized. Continue on to the Pokémon Centre where you will be able to find all sorts of items related to the pocket monsters. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo's efficient local transit system.

This afternoon, explore three of Tokyo's vibrant centers of youth fashion and pop culture with your private local guide. Begin in Shibuya, Tokyo's main center for youth fashion and culture. Its streets are the birthplace of many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends and the area is also home to the famous five-way "scramble crossing". The Shibuya Crossing is rumored to be the busiest intersection in the world. Next, travel to Harajuku and Takeshita-Dori (Cat Street). This famous street is lined with quirky fashion boutiques, cafes, and restaurants for your enjoyment. Harajuku caters to every imaginable style and is the epicenter of Japanese “kawaii”, the culture of cuteness. Continue to Akihabara, also known as Electric Town, an area that was originally famous for its many electronics shops. Akihabara is renowned as the center of Japan’s otaku culture, a culture of diehard fans in anime and manga fandom. Many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. The last stop at one of Tokyo’s famous pet cafes. Here you can enjoy a beverage and dessert and befriend a few of Tokyo’s cuddly creatures. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel. Day 4: Tokyo

A long and rich cultural heritage defines Japan’s history, including a fascinating practice of swordsmanship called Iaido and the skilled precision of shodo, Japanese calligraphy. Experience a captivating day combining the finer elements of Samurai history and a private lesson in writing kanji with your private guide, making use of public transportation. Start with a lesson in Iaido, a traditional form of highly skilled Japanese martial arts swordsmanship, dating back to the mid-1500s. Iaido’s emphasis is on precise, controlled, fluid motion, and is sometimes referred to as ‘moving Zen’. During the lesson, there is an opportunity to practice actual cutting techniques on bamboo or straw blocks using real Iaido swords.

Set aside the sword in favor of the pen for your next lesson in shodo, the traditional Japanese calligraphy. When writing kanji (Japanese logographic characters), each stroke has its proper way to begin and end, with a specific order and path to follow. The slightest lapse in concentration will show in one’s work. After your lesson, continue to Shinjuku’s Samurai Museum. The Samurai warriors were members of the country’s military nobility in medieval Japan and remain an important figure in Japanese popular culture today. The museum is located in a traditional Japanese building, a noticeable contrast to the neon jungle of Shinjuku. The museum hosts an incredible collection of Samurai armor, swords, and personal artifacts throughout history. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Enjoy Tokyo's theme restaurant featuring a pop-culture show with robotic monsters, dancers and lasers.

Day 5: Tokyo - Hakone

Leave behind the hustle and bustle of Tokyo in favor of a day in Hakone, the gateway to Japan’s tallest mountain Mt. Fuji and the surrounding national park. Your local guide will meet you at your hotel this morning and accompany you on your private drive from Tokyo. Spend the day exploring Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, making use of your private vehicle as well as Hakone’s experiential forms of transport. Ride the world’s second longest cable car up Mt. Owakudani, passing over sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers in this active volcanic area. Sample Hakone’s famous local treat, the black eggs of Owakudani. The eggs are hard boiled in Hakone’s well known sulfuric hot springs, and local legend has it that eating one of these eggs will add seven years to your life. Board a majestic pirate ship and sail across Lake Ashinoko, a lake formed by a volcanic eruption 3000 years ago. Throughout the day there is a chance to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji, however, please keep in mind that she is a notoriously shy mountain and it needs to be a clear day.

Accommodation: Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu (4*)

Welcome to Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu, a true sanctuary facing magnificent mountain in Hakone, away from your bustling city life. Our ryokan's concept is the harmony of authentic Japanese hospitality and nature. You can watch the sunrise while bathing in our enormous open-air onsen with infinite horizon view. In addition, all rooms come with their own private open-air bath. In the evening, relish the beautifully presented delicious Japanese cuisine at your table. Enjoy the heavenly experience of the true Japanese service throughout your stay. Breakfast options include a choice of Western or Japanese menu.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum and Hakone Gora Park are only a 6-minute bus ride from Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu. Chisuji Falls is a 13-minute walk away, and Owakudani Valley is 1.4 miles away.

Relax on the scenic train from Hakone's Odawara station to Kyoto. The train ride is approximately 2 hours.

The Hotel Granvia Kyoto is located directly above the Japan Rail Kyoto Station. The walk from the train to your hotel is quite short and simple, but for your added comfort, an assistant will greet you at the station and help you find the entrance to the hotel.

When using the Haruka Express from Kansai International Airport: Exit via the JR Chuo Main Exit and take the escalator on your right to the Lobby on the 2nd floor of the hotel.

Kyoto is home to an impressive 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and two of the most memorable ones are Kinkakuji Temple and Nijo Castle. Meet your local guide in your hotel lobby for a half day tour of Kyoto, traveling by taxi.  Start with a visit to Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), which was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun. After his death in 1408, it became a Buddhist Temple as per the Shogun’s final wishes and is now one of Kyoto’s most famous temples.

Next is Nijo Castle, an ornamental castle that was built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate as his Kyoto residence and is surrounded by stunning surrounding gardens. The main building was completed in 1603 and is famous for its architecture, decorated sliding doors and ‘chirping’ nightingale floors. The castle served as an imperial palace briefly during the 19th century. Next, take a walk through Nishiki Market, a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen", this lively retail market specializes in all things food related, like fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware, and is a great place to find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood, and sushi. You may wish to stop for lunch in this area (not included). At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Accommodation: Granvia Kyoto (4*)

Hotel Granvia Kyoto is an integral part of the JR Kyoto Station Building, the visually striking architectural masterpiece which also includes a department store, museum, musical theater, and a vast underground shopping mall. From this convenient location, hotel guests have direct and easy access to and from Kansai International Airport and major metropolitan destinations across Japan. With its elegant accommodations, including beautifully appointed guestrooms, there is simply no better place to stay in Kyoto. Day 7: Kyoto

With a private guide, you will take the 1.5 hour private vehicle journey to Iga Village. Iga is known as the birthplace of the Iga-ryu ninja, one of Japan’s leading schools of ninjutsu (the art of stealth). Ninjutsu developed here and Iga ninja historically played important roles as intelligence all through Japan. It was a castle town developed in the early 17th century, inhabited at that time by samurai warriors. The historic buildings and streetscapes were developed more than 100 years ago still remain. Ueno Park, which once formed the grounds of Ueno Castle, is located in the central area of the city. It is home to Iga’s most popular attraction: the Iga-ryu Ninja Museum. It is the reassembly of a ‘dogo’ residence (the house of an influential local person) that has been relocated here. Guides in ninja costumes will show you a wide range of clever tricks hidden in this residence. Ninja weapons including ninja stars and many other ninja tools such as protective gears and those for intrusion are on display. You will try your hand at throwing ninja stars under the guidance of a ninja guide, and you will attend of thrilling show of Ninja combat performed with real weapons by Ashra, the Iga ninja group. Afterwards, you will then take a private vehicle journey back to Kyoto.

IMPORTANT: The show is performed daily but irregularly some days the show will not be available.

Day 8: Kyoto - Osaka

Visit two of the most exciting non-art museums in Kyoto today. The Kyoto International Manga Museum was opened in November of 2006. It consists of three floors and a basement, and most of its walls are lined with shelves of manga. Browsing this massive collection of manga is one of the museum's main attractions. A small section of the books is dedicated to foreign and translated manga, but the vast majority is in Japanese. The museum also focuses on both the adoption and development of manga internationally. In addition to its permanent collection, the Manga Museum also features temporary exhibitions on various themes. The building, which now acts as the Manga Museum, was previously an elementary school. Some relics of the former school are on display for visitors. You will then visit nearby Railway Museum. Advanced railway technology is a source of pride for the country that invented the bullet train; you don't have to be a train fan to enjoy the huge museum, which exhibits 53 retired trains, from steam locomotives to more recent electric trains and shinkansen. Visitors can also walk underneath and observe the inner workings of a retired freight locomotive. The museum displays railway uniforms, tools and dioramas; there are also a variety of interactive exhibitions where visitors can perform the duties of a train conductor or drive a train simulator. The museum's restaurant is on the second floor directly below an observation deck. Both offer nice views of the passing trains along the JR Kyoto Line and Tokaido Shinkansen.
At the museum's exit stands the Nijo Station Building, a picturesque, old-fashioned building relocated from nearby Nijo Station in 1997. The building was originally erected in 1904, making it the oldest of its kind in Japan. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Enjoy a transfer with a private driver from Kyoto to Osaka. The transfer time is approximately 1 hour.

Osaka is one of Japan’s most vibrant cities, and especially known for its lively people - and its food. Your guide will introduce you to the splendors of Osaka’s casual cuisine, venturing into the epicenter of street food culture in Osaka: Dotonbori. Dotonbori is a famous pedestrian-only restaurant street in Osaka’s boisterous Namba district. Famous for its vast array of culinary options, Dotonbori is known as a food paradise throughout Japan. This is where Kansai people come to celebrate! Colorful eateries and bars line the neon-filled streets: hole-in-the-wall takoyaki stands and street side ramen bars rub shoulders with upscale eateries serving the finest wagyu beef – and everywhere, people – young and old – out to enjoy the culinary pleasures of the nation’s most famous restaurant district. You’ll have the chance to sample a variety of local foods, including the famous and ubiquitous takoyaki (commonly known as “octopus balls”) and kushikatsu (skewered meats and vegetables). The cost of these - and one drink a piece - is included. Your guide can also take you to a huge variety of other establishments, from ramen noodles to izakaya bars. The cost for your orders here will be on you. Afterwards, your guide will take you back to your hotel, or direct you to elsewhere nearby if you prefer to keep eating and drinking! Tour ends in Dotonbori area.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will make use of Osaka's efficient local transit system.

We had an absolutely amazing trip - every aspect of the trip exceeded our expectations. We felt well taken care of, but at the same time our guides gave us space to enjoy the trip on our own at times. We are so happy that we booked through Kensington Tours, as all of the organization and planning was done for us - thanks for a great experience!

Our multi-generational family of 8 recently returned from an amazing escorted, personalized 12-day tour of Japan. The quality was everything we expected and hoped for. Our tour planner, Anne-Laure, was fantastic and so was our Japanese guide, Mayumi. Both were attentive to our interests, professional, knowledgeable and personable. Transportation was high quality and on-time. The diversity and pace of the activities made our trip interesting and memorable. Our guide was flexible and allowed us to fine-tune our itinerary to meet our individual preferences. We felt safe and well-cared for. Japan is a pristine and polite country with a lot of history and we enjoyed it very much.

Everything about this trip was AMAZING! From start to finish, Jennifer and her team responded promptly, and suggestions that catered to my ideal Bali trip.

Our trip to Japan was awesome! We learned so much about the customs, food and spiritual life. We never had any concerns about where we needed to be or when, even with quite a few transfers.

We had a fantastic time on our Honeymoon! The level of service that Kensington provided from the time we started planning the trip to the plane ride home was second to none. I would not book a trip using any other agency!
