Day 2: Tokyo

Today, you will enjoy a half day tour of the fascinating city of Tokyo. You will make use of Tokyo's comprehensive and user-friendly public transport system, with the help of a local guide. Your day begins with a visit to the outside Imperial Palace, home of Japan’s Imperial Family. Next, you will travel to Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town where you can experience the atmosphere of old Tokyo. Subsequently, you will visit Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest temple and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. You will then take the subway across town to Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. If time permits, you can take a walk to the Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree lined avenue home to the flagship stores of the world’s top fashion brands. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that this tour includes a private guide. However, rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will explore Tokyo by making use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

The Ghibli Museum is the animation and art museum of Miyazaki Hayao's Studio Ghibli, one of Japan's most famous animation studios. They have produced many feature length films with worldwide distribution such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Located in Mitaka, just outside of central Tokyo, the museum is a must-see for fans of the films. The museum itself is whimsically designed in the distinct style of the studio's films, and many of their famous characters are there, including a life-sized robot from Castle in the Sky on the rooftop garden. The first floor of the museum exhibits the history and techniques of animation and has as a small theater which shows short movies by Studio Ghibli that are exclusive to the museum and are rotated monthly. The second floor houses special temporary exhibitions. The museum further has a café, children's play area, a rooftop garden and a gift shop. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 3: Tokyo

Anime (Japanese animation) and manga (comics) are loved throughout the world and are just as important a piece of Japanese culture as more traditional arts are. On this day tour a local guide will take you around to discover all about manga and anime. First stop is J World, an  amusement park dedicated to the heroes of the Shonen Jump stories, the best-selling magazine in Japan where popular comics such as One Piece and Naruto are serialized. Continue on to the Pokémon Centre where you will be able to find all sorts of items related to the pocket monsters. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo's efficient local transit system.

Today you will have the opportunity to explore three of Tokyo's centers of youth fashion and pop culture. You will begin in Shibuya, Tokyo's main center for youth fashion and culture. Its streets are the birthplace to many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends and are also home to the famous five-way "scramble crossing". Next, you will travel to Harajuku and Takeshita-Dori (Cat Street). This famous street is lined with fashion boutiques, cafes, and restaurants for your enjoyment. Whether you enjoy goth, punk or any other style, there is a shop in Harajuku that will cater to you. Known as Electric Town, Akihabara was originally famous for its many electronics shops. However in more recent years, Akihabara has gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture, and many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. The last stop on the tour is one of Tokyo’s famous pet cafes. Here you can enjoy a beverage and dessert and befriend a few of Tokyo’s cuddly creatures. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Please note that this tour includes a private guide. However, rather than traveling by private vehicle, you will explore Tokyo by making use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 4: Tokyo

A comprehensive immersion into Japan’s rich art and cultural heritage. Today will start with a lesson in Iaido, a form of Japanese swordsmanship. Iaido’s emphasis is on precise, controlled, fluid motion, and is sometimes referred to as ‘moving Zen’. You allowed to practice actual cutting techniques on bamboo or straw blocks forms using real Iaido swords. Time to put down the sword and take up the pen as we have a lesson in shodo, Japanese calligraphy. You will learn how, when writing kanji (Japanese pictographs), each stroke has a proper way to begin and end and there is a correct order and path to follow. The slightest lapse in concentration will show in one’s work. Last, head to Shinjuku's Samurai Museum. The Museum, located in a traditional Japanese building nicely contrasting with the neon jungle of Shinjuku, hosts an incredible collection of armours, swords and object that belonged to samurai warriors throughout the ages. Afterwards, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Please note that with this tour you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Tokyo’s efficient local transit system.

Day 6: Kyoto

Kyoto contains 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Today you will have the opportunity to explore two of them, as well as, a local market on this half day tour. Your day will begin with a visit to one of Kyoto's most famous temples, the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavillion). It was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun. However, after his death, it became a Buddhist Temple as per his request. The second site you will be visiting is the Nijo Castle, an ornamental castle surrounded by stunning gardens that were built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate as his Kyoto residence. The main building was completed in 1603 and is famous for its architecture, decorated sliding doors and ‘chirping’ nightingale floors. You will finish the day with an exciting visit to Nishiki Market, known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”. Nishiki is a narrow shopping street lined with more than 100 shops, selling fresh seafood, vegetables, pickles, Japanese sweets, and sushi. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

An assistant will pick you up and escort you to the Bike Terminal. Upon arrival, with your local guide, cycle through the Miyagawacho and Gion geisha districts, hoping to see a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) as they dash between appointments. Continue along the Shirakawa canal lined with weeping willow trees, past traditional Kyoto style tea houses. Next stop is the Imperial Palace Park with its beautiful gardens. Cycle back to Kyoto station along the Kamogawa River, whose riverbanks are popular with locals for strolling. Cherry blossoms bloom along the banks of the river in spring, and in summer restaurants open balconies looking out to the river. If you wish to continue sightseeing in Kyoto on your bike after the tour has finished, we can arrange for you to keep the bike until 19:00 at no charge. Tour ends near Kyoto Station.

Day 7: Kyoto - Osaka

Visit two of the most exciting non-art museums in Kyoto today. The Kyoto International Manga Museum was opened in November of 2006. It consists of three floors and a basement, and most of its walls are lined with shelves of manga. Browsing this massive collection of manga is one of the museum's main attractions. A small section of the books is dedicated to foreign and translated manga, but the vast majority is in Japanese. The museum also focuses on both the adoption and development of manga internationally. In addition to its permanent collection, the Manga Museum also features temporary exhibitions on various themes. The building, which now acts as the Manga Museum, was previously an elementary school. Some relics of the former school are on display for visitors. You will then visit nearby Railway Museum. Advanced railway technology is a source of pride for the country that invented the bullet train; you don't have to be a train fan to enjoy the huge museum, which exhibits 53 retired trains, from steam locomotives to more recent electric trains and shinkansen. Visitors can also walk underneath and observe the inner workings of a retired freight locomotive. The museum displays railway uniforms, tools and dioramas; there are also a variety of interactive exhibitions where visitors can perform the duties of a train conductor or drive a train simulator. The museum's restaurant is on the second floor directly below an observation deck. Both offer nice views of the passing trains along the JR Kyoto Line and Tokaido Shinkansen.
At the museum's exit stands the Nijo Station Building, a picturesque, old-fashioned building relocated from nearby Nijo Station in 1997. The building was originally erected in 1904, making it the oldest of its kind in Japan. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

The Granvia Kyoto is located directly above the Japan Rail train station, and so departing by train is easily done independently. Simply make your way by foot to the appropriate platform as listed on your train tickets. No assistance is required, or included.

Transfer by train from Kyoto to Osaka. The train ride is approximately 15 minutes.

Meet your guide for a train station transfer with a private vehicle.

Osaka is one of Japan’s most vibrant cities, and especially known for its lively people - and its food. Your guide will introduce you to the splendors of Osaka’s casual cuisine, venturing into the epicenter of street food culture in Osaka: Dotonbori. Dotonbori is a famous pedestrian-only restaurant street in Osaka’s boisterous Namba district. Famous for its vast array of culinary options, Dotonbori is known as a food paradise throughout Japan. This is where Kansai people come to celebrate! Colorful eateries and bars line the neon-filled streets: hole-in-the-wall takoyaki stands and street side ramen bars rub shoulders with upscale eateries serving the finest wagyu beef – and everywhere, people – young and old – out to enjoy the culinary pleasures of the nation’s most famous restaurant district. You’ll have the chance to sample a variety of local foods, including the famous and ubiquitous takoyaki (commonly known as “octopus balls”) and kushikatsu (skewered meats and vegetables). The cost of these - and one drink a piece - is included. Your guide can also take you to a huge variety of other establishments, from ramen noodles to izakaya bars. The cost for your orders here will be on you. Afterwards your guide will take you back to your hotel, or direct you to elsewhere nearby if you prefer to keep eating and drinking!

Accommodation: New Otani Osaka (4*)

The New Otani Hotel Osaka is located in a business district, just across the river and offering stunning views of Osaka Castle. It is within a short subway ride to the city centre as well as main shopping and entertainment districts. Day 8: Osaka

Your guide will meet you at your hotel to take you on a tour of Osaka by public transportation. Start your day visiting the magnificent Osaka Castle. The castle is one of Japan's most famous, and played a major role in the unification of Japan during the sixteenth century. It has been completely rebuilt, faithful to the original appearance, after its destruction during World War II; the inside is modern and functional and serves as a museum of Osaka history. Next stop is the hustling district of Dotonbori, a former pleasure district turned restaurant mecca. You can sample the famous takoyaki, octopus dumpling, Osaka’s most famous street food. A few minutes’ walk away you’ll find the Kamigata Ukiyoe museum, to admire the famed Japanese prints from the 18th century. You’ll have the chance to make your own woodblock print, too! Hop on the underground for today’s last stop: the Floating Garden Observatory. Built on top of the highest building in Osaka, it’s an open air observatory from which you can enjoy stunning views of the city and the bay.

Please note that with this tour, you will have a private guide, but rather than travelling by private vehicle, you will make use of Osaka's efficient local transit system.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality.
