Colonial architecture, glittering pagodas, fascinating landscapes, and more await in Myanmar, Asia’s slumbering giant. This tour takes luxury-minded travelers behind-the-scenes for a glimpse of modern life inside a country that maintains strong ties to its past.

It all starts in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the former capital of independent Burma, with a privately guided architecture tour. As Myanmar opens itself up to the outside world, many of the city’s colonial buildings are being restored and reimagined as cafés, art galleries, and museums. After the tour, you’ll pause for cocktails at Gekko, a stylish new restaurant in a restored historical building. Later, a morning on your own leads to a fascinating encounter with Ma Thanegi, Aung San Suu Kyi’s former secretary who turned a three-year prison sentence into a bestselling book. Later, visit the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda on a nighttime visit and participate in the lighting of 1,000 oil lanterns en route to a chef’s-table dinner at SEEDS, a restaurant founded by Swiss Michelin-star chef Felix Eppisser and his wife, Lucia.

Next stop: Bagan, Myanmar’s archaeological hotspot. Up here, you’ll head out to explore the temples and pagodas of the Bagan Archaeological Zone in the company of a private guide and driver. After a late lunch, hop aboard a horse cart for a tour of the resplendent Pyathagyi Paya and sunset cocktails from a sandbank in the middle of the Irrawaddy River.

Adventure further afield awaits, but first, bid a proper farewell to Bagan in the most magical way possible: a hot-air balloon ride over the ruins. After returning to terra firma and taking a short flight east, get introduced to the vast and scenic Inle Lake region via a private tour of In Dein’s ruins, a traditional meal served in a local’s home, and self-paddled canoe (or motorboat) exploration of the fascinating floating gardens. Later, visit isolated villages and watch villagers fish via leg-rowing boats on a full-day cruise around the lake aboard a rice-carrier boat before visiting a cheroot factory and perusing the wares of a local market before returning to Yangon and home.

Day 2: Yangon

This morning, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Myanmar has undergone cycles of rapidly changing political climate over the last few decades, and the cultural players in this identity shift have a lot of insight about the politics, uprising, and of course the local food traditions. Join your private guide at your hotel for a memorable conversation over tea or coffee with Ma Thanegi, a published Burmese writer, food lover, and former secretary of Aung San Suu Kyi. The foremost authority on Myanmar cuisine and the political regime changes, Ma Thanegi was even a guest on Anthony Bourdain's Myanmar episode of "Parts Unknown". The author played an insightful role in the events of Myanmar's politically charged history and was closely associated with the opposition movement during the uprising of 1988. She was born in Myanmar and educated at the Methodist English High School, and spent 3 years in the Insein Jail, the inspiration for her book "Nor Iron Bars a Cage". Ma Thanegi is a colorful character to spend time with and worked as a painter from 1967 until 1998, including 7 solo exhibitions of her work. Myanmar's diverse cuisine is one of her favorite topics to chat about with guests.

The Shwedagon pagoda glistens gold over Yangon's skyline, and the evening it is a particularly magical time to visit the illuminated pagoda. With your private guide and driver, visit the Shwedagon at dusk, where the waning daylight offers a truly breathtaking experience. At this time of day, the main platform is not very busy and the mystical essence of the pagoda truly comes to life. Learn about the history of the pagoda and gain deeper insights into Myanmar's Buddhist beliefs, and how the spiritual belief is heavily intermingled with the belief in nats - Myanmar spirits.

Participate in the moving Mee Htun Bwe ceremony, a special ceremony of offerings to Buddha in the hopes of receiving wisdom and enlightenment. During the ceremony, you will assist in lighting 1000 oil lamps on the platform surrounding the Shwedagon pagoda.

Seeds restaurant is the brainchild of Swiss Star Chef Felix Eppisser and his wife Lucia, who were awarded a Michelin Star at their former restaurant in Switzerland. Within the private frame of their light bamboo and glass crafted lake house with direct access to Inya Lake Yangon and a lush, green, tropical garden they offer space to breathe, unwind and enjoy an extraordinary culinary experience combined with personalized hospitality.

Dine on a delectable chef's table menu, with a curated selection of regionally inspired dishes and twists on modern European fine dining. Seeds Restaurant is actively involved in the local Yangon community, helping to enable a young and ambitious generation of local Myanmar people to develop their skills and
to be a part of a never-ending process of creation.

Fly from Yangon to Bagan. Flight time is approximately 1.5 hours.

Meet your driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle and English speaking guide.

A full day tour by car, with an experienced guide through Bagan will show you the best known temples of the area. We start the day climbing a pagoda to get a first impressive view over the whole area. From here the guide plans his way to some of the other amazing temples that have been here for hundreds of years. Places like the Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani, and Thatbyinnyu will certainly impress you. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant and around 4:00 PM continue the tour by horse cart to Pyathagyi pagoda for sunset with some refreshing drinks served! Oh… we forgot to mention the best part of this tour; whenever you see a temple you like, just ask your guide to stop to have a look at it – simply pick your own favorite temple.

Start the evening with a boat ride on the mighty Irrawaddy River with wine and canapés on a sandbank in the middle of the river (if the river is not too high). A private boat tour on the river will hopefully show you a spectacular sunset while your guide is serving wine and snacks.

Day 4: Bagan - Inle Lake

One of the many highlights when visiting Myanmar is taking a hot air balloon ride. In the early morning, before sunrise, you will be picked up at your hotel and driven to the launch site for a spectacular hot air balloon ride over the temple zone in Bagan. The mostly British balloon pilots are operating each balloon under the highest UK safety standards and the views you will get are breathtakingly spectacular. Enjoy a premium balloon ride in a smaller balloon that accommodates a maximum of 8 guests, for a more intimate flight over the pagodas. After floating in the air and following the wind you will land safely and be welcomed back on the ground by a smiling crew serving cold champagne before taking you back to your hotel.

Fly from Bagan to Inle Lake. Flight time is approximately 40 minutes.

Meet your driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle and English speaking guide.

In the south of the lake the ruins of Indein are certainly worth a visit. Partly covered by vegetation the area looks like a “pagoda forest”. You will walk about 1 hour to enjoy a fantastic view over the lake. A home-made cooked lunch is served in a local house. Afterwards, continue towards the Nam Pan village for a very interesting trip going local with a small canoe. Whenever you are tired paddling yourself you will continue by motorboat back to your hotel.

Accommodation: Villa Inle Resort (4*)

On and around the lake traditional markets are held in different villages according to a 5-day rotating schedule and today your guide will take you to visit a colourful market frequented by Shan and PaO people living nearby. You will certainly also visit a local cheroot factory (where the Burmese cigars are made), floating tomato gardens, Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, an Intha house where a traditional Intha lunch is served and if wanted you will be able visit a weaving factory. Lunch is served on a rice carrier boat in the middle of Inle Lake. The boat has been transformed into an ephemeral restaurant fully equipped. Early this morning, your private guide will meet you at your hotel to join you at the colorful five-day market. The market migrates from one rustic lakeside village to another, on a constant five-day rotation system. Shan and PaO villagers converge on the market to sell their wares and produce, and there are memorable souvenirs available as well. The morning market is a lively floating market unlike other ones in Southeast Asia as it changes villages on a daily basis.
