Day 2: Singapore

Singapore was once part of British Malaysia for many centuries. It was ruled by the Sultanate of Johor before the British came to the island and set up a port and colony in 1819. After World War II, Singapore became an independent nation and republic. Today Singapore has a diverse population of nearly 5 million people or more which is made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Caucasians, Eurasians, and Asians of different origins. Experience the various cultures come alive before your very eyes as you explore each ethnic heritage enclave by turns. At Kampong Glam, admire the quiet majesty of the Sultan’s Mosque with its unmistakable golden dome, explore colorful food eateries, and browse through old-fashioned shops selling batiks, carpets, rattan basket-ware, and exotic perfumes. Travel to the heart of Chinatown and experience the old and the new tradition and modernity in the rows of streets, and traditional shop houses lovingly restored into tempting eateries, teahouses and shops selling Oriental arts, crafts, and souvenirs as well as traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Little India completes the cultural kaleidoscope with its bustling streets showcasing aromatic and exotic spices, colorful flower-garland shops, vegetable vendors, and busy curry houses.

A labyrinth of promenades and boulevards, Chinatown is one of Singapore’s best districts to take in remarkable architecture, peruse handicrafts, and to sample some of the island-state’s best cuisine. Unlike the rest of sky-high Singapore, the shops of Chinatown are not nearly as tall, instead, they are – by and large – representative of the early Peranakan settlers who initially developed this stretch of the city. Two of the most popular hotspots in the district include the aptly named Food Street, though nearby Club Street should not be missed, especially for those who enjoy trendy wine bars.

Day 3: Singapore

Exploring key city highlights, this excursion brings you the best of Singapore with a “Crazy, Rich” twist. It all begins at one of the top places to visit in Asia, Gardens by the Bay, a sprawling park built at a cost of over one billion dollars. Opened June 2012, this “can’t-miss” attraction features two domes or conservatories, the Cloud Forest and the Flower Dome, which are climate-controlled indoor glasshouses. The Flower Dome (the larger of the two) replicates the cool-dry climate of the Mediterranean and South Africa, whilst the Cloud Forest replicates a cool-moist climate found in Tropical Montane regions such as Mount Kinabalu in Sabah and high elevation areas in South America. Within the gardens, there are 18 impressive-looking Supertrees; incredible vertical gardens up to 164-feet (50 meters) tall and perform a multitude of functions. Along with providing a bird’s eye view of the entire gardens, they also collect rainwater, generate solar power and act as vending ducts for the park’s conservatory. Moving on, you’ll head to the newest attraction in Singapore, the iconic Marina Bay Sands SkyPark®. Crowning the three hotel towers of Marina Bay Sands some 656-feet (200-meters) in the sky, the Sands SkyPark® stretches longer than the Eiffel Tower if laid flat. The Sands SkyPark® is also home to the world’s largest public cantilever housing a public observatory deck, lush gardens, and a mesmerizing 492-foot (150-meter) infinity swimming pool. Next, head over to Newton Food Center, a Victorian wrought-iron structure. With close to 100 stalls, it’s no wonder this food centre got chosen to be featured in Crazy Rich Asians. Food gurus strongly recommends Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette, Kwee Heng Duck Noodle, Kwang Kee Teochew Fish Porridge, Bee Heng Popiah, Soon Wah Fishball Kway Teow Mee (for fishball noodles) and Chong Pang Huat, for barbecued chicken wings. After lunch, take a stroll around the vicinity of Chijmes, a colonial-era compound (strangely spelt due to Singaporeans’ love of acronyms, but pronounced Chimes) was variously a convent and a school (the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School. Constructed in 1840–1841, The Caldwell House, currently a wedding venue, and the Gothicstyle chapel, renamed as CHIJMES Hall, currently a function hall, have both been gazetted as national monuments. After visiting these sites, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 9: Singapore - Denpasar (Bali) - Ubud (Bali)

Meet your English speaking guide and driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle.

Fly from Singapore to Denpasar (Bali), Indonesia. Flight time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Upon arrival to Denpasar Airport, your guide will lead you to the Fast-Track service area, where an airport representative will assist you through Immigration and Customs. After meeting your guide and round of introductions, settle into your private vehicle and relax as you are transferred to your accommodations. Upon arrival, your guide will assist with check-in and along the way, answer any questions you may have.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Sayan

Discover Bali’s cultural heart in the island’s central highlands, minutes from the artistic capital of Ubud. Hidden in a lush paradise beside the Ayung River, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan has been recognized as one of the world’s best resorts on the Conde Nast Traveler, Gold List 2014 and Conde Nast Traveler, Platinum Circle 2014. Arriving at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is a breathtaking, unique-in-the-world experience. Relax in ultra-private accommodations – with just 60 suites and villas. Dine on authentic local cuisine. Pamper yourself with Balinese Ayurveda-inspired spa treatments. And discover the exciting range of culture- and nature-oriented activities destined to thrill both couples and families.

Day 10: Ubud (Bali)

Invited to meet two charming locals, Dewa and Jero, today you’ll embark on a food-themed cultural journey. Parents to an extensive family of biological and neighborhood children in the village of Keliki – an artist town nestled in the terraced foothills just north of Ubud – Dewa works as a tour guide and is passionate about sharing the culture of Bali, and in particular, the unique local perspectives on how belief promotes a lifestyle of balance in body and spirit. He lives with his family in a traditional Balinese compound consisting of several open or semi-open pavilions positioned around a central courtyard. He and his wife serve delicious Balinese food to promote good health and spiritual well-being. Almost half the ingredients that are used in virtually every main dish, such as turmeric and galangal root, serve a medicinal purpose, in addition to providing sustenance. Light curries are cooked alongside spiced tuna and chicken morsels that are wrapped in banana leaves and grilled or steamed to tender perfection. These dishes are served with rice and vegetables mixed with grated coconut. Your experience will start with a walk around Dewa's family compound where Dewa will give you an insight into the Balinese culture and how they live. You will then join his wife and extended family in the kitchen and help them to cook a range of Balinese dishes, using local ingredients and spices, over a traditional wood fired oven. The family will explain local philosophies about food sharing as you pound, grind and chop ingredients. Finish your hands-on experience with a delicious meal served at a dining area set up around a traditional wood-burning stove adjacent to the family temple. Dewa will share stories as you cook together with his family, however, Dewa and his family will not share the meal with you at the dining table. Balinese tradition holds that a family should not eat together; the idea being that when one sits down to eat they are likely very hungry after a long day’s work and consequently have negative energy. To have a discussion with family in such a state will share and spread negative energy and when eating, it will be internalized. The preferred approach is to grab food and eat alone, in personal meditation, getting into a positive state of mind. After the dinner, when everyone is full and satisfied – filled with positive energy – it is common for the family to get together and spend time together chatting. While Dewa and his family may not eat dinner with you, they will be with you at the dining table for the dessert.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Sayan

Day 11: Ubud (Bali)

On this full day exploration of Ubud, you’re invited to discover a range of striking and revered sites in the region. Goa Gajah Temple, also known as the Elephant Cave, will be your first stop of the day. Built in the 9th century, it features bathing pools and fountains and has been used as a meditation center since the 11th Century. Afterwards, continue to the archaeological site of Gunung Kawi. Legend has it that the giant Kebo Iwa carved the immense shrines on the caves using just his fingernails. What we know for sure is that this is one of the oldest temples in Bali, possibly dating from the 11th century. It is unlike anything else on the island, retaining a unique aura about it. If you choose to go down, please ensure you have enough energy to climb up again! Continuing the adventure, you’ll visit Tirta Empul, a water temple where locals go to take purifying baths on the waters that rush down from the river. The special water (or Tirta in Balinese) is believed to have healing properties. If you want to partake on the purification ritual bring a bathing suit and a sarong as well. Afterward, drive up to Penelokan near Kintamani and enjoy the stunning views of Mount Batur and its crater lake. The day would not be complete without a visit to the Tegalalang rice terraces, arguably one of the most picturesque landscapes in all of Bali, these beautiful and exquisite rice fields are precisely situated on the hill bank. Take in the gorgeous panoramic views, then relax as you are returned to your hotel.

  • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!
