Tucked away at the foot of the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka is often overlooked by travelers drawn to the bustle of the mainland. They don’t know what they’re missing; dazzling beaches, serene Buddhist sanctuaries, exotic wildlife and more await the curious explorer who knows where to look. Come along on this Explorers Club journey and uncover the wonders of this hidden island gem.

Unspoiled nature is one of Sri Lanka’s hallmarks, as you’ll discover in Anamaduwa at the Mud House, an exclusive eco-lodge built in the shadow of a mountaintop Buddhist temple. Surrounded by lakes and dense forest teeming with birdlife, it’s the perfect introduction to a country that seamlessly blends the organic with the designed.

Later, climb the massive stone staircase to the top of a 300-foot-boulder to visit Yapahuwa, a 13th-century granite citadel built to guard holy relics, pause for reflection beneath a sacred fig tree that once shaded Buddha himself, and possibly cross paths with a procession of silent monks near the Kaludiya Pokuna archaeological site. The next day, explore the stunning rock fortress of Sigiriya, home to a fifth-century palace perched atop a 660-foot-tall rock column, and wander the nearby ruins of Ritigala, a former monastery hidden deep in the jungle crisscrossed by winding paths. Venture into the forest that night in search of the elusive loris on an optional nature walk (complete with infrared headlamps). ... Show More »

From there, it’s north toward Jaffna by train across the barren landscapes of Vavuniya to a delicious home-cooked lunch in this gorgeous seaside city taking in the sights via a privately guided cycling tour. This historic port is quickly emerging as a must-visit destination for travelers, and you’ll quickly discover why as you take a guided tour of the Nallur temple, stroll across Casuarina Beach’s white sands, and later visit Neduntheevu (Delft Island), home to abandoned Dutch forts and herds of wild horses.

The next stop is Matale and a chance to slow things down a little. Your home and sanctuary is Jim’s Farm, a traditional Sri Lankan villa where you’ll learn about the cultivation of crops like coconuts, mangoes, and bananas in between bouts of relaxation beneath the farm’s shady palms.

Rich with natural and historical treasures, Sri Lanka is a small island home to huge adventures. South Asia’s best-kept secret won’t stay hush-hush for long. Explore it before word gets around.

The various lakes are often hotspots for a colorful specimens of birds, but it can be just exciting trying to catch a quick glimpse of other wildlife hiding in the forest cover. Many birds can be spotted in and around the huts and the Mud House has quality binoculars in each hut and many specialist bird books for you to identify all your sightings. Day 3: Anamaduwa - Sigiriya

Transfer from Anamaduwa to Sigiriya with a private vehicle and English-speaking chauffeur guide. The transfer is approximately 4.5 hours.

Today you and your English-speaking chauffeur guide will leave the hotel before dawn, because you want to reach Yapahuwa to see the sunrise. Yapahuwa Rock, is a 300-foot isolated fortified wonder dating back to the 13th century. It was the place where King Buvanekabahu decided to build a city to protect the most holy of holies, the Tooth Relic. Start climbing the legendary stairs and on the way be greeted by silent stone lions, guardians of the relic that was often taken and then recovered in ancient battles. At the top, in complete silence and solitude, it is easy to understand why this rock was chosen. If you make the effort to get there at the break of dawn and watch the sunrise from the top of the hill, chances are that you are going to be alone with just the wind and some ancient stupas as companions.

Later, you will explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Anuradhapura, the city of Kings, led by your English-speaking chauffeur guide. Not many places in the world can claim to have been continuously inhabited for over two millennia. Even to this day, the city of Anuradhapura is a sacred pilgrimage site. You will have the chance to see the sacred fig tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), said to have a branch, grown from the original Sri Maha Bodhi in India, from which the Buddha gained enlightenment. During your stay, you will also visit other city highlights including dagobas (Buddhist stupas) that stand as majestic as they did during the reign of the original Kings. Entrance fees are included.

With your English-speaking chauffeur guide, you can then discover the hidden archeological site of Kaludiya Pokuna, where you might encounter monks that have taken a vow of silence and have, therefore, minimal interaction with people. Take time to explore at leisure and sit on one of the rocks. You will not get enlightened in 20 minutes but take a deep breath and soak in the beauty of your surroundings, it is one of those memorable places that will stick in your memory.

Day 4: Sigiriya

Today is another early start. To truly appreciate one of Sri Lanka's jewels you want to reach Sigiriya no later than 7.00 a.m. This will help you to avoid the large crowds coming in tourist buses. Sigiriya, known as Lion Rock, is a spectacular rock fortress site. Created by King Kashyapa, his mission was to build a fortress so grand, that it would have to be reached by 1200 steps, offering a panoramic bird's eye view of the leafy emerald meadows and villages beneath. What is left of the ruins on top, that can be seen today, is less than 20% of the structures that once graced the area. Yet, it is still one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in the world. Your Sigiriya discovery takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the pace by which you wish to ascent. Climbing to the top is strenuous, but not hard. Your reward is an unforgettable experience and stunning views from the top. The Lion Staircase and the Mirror Wall are two additional highlights that might amaze you, so take your time. Entrance fees are included.

32 miles away, Ritigala is home to 70 rock caves that are believed to have been inhabited since the first century BC. They eventually became a monastic retreat for hermit monks with a monastery founded by King Lanji Tissa (119-109 BC). What you discover today are the ruins of that very monastery, surrounded by the mysterious natural ambience of Ritigala. Your English-speaking chauffeur guide will be with you at all times on this journey of discovery.  During your walk, you come across a huge man-made reservoir, following meandering, large stone-lined pathways, down to a ravine, a river with a stone bridge and then back following a turn that opens into the thick jungle until you reach the sacred grounds that lead you to the ancient Buddhist monastery. Take time to sit down and connect with nature as you appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the site. You will have time to explore and walk all the way to the higher locations of the mountain, perhaps sensing the positive spiritual energy. Entrance fees are included.

Optional / Not Included

Beginning at 7.00 p.m. the one hour long tour, from the hotel, which is conducted by the resident naturalist, will take you through a forest filled with a wide range of vegetation. Preserving the natural appearance of the forest, the trail passes over streams which are crossed by simple bamboo bridges. You will be provided with red light emitting headlamps which prevent damage to the eyes of the Loris but assist you in your search for this elusive creature. When the light comes in contact with the eyes of a Loris, it gives a bright red reflection of a pair of enormous eyes. Depending on how quiet you are, the Loris may even approach you and give you a close up view. Keep an eye out for the other nocturnal species you may encounter on the night trail – the Eurasian Otter, Mouse Deer, Palm Civet, Collared Scops Owl, Indian Nightjar and Fishing Cat.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes and don’t forget to carry your camera and insect repellent. On your return to the hotel you will be provided with a refreshing fresh fruit juice at the reception.

Day 5: Sigiriya - Anuradhapura - Jaffna

Transfer from Sigiriya to Anuradhapura with a private vehicle and English-speaking chauffeur guide. The transfer is approximately 2 hours.

Today you will embark on a train journey to the north of the island. Your English-speaking chauffeur guide will transfer you to the train station and assist you with boarding the train to Jaffna. Upon your arrival in Jaffna, the same chauffeur guide will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel. Total journey time is approximately 4 hours.

Please note that your chauffeur guide will not be traveling with you on the train. He will however, pick you up at Jaffna station.

The Queen of Jaffna Express Train has only resumed its services in 2016. Jaffna and the North of Sri Lanka were cut off from the rest of the country and the world for a long 30 years. Now, the veil is finally opening and Jaffna is eagerly waiting to welcome travelers again.

You will board the train for a three hour ride that will take you across the barren landscape of the Vavuniya. Controlled by the Tamil Tigers, this area suffered from attacks from both the Sinhalese forces as well as the Tamils, leaving thousands of people displaced. Looking out of the window at the dry landscape dotted with the occasional village is a somber reminder of the effects of war.

Lunch will be arranged at a traditional Jaffna home, with an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the life style of an ordinary family. Your local Tamil guide will be there to assist, translate and provide details. At the beginning a special “kool” (or traditional soup) will be served. Ingredients are palmyrah root flour, water, crabs, prawns, cuttlefish, fish, dry fish, long bean, ash plant, eggplant, gram, dry chilly, saffron, pepper, garlic, tamarind, coconut scraps, drumstick leaves.

A little exercise works best after a big meal, and since most locals move around Jaffna in bicycles, you have a chance to do the same! The bicycle ride will cover most of the Jaffna city including the fort, library, Supramaniyam Park, coastal villages, the biggest church in Jaffna, a Buddhist dagopa and the statue of the last king of Jaffna. After a busy day, it will be time to head back to the hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

Accommodation: Jetwing Jaffna (4*)

Located on 40 perches of land in the heart of the town, the stunning seven storey building offers a panoramic view of Jaffna and its surroundings. Jetwing Jaffna offers 55 luxuriously comfortable, deluxe bedrooms. Elegantly furnished in a contemporary style, the rooms are large and airy, with magnificent views of the town. Day 6: Jaffna

Start the morning with a visit to the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, where you will be provided with a traditional “Shalve”/”Veddi” to wear when you enter the temple. The history and importance of the temple will be explained and the basic principles of worshipping at a Hindu Temple will be demonstrated. If you are interested to learn the way of reaching enlightenment “Hatha Yoga” basics can be explained while travelling - you probably won't attain enlightenment in half an hour but is worth a shot. You will delve into Jaffna’s culture, similarities and differences of South Indian culture, the scars of war, and the effects migration and exile have had in the region.

This afternoon, explore the Karainagar and Casuarina beach. Highlights include Kayt’s jetty, Hanuman Temple, Kantharodai Buddhist miniature pagodas, Keerimalai pond and Nageswaran temple. Lunch will be provided at a village home with fried cuttlefish, Jaffna prawn curry, toasted crab, fish masala, mashed brinjal, drumstick curry, fish gravy, etc. Meals will be served on banana leaf like a traditional Jaffna style lunch. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax and idle and the quiet Casuarina beach. If in season, try the fruit of the Palmyra tree is like nothing you ever had before a combination of coconut and jelly.

Day 7: Jaffna

This morning, your English-speaking chauffer guide will take you to the jetty to board a local ferry to Delft Island. During the one-hour boat trip your Tamil guide will talk about the different Jaffna Islands, the life style, war time memories and Hindu lore. Upon arrival, a special vehicle will be waiting to show you the wild horses, the huge baobab tree, the Dutch fort, coral fences and more. Think of Delft as a small island, lined with small walls made of coral, no cars, the ruins of a Fort and feral horses left by the Portuguese over 400 years ago.

A special lunch will be arranged at a local home in Delft to taste the sea-food once again and get the real touch of a remote isolated island family. In the late afternoon head back in the boat to Jaffna.

Fresh, fiery and delicious, island cuisine is one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets. Many visitors expect to experience an extension of Indian cooking, when in fact Sri Lankan cuisine is very distinct. Although curries are the island’s mainstay and concocted from freshly ground spices, a liberal use of coconut milk and spice pastes to make curries actually makes it quite similar to Thai cuisine.

Why not learn more about Sri Lanka’s famed ‘Rice and Curry’ and join one of the curry classes. The range of Sri Lankan curry’s served amongst The Wallawwa are a direct result of the various influences on the team over their lives and experiences in Sri Lanka. Ranging from classic Sri Lankan to Malay and Middle Eastern inspired. Learn how to prepare your own in one of the one on one cooking classes.

  • Bonnie Carroll — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

The trip was FABULOUS! We are now loyal Kensington converts - you took care of everything, and each day unfolded with new surprises and adventures! They were made aware (by Kensington??) that it was our shared birthday trip (my 60th!) and so each Oberoi really outdid themselves in doing special birthday celebrations! Wow, amazing! Just overwhelming!

  • Pamela L — August 22, 2017 — India & Area

Everything was great, when we wanted to change something they were very good at doing so. I was more than satisfied. Thanks for a wonderful trip.

  • Bruce Rubin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

I loved working with Kenny and all the people at Kensington Tours. I loved how easily everything flowed during our journey. Your people were mostly wonderful with a few who simply showed up. We had a few hotel rooms that were less than perfect but in the case of Varanasi I mentioned my displeasure and the room was immediately changed. Many of the hotels were as luxurious as promised and the service was impeccable. We truly loved our trip and would happily use your services again and recommend them to our friends.

  • Renee Martin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

Really great experience! The quality and the individuality of how our tour was designed was perfect! Would definitely like to do another tour with Kensington!

Guides and especially drivers were very good, indeed.

Each of my guides was absolutely wonderful, making a whirlwind tour feel well-paced and meaningful as well as providing interesting historical/cultural insights and offering excellent shopping and restaurant recommendations. In particular, Sanjil made sure I got all of the best photo angles of the Taj Mahal. Vivek was an amazing story-teller who went above and beyond to make Udaipur come alive, and Indrajeet was an excellent teacher of India's many religions and cultural traditions. The Oberoi hotels were unbelievable; I have never stayed in more luxurious accommodations or experienced more attentive service! This tour was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Mahipal, our driver for 10 days, was absolutely excellent. My wife has had 3 previous neck surgeries, and cannot ride in a bumpy vehicle. Mahipal was careful to make our travel as smooth as humanly possible. Thank you! Sunita Singh was excellent in arranging everything we needed, as well as our driver.

The choice of hotels and the guides selected for each city were very knowledgeable. We especially liked Rotan in Jodhpur, Gowinda in Jaipur, Iqbal in Agra and Mr Satya Gupta in Deli. They were all very patient, humorous, and happened to be willing photographers. They even made restaurant suggestions for local places outside the hotel. Great versatility. Our driver, Mr. Ronnert Singh, navigated those tough Indian roads safely and flawlessly. We've taken a few tours but quite frankly Kensington was one of the best.

The pacing was well thought out. It's about as easy as you will ever do, i think, touring for a month in India. The Oberoi Hotels were uniformly excellent.

Just arrived back from a spectacular 13-day visit to Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. Sunita Singh of Kensington put together a perfect itinerary to give us a taste of Indian sights, sounds, people and culture and the hotel bookings exceeded our expectations. Everywhere we went we were met by the local Kensington representatives, who more than handled any request we came up with. We felt well cared for throughout the trip. The local guides selected by the local Kensington representatives were knowledgeable about their home city and they were very flexible and accommodating in seeking to make the trip special. Since we were driven in a private van from Udaipur to Jodhpur to Jaipur to Agra and back to Delhi, we could not have been in better hands. Our driver was spectacular. The trip was a success and we could not be happier. Thank you Kensington for a very special trip.
