Thailand, Southeast Asia’s tropical kingdom of endless smiles, is divided into 76 provinces and three distinct states of mind. The first: “bustling,” epitomized by always-buzzing Bangkok, the vibrant southern capital seemingly held together by its steamy food carts, dazzling street life, and bewildering contrasts. The second: “stately,” embodied by Chiang Mai, the northern capital, where ancient temples and quiet monasteries dot the skyline and the all-enveloping rainforest is just a short drive away. The third: “serene,” best appreciated while stretched out on the white sands of Koh Samui's idyllic beaches. Thailand’s diversity of moods is precisely what holds it all together. Come make yourself whole.

There’s no better introduction to Thailand than Bangkok. Here, you’ll spend a full day exploring the busy capital’s sights, from an early-morning visit to Wat Suthat to beat the crowds to a longtail boat ride through the city’s vast network of canal-like khlongs. Later, explore the night markets and elephant hospital in Chiang Mai. Rounding out the experience, fly to Koh Samui Island and explore the impossibly beautiful Angthong Marine Park by private speedboat before devoting a full day to exploring on your own or doing as little as possible on the beach. Fast, slow, or paused, Thailand moves at the same speed you do.

Day 2: Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden-topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. From here, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) allows you a glimpse into small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Your next stop takes you to the most revered shrine in the Kingdom, Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as well as the splendor of the adjacent Grand Palace. For your last stop, we cross the Chao Phraya River by water-taxi to visit Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, Wat Arun’s iconic stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires that look as if to stand guard over the river. Afterwords, enjoy a leisurely lunch at Savoey Restaurant. After lunch your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.

During your time at leisure in Bangkok, feel free to explore this sprawling capital or to enjoy some down-time at your hotel. If you choose to sightsee, consider visiting Khaosan Road, a bustling street with excellent shopping and dining options. For guest with an interest in local history, consider heading to the riverside temple Wat Arun Ratchawararam, constructed in the late 18th century. Should you be visiting during a weekend, you may wish to visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market, the largest market in Thailand, where over 15,000 stalls lined with all sorts of goods can be perused at your own pace.

Lively markets are synonymous with Chiang Mai – as afternoon markets of fruits, vegetables and fresh meat options wind down for the day, night markets spring to life, enticing Thais and travelers alike with freshly grilled skewers, fragrant Thai curries, deceptively spicy peppers, and colorful local salads. Northern Thailand’s culinary traditions are unique from Bangkok’s options, earning Chiang Mai the international distinction of being a “foodie city” – with mouthwatering options available from neighboring Laos and Myanmar contributing to its identity. Venture into the vibrant markets of Somphret and Warorot with your private guide to start exploring this delicious food scene. Continue to smaller, lesser known markets bustling with locals looking for the perfect evening snack (opening days may vary depending on seasons). Your guide will help you taste local snacks that will appeal to a range of palates as you stroll through the city’s main night market. Have your camera ready to capture the dizzying array vendors have on display, especially at the lively flower markets. For dinner, opt to dine at one of the busy stalls (ask your guide to recommend their favorite!) or return to your hotel. While appetizers are included during the market walk, dinner is not included.

Accommodation: Tamarind Village

Relax in a tranquil boutique hotel setting in the center of Chiang Mai’s old city, with the comfort of a magnificent 200-year-old tamarind tree sheltering the property at the Tamarind Village. The 46 rooms and suites are designed to reflect the rich ethnic diversity of northern Thailand, drawing on fabrics and patterns from the various tribes that populate the region. Featuring award-winning elements of design, service and comfort in a serene and stylish setting, the hotel prides itself on genuine hospitality with attention to detail throughout. The property is set around a series of garden courtyards amidst the ancient temples and quaint shopping streets that define Chiang Mai. Intimate, serene and relaxing, Tamarind Village is an oasis of calm and tranquility, the perfect base for exploring Chiang Mai and beyond and ideal for guests who enjoy discovering their surroundings in the evening on foot.

Day 4: Chiang Mai

Head out to the countryside around Chiang Mai with your private English-speaking guide to discover the temples of Lampang and Lamphun, as well as a moving visit to the FAE Elephant Hospital, the world’s first elephant hospital, founded in 1993. The elephants here are long-term patients recovering from injuries sustained in the logging trade or in the wild, and the rehabilitative care they receive here is unique to the region. Continue to Lampang, stopping to browse for the famous Lampang ceramics and a snack at the Kaad Thung Kwain Market. Discover the magnificent Lanna architecture of Temple Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a unique place in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages are still used as public transportation at the temple.  Enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant, and continue to Lamphun to visit the dazzling temple complex of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, a temple that is considered an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, especially for those born in the Year of the Rooster. If time permits on the way back to city, a stop can be made at Baan Tawai, a village on the outskirts of Chiang Mai that has gained a reputation as the best place to shop for handicrafts, particularly wood carvings.

Day 5: Chiang Mai

The largest city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai was founded in 1296, and is found on the banks of the Ping River. While enjoying some free time in this ancient capital, consider immersing yourself in local culture with a visit to the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center, the Chiang Mai National Museum, or the fascinating Tribal Museum which provides insights into the culture of indigenous mountain communities. Known for excellent cuisine served on a traditional dish known as Khan tok, be sure to pop into a local diner for a tasty meal. Active adventures may wish to visit nearby Doi Inthanon National Park, host to the tallest mountain in Thailand, while guests seeking a more relaxed experience may instead prefer to visit one of the many massage parlors that specialize in face, foot and back massages.

  • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

  • Ann L — June 05, 2019 — Asia

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

  • Sandra S — February 09, 2019 — Asia

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.
