Traveling with kids means fighting a near-constant battle to keep them engaged; the museums and cafés that lure the adults are rarely enough to stimulate younger minds. Thankfully, Thailand is here to help. The country’s always-busy, always-on character is a perfect fit for children. Enormous golden Buddhas! Eye-popping temples! Jungle zip-lining! Kickboxing! Whole towns that float! And that’s just for starters. There’s something new to discover in the Land of Smiles wherever you look. (Just don’t tell the kids that it’s educational.)

The adventure begins on a typically boisterous morning in Bangkok with a private tour of the colorful wats, temples and shrines of the historic city center. Later, navigate a maze of khlongs (canals) en route to the artists enclave of Klong Bang Luang for a traditional Thai puppet show, take in the sights and sounds of a Muay Thai kickboxing match (from ringside, no less) at night, and head into the countryside to visit some unusual markets, including one that floats on the river and one built in the middle of a railway line. Up in the peaceful northern capital of Chiang Mai, you’ll have the chance to ascend to Doi Suthep for an unbelievable view of this idyllic city’s temple-dotted skyline, go zip-lining above the canopy of a 1,500-year-old rainforest, and meet elephants at a rescue center. Last stop: Phuket, home to some of Thailand’s best beaches. Here, you’ll get an insider’s glimpse into life on the Andaman Sea via visits to a Muslim fishing village, discover Thai cooking in a local expert’s home, and learn about the island’s diverse heritage directly from the people who live there. Experience Thailand and turn “are we there yet?” into “do we have to leave already?” ... Show More »

Day 2: Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden-topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. From here, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) allows you a glimpse into small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Your next stop takes you to the most revered shrine in the Kingdom, Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as well as the splendor of the adjacent Grand Palace. For your last stop, we cross the Chao Phraya River by water-taxi to visit Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, Wat Arun’s iconic stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires that look as if to stand guard over the river. Enjoy a leisurely lunch with scenic views at the riverside Sala Rattanakosin restaurant to conclude your morning, and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. After lunch your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 3: Bangkok

This morning, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Bangkok’s maze of khlongs are a hub of traditional waterfront living that give the city its reputation as the “Venice of the East”. This afternoon, board a long-tail boat with your private guide to explore the khlongs, a fantastic way to watch the daily local life unfold along the canals. Visit the local artists’ community of Khlong Bang Luang, known for its unique century-old wooden homes, smaller art studios, vintage antique galleries, and historic temples that are seldom visited by tourists. The centerpiece of the Klong Bang Luang community is Baan Silapin, also known as the Artist’s House. The 200-year-old well-preserved family dwelling occupies a two-story wooden building hovering over one of the main khlongs, and is centered on a 300-plus-year-old chedi. Don’t miss the traditional half hour Thai shadow puppet performance, which is typically performed daily at 2 p.m. except on Wednesday. After the puppet show, head back to Ta Chang Pier for a transfer back to your hotel.

This evening your guide will take you to witness one of Thailand's most popular and exciting sporting events: Thai kick boxing at Rachadamnoen or Lumpini Stadium (ringside seats included). The fighting is interesting, but you'll especially enjoy the gambling pandemonium that goes along with it. Stay for an hour or two before returning to the hotel.

Day 4: Bangkok

The countryside surrounding Bangkok is dotted with lively traditional floating markets where colorful vendors paddle along in their canoes brimming with fresh fruit, vegetables and souvenirs, hawking their wares to shoppers on the banks. Have your camera ready for the first stop of the day at the truly unique Maeklong Railway Market, where a train runs through the center of the market several times a day. Merchants spring to action as the warning bell alerts them to the train’s approach, snapping protective awnings in place with moments to spare. After the train has passed, continue the drive with your private guide to the Amphawa floating market, a popular choice with locals over other floating markets in the region and a great stop for lunch. Afterwards, board a long-tail boat for a journey up the Mae Kong River, stopping at Wat Bang Kung to explore a small shrine to Buddha completely enclosed within the roots of a banyan tree. Back at the market, Thais congregate to purchase day-to-day goods, fruits, vegetables, clothing and even toys from the long-tailed boats. The area around the market is equally vibrant, featuring open-air restaurants specializing in seafood and Thai desserts and is a great vantage point of the canals filled with colorful boats.

The most sacred temple in northern Thailand is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and it is believed to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha. Head to the outskirts of the city with your private guide to visit this mountain-top temple compound, located 3,500 feet above the city below. Breathtaking views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside are the reward for the 300-step staircase to Doi Suthep, or you may choose to access the grounds via a small cable car. Head back into the center of the city to visit other iconic temples that give the region its crown as the cultural capital of Thailand, including Wat Suan Dok, a temple that is built in a mix of Sri Lankan and Lanna style that houses one of the most prestigious monk schools in all of Chiang Mai. End your temple tour with a visit to Wat Jed Yod, an Indian-inspired temple also known as the Temple of Seven Spires. Please dress respectfully by not wearing sleeveless T–shirts, shorts or strapless sandals when visiting the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Day 7: Chiang Mai

Elephants have long been a symbol of Thailand – integral to the Royal Family and common Thai people alike for their incredible strength, agility, and intelligence. Early this morning, your English-speaking guide will accompany you by private vehicle on the scenic hour-long journey along the Mae Taeng Valley to Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, a retirement sanctuary for elephants that previously worked hard in the tourism entertainment or logging industries. The rescue sanctuary is a progressive and ethically responsible approach to elephant eco-tourism, promoting good health, freedom, and happiness to the pachyderms. The sanctuary does not allow elephant riding.

Upon arrival at Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, change into traditional Thai clothing. After your wardrobe change, prepare a tasty snack of fresh fruits for the elephants and meet the heard. Enjoy your visit to the sanctuary, where you can feed the animals, roam freely amongst the heard, with opportunities to touch and play with the elephants. Break for lunch, then prepare an herbal sticky rice mixture as an afternoon treat for the elephants. During this time, the staff of the sanctuary will teach guests about the background of elephants in Thailand, their healthcare, and unique social behaviors. Walk with the elephants to the river and spend a memorable afternoon bathing the pachyderms, feeding them sticky rice balls and fruits, and watching them play in the mud. There will be ample opportunities to take memorable photos by the river. Relax over tea or coffee, change back into your regular clothing, then return back to your hotel by private transfer.

Day 9: Phuket

Small village communities in the islands surrounding Phuket are an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional Thai island lifestyle that has almost entirely vanished from more developed places such as Phuket. Your English speaking guide and private driver will accompany you to Bang Rong pier in Phuket, and continue with the guide by public ferry to Koh Yao Noi, a peaceful island to explore by mountain bike. People in Koh Yao mainly live on subsistence farming and fishing. Cycle along rice paddies with sleepy water buffaloes, rubber and coconut plantations, mangroves, tropical jungle, and rural villages. Stop for a relaxing picnic lunch on the scenic beach of the uninhabited island of Koh Kudu, and enjoy a swim in the clear waters off the coast. In the afternoon, head back to Phuket by ferry with your private guide.

Day 10: Phuket

Long before Phuket became famous as a beach destination, it was a crossroads for merchant traders and early immigrants hailing from the Arabian Peninsula, China, India and even Portugal. Their contributing culinary traditions have left a lingering mark on Phuket Town that seasoned it with a flavor unique in the world. Walk with your private guide through the bustling streets of the city center, where you can discover the architectural style of 19th century mansions that is typical of the region, known as Sino-Portuguese, has a strong Mediterranean character to it. The best markets come to life early in the morning to feed the locals on their way to work, or in the early evening after the heat of the day has worn off. Your guide will lead you deep into the heart of the markets, where you will sample Sino-Thai delicacies from places only the locals know about. Indulge in a breakfast of dim sum on a small soi behind the fresh market, nibble on curry with roti, and slurp noodles like a local on an unforgettable culinary adventure.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.

  • Donna F. — February 03, 2018 — Asia

Mark was able to put together the perfect tour! Our guide was very knowledge and we really appreciated her being so flexible with the holiday as we were there for Chinese New Year! She was able to take us to all the sights and part of the highlight was eating traditional Chinese food for New Year's.

  • Marjorie H. — October 01, 2018 — Asia

This tour was so well organized - everything went off perfectly. As two women traveling together in a country where the language barrier was a challenge, it gave us great peace of mind to know that we would be escorted wherever needed. We appreciated not being part of a group - our private tour guides were delightful and the entire trip was very special for my daughter and me.

  • Sandra S. — October 13, 2018 — Asia

The trip was very enjoyable. We gained new insights into China and the Chinese people. I wish we could have stayed longer. There is so much to see. My favorite sites were the Great Wall, Terra Cotta Soldiers, White Jade Buddah and the Shanghai night skyline. Cindy was most helpful in planning our trip. She's truly an asset to your company. Kensington Tours met all of our vacation needs.

  • Gina A. — January 09, 2019 — Asia

I usually don't write reviews but I have to tell you, this was the best vacation. Yuki, our Destination Expert, did an excellent job putting it all together and the guides were excellent. I will be using you guys for my next international vacation.

  • Larkin H. — December 22, 2018 — Asia

It was such a spectacular trip - one we will never forget.

  • Brian S. — November 02, 2018 — Asia

Gayan, our guide in Sri Lanka, was BEYOND amazing. I literally cannot do justice to how fantastic he was for my wife and I on our honeymoon. An amazing guide, a great companion, and an extremely good person.

  • Caryl G. — December 21, 2018 — Asia

It was a stellar experience in every way, but mostly due to the caliber of our tour guide. Tomo was exceptional in all areas - intelligence, expertise, personality and commitment to our comfort and needs. She truly went above and beyond and was a delightful companion, as well. It was actually emotional saying goodbye to each other!
