A land of wild contrasts, Thailand is both easygoing and boisterous – often at the same time. In Bangkok, quiet temples share city blocks with markets that never seem to close; Chiang Mai’s stunning wats and traditional teak homes are encircled by rings of sparkling skyscrapers, and even paradisical Ko Samui pulses to the near-constant throb of beach parties. But it’s these very paradoxes that make Thailand so utterly compelling. Whatever your mood, there’s an experience to match it. (And should that mood pass, just wait a few minutes – something equally exhilarating and/or peaceful will come along shortly.)

We get things started in Bangkok with an eye-opening look at daily life on a full day's exploration of some of the city’s most unusual markets – including the bizarre Maeklong Railway Market (where business pauses to allow passing trains to steam through the concourse) and a traditional floating market – before embarking on a longtail boat ride up the Mae Kong River. Later, explore Buddhist shrines and see Wat Pho’s enormous Reclining Buddha on a tour of Bangkok’s resplendent temples before jetting north to Chiang Mai, where you’ll learn the secrets of traditional Lanna cooking in private at a local family’s home, take in the otherworldly view from the top of Doi Suthep, and visit a Hmong hill-tribe village. Finally, head south to blissful Ko Samui for a full day of kayaking around Angthong Marine National Park (including the gorgeous Green Lagoon) and snorkeling the caves of at Koh Thai Piao. Sound busy? Don’t fret; there’ll be plenty of time to stretch out on the beach, too. ... Show More »

Accommodation: Ariyasom Villa (4*)

Constructed in 1942 as a private home during World War II, the Ariyasom Villa is still owned by the family of the original people who built it, creating both historical significance and a very caring attitude towards the guests that step inside. Originally constructed in the outskirts of the city, the hotel has found itself in the heart of the Central Business District due to the massive expansion of Bangkok. The hotel is situated just 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and is also located close to the Bangkok Skytrain and Bumrungrad International Hospital. Instilling a real sense of bygone Bangkok, the rooms are adorned with original artwork, Thai silk drapes, and equipped with charming bathrooms. Furthermore, based on a mainly vegetarian menu, with some seafood, Na Aroon Restaurant exudes a wonderful old Thai vibe that features a philosophy of healthiness and organic living. With a successful attempt at delivering an authentic Thai experience, the Ariyasom Villa also provides the Som Sen Spa, adjacent to the swimming pool which completes the perfect Bangkok stay.

Day 2: Bangkok

The countryside surrounding Bangkok is dotted with lively traditional floating markets where colorful vendors paddle along in their canoes brimming with fresh fruit, vegetables and souvenirs, hawking their wares to shoppers on the banks. Have your camera ready for the first stop of the day at the truly unique Maeklong Railway Market, where a train runs through the center of the market several times a day. Merchants spring to action as the warning bell alerts them to the train’s approach, snapping protective awnings in place with moments to spare. After the train has passed, continue the drive with your private guide to the Amphawa floating market, a popular choice with locals over other floating markets in the region and a great stop for lunch. Afterwards, board a long-tail boat for a journey up the Mae Kong River, stopping at Wat Bang Kung to explore a small shrine to Buddha completely enclosed within the roots of a banyan tree. Back at the market, Thais congregate to purchase day-to-day goods, fruits, vegetables, clothing and even toys from the long-tailed boats. The area around the market is equally vibrant, featuring open-air restaurants specializing in seafood and Thai desserts and is a great vantage point of the canals filled with colorful boats.

Day 3: Bangkok - Chiang Mai

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden-topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. From here, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) allows you a glimpse into small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Your next stop takes you to the most revered shrine in the Kingdom, Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as well as the splendor of the adjacent Grand Palace. For your last stop, we cross the Chao Phraya River by water-taxi to visit Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, Wat Arun’s iconic stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires that look as if to stand guard over the river. Enjoy a leisurely lunch with scenic views at the riverside Sala Rattanakosin restaurant to conclude your morning, and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. After lunch your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.

Day 4: Chiang Mai

This family is responsible for continuing the traditions of many generations in building their homes of teak wood and maintaining the natural surroundings in a way now rarely seen in Chiang Mai. You will have the opportunity to use traditional home recipes with authentic Northern Thai flavors that are different from standard dishes offered in commercial cooking classes. Select fresh ingredients from the garden to add to today’s cooking extravaganza. Take full advantage of the opportunity to get to know a real Thai family by becoming their houseguest for the day and enjoy a delicious home cooked lunch with them.

Day 5: Chiang Mai

Leave behind the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai today as you discover the beauty of Doi Suthep and Doi Pui National Park with your private guide. The most sacred temple in northern Thailand is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and is believed to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha. Head to the outskirts of Chiang Mai to visit this mountain-top temple compound, located 3,500 feet above the city below. Breathtaking views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside are the reward for the 300-step staircase to Doi Suthep. An instructor for the tree nursery of FORRU (Forest Restoration Unit of Chiang Mai University) will guide you on a two to three-hour hike along the nature trails of Doi Pui National Park, explaining the challenges of reforestation of the park.  Vegetation will change along the slopes of the mountain, with deciduous forest closer to the city and lush evergreen forest at higher elevations. Relax at the top of Doi Pui and enjoy the cooler temperatures and peaceful nature. Discover the Hmong village of Doi Pui, a local hilltribe where the villagers still observe their traditional style of dress and architecture, and earn their living selling handicrafts. The views from the village are spectacular and lunch will be at a local restaurant. On your return trip to Chiang Mai, take in the stunning views of the Montatarn Waterfall. During the dry season this hike is suitable for most levels of fitness. In the rainy season, path conditions will be slippery and only recommended for people with above average fitness levels. Sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
