Day 2: Ho Chi Minh City

The history of Ho Chi Minh City has many layers, telling a tale of decades of external influence from the Chinese and the French. With your private driver and English-speaking guide, start your visit today by exploring Cholon, the city’s Chinatown and widely regarded as the largest one in the world by area. The city used to be known as Saigon-Cholon until Vietnam’s independence from France in 1955. From here continue to the Jade Emperor Pagoda, also known as Phuoc Hai and regarded as one of the most interesting pagodas in the country. Built by the Cantonese community around the turn of the 20th century, it is still busy with worshipers. Filled with smoky incense, the pagoda with its elaborately carved figurines and decorated panels of carved gilt woodwork, is dedicated to Buddhist and Taoist deities. If you only visit one pagoda in the city, this should be the one. Finally, head over to Dong Khoi Area in the center of the city where the French colonial presence can be felt at the Notre Dame Cathedral, a Catholic Basilica commissioned entirely of imported French building materials. End with a visit to the Saigon Central Post Office, a stunning architectural marvel with rich Gothic, Renaissance and French influences.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 3: Ho Chi Minh City

Head into the countryside near Ho Chi Minh City today to spend half a day exploring an incredible feat of perseverance and wartime engineering, the famed Cu Chi Tunnels. With your private driver and English-speaking guide, gain important insight into the prolonged struggle against invading armies, and appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the Vietnamese people. The residents of Cu Chi took the war underground into a highly developed network of tunnels that at its height stretched as far as Cambodia and included meeting rooms, kitchens and triage areas. Imperceptible from the ground, opposing armies could roll their tanks over the bunkers without causing damage to the tunnels below. Living conditions were harsh – in addition to fighting the war, residents battled food and oxygen scarcity, venomous insects, and cramped living quarters.

Day 4: Lower Mekong River Cruise - Ho Chi Minh City - My Tho

Port charges are included in your multi-day cruise itinerary.

You will be privately transferred between your accommodations and Ho Chi Minh Pier by a professional driver and an English-speaking guide.

Bid farewell to the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City as your shared transfer departs the city, driving nearly 45 miles south to My Tho, where you'll embark your boutique ship.

Welcome aboard!
Take some time to get settled in to your stateroom and to explore the length of the ship. You will be served refreshing drinks and a light lunch as the ship steadily glides along the Mekong River. Bathe in the fading sunset on the balcony, followed by a briefing at the lounge. Later, a welcome dinner awaits you.

You'll drop anchor midstream near Cai Be, where you'll overnight.

Please note: activities and stops during the cruise are a suggested itinerary only, and are subject to change by the cruise line based on climactic and water conditions, such as high water and low water seasonality. Maintain an open mind and an adventurous spirit, and enjoy your voyage!

Accommodation: Heritage Line - The Jahan (3N)

Plying the slow, swirling waters of the Mekong, The Jahan is without a doubt the most romantic cruise liner in the region, evoking the opulent vessels of British India. No expense has been spared in the interior or exterior decorations, which showcase the talents of local woodworkers, weavers and artists. When guests aren’t relaxing in their luxurious cabins they can meet friends in the atmospheric East India Club; soak in the Jacuzzi on the Pool Deck; challenge a new friend to a game of chess in the Observatory Lounge; or enjoy a pampering massage in the Apsara Spa. With three decks, this vessel offers all the amenities of a fine resort, including a fitness center, steam rooms, a range of dining venues and an excellent spa. Stretching 70 meters from bow to stern, The Jahan features 26 beautifully-designed cabins on two decks, each with its own private balcony. Discover the bygone elegance of travel aboard the majestic Jahan. Just as Indian art and architecture influenced the Khmer and Cham cultures in the Mekong Delta, the stunning artistry of The Jahan will inspire you, as will the delta’s vibrant beauty.

Day 5: Cai Be - Lower Mekong River Cruise

Every morning, your day starts with an invigorating Tai Chi lesson on the sundeck, just as the sun begins its gentle glow.

Your activities today start with a guided group visit to Cai Be's boisterous and colorful floating market on a traditional sampan (a flat bottomed traditional Vietnamese wooden boat). During the ride, discover breathtaking landscapes along the river and quaff the rustic life on the Mekong Delta. The cruise will halt intermittently to allow you to observe how rice paste, rice paper, rice cookies, rice pop, rice wine and coconut candies are made. Enjoy local life along the canals on the way back to the ship for lunch.

In the afternoon, you cruise to Sa Dec. Upon arrival, embark a traditional sampan to tour Binh Thanh Island to visit an untouchable village. Here, every villager is involved in the process of making rattan mat, and this gives you the opportunity to interact with the old local people. Afterward, board the ship for a tranquil evening cruise towards Tan Chau, where you'll moor midstream overnight.

Day 6: Mekong River - Lower Mekong River Cruise

Start your day with a short excursion in Tan Chau, a pleasant town near the Cambodian border with sizeable Chinese, Kinh and Khmer community. Firstly, the journey takes you to the “evergreen” islands where you will be thrilled to learn about the life of the locals. The inhabitants of these islands live on houses poised on high stilts – a centuries-old tradition in this part of the Mekong Delta. You'll stop to visit a fish farm located in the Tan Chau canal – this farm consists of floating houses, and here, villagers make their living by cultivating fish. You continue by boat to Tan Chau pier, disembark here and stroll around this colorful local market, browsing lots of regional products. Return to the cruise ship after your market visit.

Overnight you'll anchor midstream near Phnom Penh.

Accommodation: Raffles Hotel Le Royal

Located in the heart of Phnom Penh, Raffles Hotel Le Royal is only a 30-minute drive from Pochentong International Airport and within easy access of the city's attractions such as the Royal Palace, Central Market, Russian Market and the National Artefacts Museum. Raffles Hotel Le Royal is the premier hotel in Phnom Penh, a hotel boasting those rare attributes of history and style. It was first established in 1929 and later reopened in 1997. Its facilities and amenities provide all the requirements of a modern world-class hotel, while still imparting an old-world charm through its style and décor, which is elegant yet comfortable, classic yet casual.

Day 8: Phnom Penh

Today, flutter away in Cambodian history with temples, palaces, and antiquities. Visit the city's oldest and tallest religious structure, the Wat Phnom. Your guide will show where the 14-century stupa and small pagoda stands, as you admire the temples historical architecture. Then continue the Royal Palace, built in 1866 under King Norodom for a glimpse of Khmer architecture. You will also visit the Silver Pagoda - named after its floors, which it's designed with 5000 silver tiles. 60% of the pagoda's contact was destroyed under Pol Pot's regime, but what remains is utterly spectacular. After the palace, wonder in the National Museum and seek its huge collection of fine Khmer sculptures and artifacts, recovered from ancient Angkor Empire. Lunch will be at Friends Restaurant, which will give you the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the hospitality business.

After lunch, you will be transferred by tuk-tuk to visit the Tuol Sleng Prison, housed in a high school, to capture the devastating horrors that occurred during Cambodia's Marxist movement. This excursion may prove distressing for some but is an important piece of Cambodia's recent past. After that, head to Choeng Ek, site of former orchards where more than 17,000 civilians were killed and buried in mass graves by victims of the Khmer Rouge between 1975 - 1979. Known as the "Killing Fields," this location sits around 17 kilometers outside of Phnom Penh. Day 10: Siem Reap

Angkor Archeological Park is as visually breathtaking as it is revered for its religious and archaeological significance. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the complex was home to the largest pre-industrial city in the world. Stretching some 150 square miles, the park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. You could spend weeks exploring the ruins, but today seize the opportunity to see the top highlights. With a local archaeologist and private English-speaking guide, visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom where you may take an optional walk along the wall to a hidden temple. Next visit the temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants, The Leper King and Preah Khan. Bayon is a favorite with photographers, with a multitude of smiling, serene faces carved out of the rock, each one unique. Centuries of Hindu and Buddhist influence have left their imprint on the temples of Baphoun, Terrace of Elephants and The Leper King, each with their own unique design and relief carvings depicting tales from both religions. Visit the famous jungle temple of Ta Phrom. The temple is slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, with strangler fig trees growing over the remains of the complex, giving Ta Phrom a surreal atmosphere. Next, explore Preah Khan. The temple has been left largely unrestored and untamed vegetation grows among the ruins. Adorned with garudas, an eagle-like divine being, the temple has significant Hindu and Buddhist religious symbols. Take a break for lunch at Malis restaurant and afterwards, visit the Angkor Conservation Center, constructed in 1920 to house original Khmer sculptures. The Ministry of Culture now runs the center and strictly controls access, which is not open to the public. This is a special access visit to a compound that houses more than 5,000 statues protected from wanton looting that has blighted hundreds of sites around Angkor. The finest are saved and hidden away inside Angkor Conservation’s warehouses, meticulously numbered and cataloged. End the day by visiting the ultimate Cambodian temple. Angkor Wat is one of mankind’s greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It was constructed in the early 12th century, then - two centuries later - was mysteriously abandoned by the Khmer civilization. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists visit Cambodia. Finish the tour with an unforgettable sunset on the quiet east side of Angkor Wat or at Pre Rup Temple.

Day 11: Siem Reap

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up by your private guide and driver to visit the Roluos Group of temples, the remains of the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Empire. Included are Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong. The sandstone carvings in the niches of the temples are as noteworthy as the Sanskrit inscriptions on the doorposts. The Bakong temple was built and dedicated to Shiva by Indravarman I. This is the largest and most interesting of the Roluos Group of temples and still has an active Buddhist monastery. After visiting the temples, you will receive a monks blessing for good luck and good health before returning back to Siem Reap.

More than the gateway to Angkor Wat, Siem Reap – Cambodia’s northwestern capital – is joy all on its own. During your free time, consider a trip to the Cambodian Cultural Village to catch a traditional Apsara dance performance (among many others), tour through the city’s many craft shops – the most famous being the Old Market known as Psah Chas – or head to the countryside to walk among verdant rice-paddies and perhaps visit the nearby bird sanctuary at Tonle Sap Lake. By night, be sure to head to Pub Street, a lively string of diners and bars that comes alive with light and music each evening.

  • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!
