There’s no better introduction to Thailand than Bangkok. Here, you’ll spend a full day exploring the busy capital’s sights, from an early-morning visit to Wat Suthat to beat the crowds to a longtail boat ride through the city’s vast network of canal-like khlongs. Later, climb the 300 steps (or take a cable car) to the stately Doi Suthep pagoda for incredible views of Chiang Mai, meet the patients at an elephant rehabilitation hospital, stroll through the temples and wats of Lampang, and haggle for souvenirs or chat with Buddhist monks on a private morning tour of the local markets.

A short flight to Luang Prabang, ancient capital of Laos, brings you to the sacred heart of this incredible country. Meet a local family and learn the tricks and techniques behind authentic Lao cuisine, then join a village elder to experience a traditional Baci ceremony, meant to celebrate and encourage future success.

The scene soon shifts to Hanoi, where you’ll visit must-see sites include Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature (among others) before settling in to watch a traditional water puppet show. After Hanoi, set off to picturesque Halong Bay to enjoy a luxurious overnight cruise aboard a traditional Junk-style vessel, then travel to Hoi An to share tea with a Kung Fu Grandmaster and to embark on a sunset river cruise. ... Day 2: Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. Then, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) takes you through small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Pause at Lak Muang, Bangkok’s city pillar, well worth a five-minute detour before heading to the iconic Grand Palace and the adjacent Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. By now it’s time to enjoy a leisurely lunch and take in the awe-inspiring views at the riverside Sala Rattanakosin restaurant and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. But you haven’t really arrived in Bangkok until you get out onto the river itself on a Long Tail Boat ride. So, after lunch, come and explore the khlongs and be amazed by the constantly changing sights, from Thai wooden houses on stilts to the many boats with sellers offering everything from fruit to souvenirs. Your day ends with a visit to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, its stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires and looks to stand guard over the river. Your guide can take you back to your hotel, or you might decide to stay and watch the sunset over Wat Arun from one of the rooftop bars across the river.

The most sacred temple in northern Thailand is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and it is believed to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha. Head to the outskirts of the city with your private guide to visit this mountain-top temple compound, located 3,500 feet above the city below. Breathtaking views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside are the reward for the 300-step staircase to Doi Suthep, or you may choose to access the grounds via a small cable car. Head back into the center of the city to visit other iconic temples that give the region its crown as the cultural capital of Thailand, including Wat Suan Dok, a temple that is built in a mix of Sri Lankan and Lanna style that houses one of the most prestigious monk schools in all of Chiang Mai. End your temple tour with a visit to Wat Jed Yod, an Indian-inspired temple also known as the Temple of Seven Spires. Please dress respectfully by not wearing sleeveless T–shirts, shorts or strapless sandals when visiting the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Accommodation: Rachamankha

Sophistication and zen-like simplicity combine to welcome guests to a world of serenity and contentment in Chiang Mai. The 25 rooms and suites of the leading boutique Rachamankha hotel offer discretion and seclusion amongst the colonnaded courtyards of the property with the convenience of being located next to Wat Phra Singh, the city’s most famous temple. The hotel distinctive architecture aesthetic is inspired by the eleventh centuries B.C. vernacular Chinese dwellings, from which Northern Thai architecture has its roots. The spacious grounds of the property protects hidden courtyards and gardens, where unexpected surprises and captivating spaces are to be found at every turn. The interior design of Rachamankha was inspired by an oriental concept of simplicity with extraordinary attention to detail. Walls are made with traditional lime plaster over handmade brick, the same technique used in the neighboring temples since the founding of Chiang Mai in 1296. The enchanting open-air massage pavilion overlooks a tranquil 65-foot pool where drinks and light snacks are served pool-side throughout the day. The property attracts guests who appreciate the discreet attention of the staff and the convenient proximity to notable temples of interest.

Day 4: Chiang Mai

Head out to the countryside around Chiang Mai with your private English-speaking guide to discover the temples of Lampang and Lamphun, as well as a moving visit to the FAE Elephant Hospital, the world’s first elephant hospital, founded in 1993. The elephants here are long-term patients recovering from injuries sustained in the logging trade or in the wild, and the rehabilitative care they receive here is unique to the region. Continue to Lampang, stopping to browse for the famous Lampang ceramics and a snack at the Kaad Thung Kwain Market. Discover the magnificent Lanna architecture of Temple Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a unique place in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages are still used as public transportation at the temple.  Enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant, and continue to Lamphun to visit the dazzling temple complex of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, a temple that is considered an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, especially for those born in the Year of the Rooster. If time permits on the way back to city, a stop can be made at Baan Tawai, a village on the outskirts of Chiang Mai that has gained a reputation as the best place to shop for handicrafts, particularly wood carvings.

Day 12: Hoi An

The ancient town of Hoi An and the elaborate temple complex of My Son in the neighboring countryside are an ideal pairing of two diverse UNESCO World Heritage sites. Start the day in the Hoi An’s historic center. A former fishing village set on the banks of the Thu Bon River and a strategic trading port for Southeast Asia, centuries of Chinese and Japanese influence have left their unique mark on this town. The streets of the old town are very narrow, so cars are not permitted in the historical center. There’s plenty to see in this delightful town, including Japanese Covered Bridges, the Pottery Museum, the 200-year-old Tan Ky House, Chua Ong Pagoda and the vibrant local market. You will visit them all during this experience.  After lunch at a local restaurant, you will be driven to My Son Sanctuary. My Son is Vietnam’s most important and iconic Cham site, and a must-see during your time in Vietnam. An hour and a half outside of Hoi An, spend the afternoon exploring the Hindu ruins dedicated to Shiva. Regarded as one of the foremost important Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia, My Son is widely considered to be the Champa civilization’s counterpart to the grand temple complexes on Indian influenced civilizations such as Angkor in Cambodia, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Indonesia. Heavy carpet bombing during the Vietnam War destroyed some of its former grandeur, but many of the temple sites in the complex have survived. Later in the day you’ll return to Hoi An town by boat, and upon arrival will be left at leisure to relax and discover this beautiful town on your own.

Hidden away down the backstreets of Hoi An, this is a unique opportunity to spend an hour of your day with a local icon.

Day 15: Siem Reap

More than the gateway to Angkor Wat, Siem Reap – Cambodia’s northwestern capital – is joy all on its own. During your free time, consider a trip to the Cambodian Cultural Village to catch a traditional Apsara dance performance (among many others), tour through the city’s many craft shops – the most famous being the Old Market known as Psah Chas – or head to the countryside to walk among verdant rice-paddies and perhaps visit the nearby bird sanctuary at Tonle Sap Lake. By night, be sure to head to Pub Street, a lively string of diners and bars that comes alive with light and music each evening.

Adventures await as your tour beings in the afternoon. You will ride past the King's Siem Reap residence and through lush greenery of the Royal Garden. Enjoy the breeze as you ride along the Siem Reap River, and into small Cambodian riverside markets. Past the river, you will find your way along red clay roads and small dirt trails, through a series of local villages and crossing small farms. This experience will immerse you into seeing how Cambodian residents live and touch authentic areas as you peddle along. You will wind your way towards the west edges of the Angkor Park, and make a brief stop to refuel on cold drinks and fresh fruit. Bypass the crush of visitors exiting the Park, and instead follow single track lanes, passing quaint rice fields, to small historic family parcels where life appears untouched for generations. As the temples close to visitors we will access park roads, and trails to view the remarkable ancient site. As the gleaming gold sunset casts over the ruins, sit and relax as the day comes to a peaceful end. To complete the evening, take a quiet Dragon Boat ride on the moat of the Angkor Thom, with local delicacies including soft drinks and champagne. At the end of your boat ride, an air-conditioned van is waiting to transport you back to your hotel in Siem Reap to arrive approximately at 7 pm, giving you plenty of time to enjoy dinner and evening activities in town. The private tour includes transportation, boats, bikes, an English-speaking guide, cold towels, water, snacks and temple passes.

Day 16: Siem Reap

This morning you will visit Banteay Srei, which for many years was off limits due to its remote location and Khmer Rouge activity in the area. Built in the late 10th century and dedicated to Shiva, Bantrey Srei's pink limestone walls contain the best bas-reliefs of any temple at Angkor. If you are interested, you may choose to visit the Cambodian Landmine Museum, Prevention and Rehabilitation Center. It is estimated that more than 110 million land mines are buried throughout the world. Buried within Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Kuwait and Cambodia are the largest concentrations of land mines. In Cambodia, efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and the major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people. Learn about the center's efforts and work on this visit. Moreover, Continue to visit Preah Khan, with its labyrinth of grey decaying stone courtyards that are slowly being reclaimed by the jungle. Large kapok trees extend limbs and roots throughout the carved stone work; while raucous parrots screech and monkeys keep watch to complete a surreal picture. Afterwards, enjoy your lunch at a delicious local restaurant in town.

The 25 rooms and suites of the leading boutique Rachamankha hotel offer discretion and seclusion amongst the colonnaded courtyards of the property with the convenience of being located next to Wat Phra Singh, the city’s most famous temple. The spacious grounds of the property protects hidden courtyards and gardens, where unexpected surprises and captivating spaces are to be found at every turn. The interior design of Rachamankha was inspired by an oriental concept of simplicity with extraordinary attention to detail. • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

  • Ann L — June 05, 2019 — Asia

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

  • Sandra S — February 09, 2019 — Asia

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.
