Verdant landscapes kissed by the sea and the heavens, sprinkled with rice paddies, golden temples, and glittering modern cities: Southeast Asia is so perfect it almost doesn’t seem real. But it is real – beautifully, bewilderingly, bedazzlingly so. Tropical Thailand sparkles from the tips of its temple spires to the edges of its golden beaches; serene Laos is a real-life Shangri-la; beautiful Vietnam is a feast for every sense, and Cambodia strikes a harmonic balance between ancient grandeur and modern style. It would be a shame to come all the way here and miss out on any one of these incredible places. Thankfully, you don’t have to.

This grand adventure across Southeast Asia truly lives up to its impressive title. It starts in Bangkok, where you’ll discover palaces and temples that share space with busy urban markets on a full-day tour of its streets and canal-like klongs. Up north in Chiang Mai, you’ll stroll golden wats and monasteries, gaze out over the city from atop Doi Suthep, meet elephants at a rehabilitation center, and discover the pleasures of Lanna cooking directly from the experts in a local family’s home. Later in Laos, explore the stunning caves, cliffs, and waterfalls of this secluded paradise by traditional wooden boat, then explore the wonders of Luang Prabang on a privately guided bike tour.

Day 2: Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. Then, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) takes you through small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Pause at Lak Muang, Bangkok’s city pillar, well worth a five-minute detour before heading to the iconic Grand Palace and the adjacent Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. By now it’s time to enjoy a leisurely lunch and enjoy the scenic views at the riverside Eat Sight Story restaurant and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. But you haven’t really arrived in Bangkok until you get out onto the river itself on a Long Tail Boat ride. So, after lunch, come and explore the khlongs and be amazed by the constantly changing sights, from Thai wooden houses on stilts to the many boats with sellers offering everything from fruit to souvenirs. Your day ends with a visit to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, its stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires and looks to stand guard over the river. Your guide can take you back to your hotel, or you might decide to stay and watch the sunset over Wat Arun from one of the rooftop bars across the river.

Head back into the center of the city to visit other iconic temples that give the region its crown as the cultural capital of Thailand, including Wat Suan Dok, a temple that is built in a mix of Sri Lankan and Lanna style that houses one of the most prestigious monk schools in all of Chiang Mai. Day 4: Chiang Mai

Elephants have long been a symbol of Thailand – integral to the Royal Family and common Thai people alike for their incredible strength, agility, and intelligence. Early this morning, your English-speaking guide will accompany you by private vehicle on the scenic hour-long journey along the Mae Taeng Valley to Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center. The rescue also provides care in a natural environment to a range of buffaloes, dogs and cats. At the camp, your shared elephant experience begins with an enriching learning experience about the personal stories of rescued elephants as told by the expert guides. Bond with the elephants by feeding them from a viewing platform. After learning how to safely and properly bathe an elephant, plunge into the river and help scrub these gentle giants as they splash around. If you prefer to stay dry, it is still fun to watch the elephants bathe and frolic from the comfort of your vantage point on the sandy shore. Enjoy a local lunch at the nature park following the elephants’ bath. Then, relax in the comfort of your private transfer back to your hotel.

Day 9: Hanoi

Hanoi enjoys a rich Imperial history dating back over a millennium, and a surprising diversity of local ethnic groups weave the fabric of the city’s rich tapestry. Start your day on the outskirts of the city with your private driver and English-speaking guide by visiting the Museum of Ethnology. The museum provides an insightful glimpse into the country’s lengthy history, with more than 15,000 photos and 10,000 objects and artifacts depicting a historical perspective of the lives, activities, customs, and habits of the 54 recognized ethnic groups of Vietnam. Drive back into central Hanoi, stopping at the Temple of Literature, built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius. Enjoy a local Vietnamese lunch at Banh Tom Ho Tay, a restaurant famous for its shrimp cakes in the West Lake area.

After lunch, visit Truc Bach Lake, featuring a monument to John McCain, commemorating the spot where he parachuted to safety after his plane was shot down over the lakes. At the nearby Huu Tiep Lake, the wreckage of an American B-52 bomber lies as a memorial to the war. From here, visit Hoa Lo Prison, constructed in 1896 by the French to house Vietnamese political prisoners. Under the French regime, it was known as the Maison Centrale and was an important symbol of colonialist exploitation of the era. The Vietnamese took it over in 1954, and the prison was subsequently used to house prisoners of war from 1964 to 1973, where it came to be known sarcastically as the Hanoi Hilton by American POWs. It is bound to be a moving visit.

Continue to Ngoc Son Temple, a pagoda situated on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake accessible by a classically painted wooden bridge. The view of the city from the pagoda is particularly popular. End your day at a by walking through the iconic Old Quarter. The streets of this district are bustling with scooters, bicycles, cyclos, and cars zipping around pedestrians. Day 12: Hoi An

The ancient town area in Hoi An and the elaborate temple complex of My Son in the neighboring countryside are an ideal pairing of two very diverse UNESCO World Heritage sites. My Son is Vietnam’s most important and iconic Cham site, and a must-see during your time in Vietnam. Head an hour and a half outside of Hoi An with your private driver and English-speaking guide to spend the morning exploring the Hindu ruins dedicated to Shiva. Regarded as one of the foremost important Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia, My Son is widely considered to be the Champa civilization’s counterpart to the grand temple complexes on Indian influenced civilizations such as Angkor in Cambodia, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Indonesia. Heavy carpet bombing during the Vietnam War has destroyed some of the former grandeur, but the majority of the temple sites in the complex have survived. Drive back into Hoi An to explore the ancient town and enjoy lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant on the way. As a former fishing village set on the banks of the Thu Bon River and strategic trading port for Southeast Asia, centuries of Chinese and Japanese influence have left their unique mark on this town. The streets of the old town are very narrow, so cars are not permitted in the historical center. Start with the 200-year-old Tamky House, a beautifully decorated home that has been lovingly preserved over seven generations.  Continue on foot to the Museum of Trade Ceramics, with fascinating pottery artifacts from all over Asia and the Middle East. Take a short walk through the historic town to the 17th century Chinese Chua Ong Pagoda – the neighborhood around it has distinctly Chinese inspired buildings and is lovely to explore at a relaxed pace.

Day 15: Siem Reap

Today your private guide and driver, will show you a full day of historical adventures, as you're being whisked away to see the breathtaking architecture and natural setting of one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. The different sites of Angkor cover around 250 square miles, including the forested areas. It features ruins dating back to a period between the 9th and 15th century, all sculpted in the distinctive Khmer style. As you approach the park, you will first see the South Gate of Angkor Thom. A walk along a half a mile trail past the walls that lead to a hidden temple is optional, but your guide will definitely ensure that you see the amazing temple areas of Bayon and Baphoun, as well as the Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break and have lunch inside the park before you head over to the grey-stoned jungle temple of Ta Phrom. Here you enter a mysterious world, as tree stumps seem to grow out of the temple and roots crawl up its walls. For many people this is the highlight of Angkor. The most famous part of the park is, of course, Angkor Wat, known to visitors around the world. Finish the tour with a peaceful sunset, as shades of violets, oranges, and pinks spread across the sky. After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up by your private guide and driver to visit the Roluos Group of temples, the remains of the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Empire. Included are Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong. The sandstone carvings in the niches of the temples are as noteworthy as the Sanskrit inscriptions on the doorposts. The Bakong temple was built and dedicated to Shiva by Indravarman I. This is the largest and most interesting of the Roluos Group of temples and still has an active Buddhist monastery. After visiting the temples, you will receive a monks blessing for good luck and good health before returning back to Siem Reap.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
