Day 2: Hanoi

Today, you will have the opportunity to explore Hanoi City. In the morning, your English speaking guide will meet you at your hotel with a private car. Your guide will accompany you on your tour of the Ho Chi Minh Complex and Ba Dinh Square, where silent sentries guard the marble and granite mausoleum where Ho Chi Minh lies in state. Next, observe the simple cottage where Uncle Ho lived and worked and then visit the nearby Ho Chi Minh Museum, an extraordinary tribute to the life of the “father of the country.” You will then move onto the Governor’s Residence, an excellent example of Hanoi’s French architecture, followed by a stop at the One Pillar Pagoda to hear the legend of its construction. Continue to the Temple of Literature, built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, for a quick escape from the busy streets.

Today, with the help of your personal English-speaking guide, you will enjoy a walking tour that explores the French Quarter through the ideas of its architects and the shape of its stones. The French Quarter provides insights into the time from the unraveling of all the threads of civilization, which have left their mark on the area, beginning with recent reminders of Soviet style. Just around the corner, discover a different world altogether as you visit the Buddhist pagoda of Quan Su, the center of Vietnamese Buddhism and Tran Hung Dao streets. You will learn about the French approach to justice and punishment and hear tales of daring Vietnamese resistance to the repressive regime. End the tour with a nice cup of Vietnamese coffee.

Day 8: Siem Reap

Today your private guide and driver, will show you a full day of historical adventures, as you're being whisked away to see the breathtaking architecture and natural setting of one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. The different sites of Angkor cover around 250 square miles, including the forested areas. It features ruins dating back to a period between the 9th and 15th century, all sculpted in the distinctive Khmer style. As you approach the park, you will first see the South Gate of Angkor Thom. A walk along a half a mile trail past the walls that lead to a hidden temple is optional, but your guide will definitely ensure that you see the amazing temple areas of Bayon and Baphoun, as well as the Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break and have lunch inside the park before you head over to the grey-stoned jungle temple of Ta Phrom. Here you enter a mysterious world, as tree stumps seem to grow out of the temple and roots crawl up its walls. For many people this is the highlight of Angkor. The most famous part of the park is, of course, Angkor Wat, known to visitors around the world. Finish the tour with a peaceful sunset, as shades of violets, oranges, and pinks spread across the sky. This private tour includes transportation, an English-speaking guide, lunch, water, and towels.

Accommodation: Ariyasom Villa (4*)

Constructed in 1942 as a private home during World War II, the Ariyasom Villa is still owned by the family of the original people who built it, creating both historical significance and a very caring attitude towards the guests that step inside. Originally constructed in the outskirts of the city, the hotel has found itself in the heart of the Central Business District due to the massive expansion of Bangkok. The hotel is situated just 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and is also located close to the Bangkok Skytrain and Bumrungrad International Hospital. Instilling a real sense of bygone Bangkok, the rooms are adorned with original artwork, Thai silk drapes, and equipped with charming bathrooms. Furthermore, based on a mainly vegetarian menu, with some seafood, Na Aroon Restaurant exudes a wonderful old Thai vibe that features a philosophy of healthiness and organic living. With a successful attempt at delivering an authentic Thai experience, the Ariyasom Villa also provides the Som Sen Spa, adjacent to the swimming pool which completes the perfect Bangkok stay.

Day 14: Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contrasts - Buddhist temples, golden topped palaces, trendy sky bars, and traditional Thai living along the waterways - called khlongs - offering marvelous photo opportunities. This morning, head with your private guide to the historic center of Bangkok and start your day at Wat Suthat. Few visitors come to this temple early, so much the better to enjoy the monks melodic chanting ritual. It’s an incredible sensory experience. Then, a walk to Wat Pho (famous for its 141-foot-long reclining Buddha) takes you through small alleys with wooden houses, guardian spirit signs and lively fruit and flower markets. Pause at Lak Muang, Bangkok’s city pillar, well worth a five-minute detour before heading to the iconic Grand Palace and the adjacent Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. By now it’s time to enjoy a leisurely lunch and take in the awe-inspiring views at the riverside Sala Rattanakosin restaurant and experience the mid-day bustling atmosphere of the lively Chao River. But you haven’t really arrived in Bangkok until you get out onto the river itself on a Long Tail Boat ride. So, after lunch, come and explore the khlongs and be amazed by the constantly changing sights, from Thai wooden houses on stilts to the many boats with sellers offering everything from fruit to souvenirs. Your day ends with a visit to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Unique from the rest of Bangkok’s temples, its stunning design is made up of colorfully decorated spires and looks to stand guard over the river. Your guide can take you back to your hotel, or you might decide to stay and watch the sunset over Wat Arun from one of the rooftop bars across the river.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Because we traveled in several cities we had many different guides. They were all very good, with some being outstanding. We would like to especially commend our Beijing guide, Jerry Wang, for his expert and very personalized guidance.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
