Day 1: Launceston - Cradle Mountain

Explore Tasmania at your own pace with your car rental (no guide) today.

Today, make your way to Cradle Mountain. Take the Bass Highway out of Launceston. The direct route is via Elizabeth Town and Sheffield. For a longer more scenic journey follow the Bass Highway all the way to the port town of Burnie. Attractions along the way include Pearn’s Steam World in Westbury and the Ashgrove Cheese Shop just after Elizabeth Town. The travel time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Meander along the banks of the Pencil Pine River, passing through a diverse array of vegetation, from button grass plains to tea tree thickets, and through eucalypt woodlands and mossy myrtle forests. At dawn and dusk, you’ll have an opportunity (if you’re fortunate) to see the elusive platypus as it frolics in the pools, or to catch a glimpse of a wombat as it feeds. Day 2: Cradle Mountain

Explore Tasmania at your own pace with your car rental (no guide) today.

Following your first stop at the majestic Knyvet Falls, a serene cascade that interrupts the meandering Pencil Pine River, this track continues to follow the path of the river before taking you through lush temperate rainforests. A five-minute detour, approximately a third of a mile after crossing the river, will take you to the striking confluence of the Pencil Pine River and the Dove River. As you continue, the trail climbs to the top of Dove Canyon where you are faced with 200 to 250 foot cliffs that form the boundaries of the Dove River. You are also treated to spectacular views down Cradle Valley and of Cradle Mountain on a clear day. Please be aware that this is a more challenging trek, featuring steep steps and inclines, with one small part involving scaling up rocks; not recommended after periods of rain. This self-guided walk (no guide) starts opposite the Cradle Mountain Lodge Shop, takes three hours to complete, and is graded as 'hard'. Please note: Guests with heart or respiratory problems should not attempt this walk. As well, please bring ample drinking water to stay hydrated during the hike.

The After Dark Feeding tour is an experience that is unique to Devils@Cradle. The tour begins with a short film which is followed by a summary of the outstanding conservation work done at the center, and concludes with a young devil being handled by your tour guide. While held by your guide, you will be given the opportunity to pet this rare creature. The second half of the tour takes you outside among a large breeding group of Tasmanian devils. At this time, the guide will enter the enclosures and feed a number of these animals while interpreting their behavior and answering any questions you may have. Devils are far more active during twilight and evening hours and introducing food generally stimulates some fierce competition between them. An experience you won't soon forget, the Devil's@Cradle After Dark Feeding is a unique and entertaining experience.

You may want to stop to visit the historic town of Evandale which is famous for its Sunday market and just shy of 4 miles off the highway. Afterwards follow the Midland Highway and Lake Leak Highway to the East Coast. If you have some time at hand, take the longer route (A4 & A3) via St. Marys and the Elephant Pass. Stop for lunch and try the famous crêpes of the Mount Elephant Pancakes Restaurant. Enjoy views of the eastern coastline along the way to Freycinet National Park. The direct driving route takes approximately 5.5 hours.

Day 4: Freycinet National Park

Explore Tasmania at your own pace with your car rental (no guide) today.

Visit the village of Coles Bay and its famous Wineglass Bay, which is rated as one of the top ten beaches in the world. On this two hour walk, you’ll travel from the village to Wineglass Bay Lookout. Although short, the walking track is fairly steep and requires a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to climb many stairs. The lookout platform itself offers spectacular views over the bay and the coastline. An essential inclusion on any trip to Tasmania, the views from the lookout are simply incredible and should not be missed. Please be sure to bring ample drinking water before setting out on this self-guide hike.

In the evening hours, you will drive to Bicheno, located approximately 40 minutes north of Freycinet National Park, to see the adorable little penguins at dusk off the Tasmanian eastern coastline. Evening tours offer a rare and thrilling chance to visit some dynamic locations not available during the daytime hours, including a private rookery (wild bird colony).  Marvel in amazement as the penguins emerge from the ocean excitingly and head for their homes. This rookery was established by the Bicheno locals to protect the penguin population.  This tour lets you get very close to the penguins, without disturbing their nightly journey. This tour departs at dusk, with penguin numbers varying seasonally.  The tour operates with a maximum of 23 passengers (group sizes limited to 24 participants) and departs from Bicheno Penguin Tours Office, Tasman Highway (opposite the supermarket).

Day 5: Freycinet National Park

Explore Tasmania at your own pace with your car rental (no guide) today.

Freycinet National Park is a great place for sea kayaking when the winds and conditions are right. Summer sea breezes can be strong on hot days, so early starts are recommended and it is good to get the latest weather reports before heading out. Most of the paddling is in Great Oyster Bay, a sheltered inlet that is ideal for leisurely canoeing. The outer coastline of the peninsula is only for experienced paddlers as there are few, if any, take-outs (all cliffs) on the sea-side of the peninsula; please be aware. There is access to many designated wilderness camping areas by sea kayak as well, and it is also possible to reach the magnificent camps on Schouten Island. Experienced paddlers can paddle to Schouten Island in a day in good weather, however, the journey is some 17 miles and should only be considered by those with ample experience and stamina.

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 6: Freycinet National Park - Hobart

Leave Freycinet National Park and follow the Tasman Highway along the east coast to Hobart. On the way, visit Swansea, a small seaside town that offers great views of Great Oyster Bay and Freycinet National Park. It is said to be one of Tasmania’s most scenic villages. Further south are the towns of Triabunna, a historic port-side town and Orford ideally located to explore the Maria Island National Park. Learn about Tasmania’s history in the Hobart Town Historical Model Village in Richmond 22 kilometers north of Hobart or drive through Sorell, which is the island’s oldest farming town. The journey takes approximately 3 hours.

Drop your rental vehicle off this morning at the Hobart downtown location.

Combining a historic tour of Hobart with a visit to Salamanca and Battery Point, this three hour experience with a local Tasmanian guide will provide you with in-depth insights into Hobart’s past and present. Begin with an interpretive walk though Hobart and hear fascinating stories of how Tasmania’s capital city was established, how it grew to become the vibrant waterfront city of the present, and also learn about the hardened characters who were major influences in the town’s early days. In Salamanca, explore a quaint district of sandstone buildings that house a range of restaurants, galleries and craft shops, then visit Battery Point, Hobart’s most exclusive enclave. Kensington Tours did a great job in setting up our itinerary for a trip to Australia. We were wowed by the Alamanda Resort hotel in Palm Cove, Queensland. • Juliet G — November 07, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Colin Rowe was fabulous. He showed real concern for our comfort and was always there to answer our questions. He is very knowledgeable and a real asset to your organization. We would ask for him by name if we travel again. The meals were delightful, and the tour guides were not only well versed in the culture and surroundings, but offered delightful personal stories during the ride that enhanced our trip. Our accommodations were excellent - both the Four Points Sheraton in Perth and the Radisson Blu in Sydney were first class. Clean and very comfortable. Overall, a wonderful trip!
