Day 2: Cradle Mountain

Explore Tasmania at your own pace with your car rental (no guide) today.

After discovering the beauty of the Knyvet Falls this track continues to follow the path of the Pencil Pine River, before taking you through impressive temperate rainforests. A five minute detour, approximately 500 meters after crossing the river, will take you to the striking junction of the Pencil Pine River and the Dove River. As you continue, the track climbs to the top of Dove Canyon where you are faced with 60-70 meter cliffs that form the boundaries of Dove River. You are also treated to spectacular views down Cradle Valley and of Cradle Mountain on a clear day. Please be aware this is a more challenging track with one small part involving scaling up rocks; not recommended after periods of rain. This is a self-guided activity and does not include a guide. The walk starts opposite the Cradle Mountain Lodge Shop, takes 3 hours and is graded as 'hard'. The track features steep steps or inclines and is designed for people that walk regularly. Visitors with heart or respiratory problems should not attempt this walk.. It is recommended to bring at least 1 liter of water per person.

The 'After Dark Feeding' tour is an experience that is unique to Devils@Cradle. The tour commences inside with a short film followed by a summary of their conservation work and then concludes inside with the handling of one of their young devils by your tour guide - you will be given the option of having a pat if you wish! The second section of the tour is outside amongst a large breeding group of Tasmanian devils. The guide will enter the enclosures and feed a number of these animals whilst interpreting their behavior and answering any questions you may have. Devils are far more active at this time of the day. Introducing food generally stimulates some fierce competition between the animals. The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours and departs at 5.30 p.m., 7.00 p.m., 8.30 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. Transfers between your Cradle Mountain accommodation and the Sanctuary are not included.

  • Arthur P — September 08, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

It was all we hoped for and more, fantastic experience.

  • Kathleen H — September 08, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Our Kensington destination expert, Kate Perrier, did an extraordinary job of putting together a custom itinerary for my family. My family and I travelled nearly 11,000 miles to get to Australia and got to see everything we were most interested in thanks to Kate's expert planning!

  • Michael P — August 22, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Everything went like clockwork! Our family absolutely loved our trip which was made possible by the Kensington travel team.

  • Pam Gerus — May 23, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

We've never done tours before and planning for Australia seemed overwhelming until I looked at tour options. Kensington was highly rated. I really liked the basics of the tour we picked and Jessica customized it and changed things around to better fit what we were interested in and the timing we preferred. I liked the multiple, smaller tours as opposed to being with the same group for a week. The tours selected were with great companies, small groups, very informative and fun. Also, I was pretty scrambled after the long flight. Having Lyn Redfern meet us at the airport, talk us through the plans, answer our questions, get us situated at the hotel was really comforting and welcoming. The selected hotels were great. Overall a good experience and I'd definitely consider having Kensington set up future trips.

  • Adeline R — February 07, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Right from working with Jessica on setting our vacation plan to the execution was fantastic.

  • Ken S. — August 10, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

This was a great trip from start to finish. Everything planned was right on schedule without any problems. All the drivers and tour guides were very helpful and friendly. The accommodations were top notch. Thank you Kensington tours for a perfect vacation to Australia.

  • Philip S. — May 19, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

Superb trip, and as mentioned earlier, kudos to Louise Baer for her outstanding work and for patiently putting up with me and all my calls and questions.

  • Edith R. — May 19, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

We had a wonderful experience with Kensington Tours from the planning stages with your very helpful agent Aseem Mahajan, to the very friendly meet and greet services at each airport. The hotels fit our needs perfectly and the tours were fun and interesting with guides that were exuberant and loved showing us Australia. Thank You for a truly grand family experience.

  • Jim M. — May 18, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

    Excellent tour.

  • Jennifer A. — May 12, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

Thank you Kensington Tours and Kevin Rowland for organizing this much needed trip for our family! I had read several positive reviews for Kensington Tours, but I didn't expect the level of service that we received. From beginning to end, the entire process was seamless. Each tour/excursion was led by a knowledgeable, personable and entertaining guide.
