Delve deep into the natural splendor, entrancing culture, and sophisticated allure of Australia’s southern coast. From seaside Perth to artsy Adelaide, from stylish Melbourne to the wild heart of Tasmania, this adventure opens up a side of Australia that other travelers overlook.

We begin on the shores of the Indian Ocean in Perth, the sunshine capital of Australia. Step out and enjoy the city’s balmy Mediterranean-like climate on a private tour of scenic sites like beautiful Kings Park and idyllic Cottesloe Beach before exploring the cosmopolitan Fremantle neighborhood and the fascinating Western Australia Maritime Museum. The day ends on a pleasant note with an afternoon cruise through Perth along the scenic Swan River.

To the south of Perth lies Margaret River, a country town that, thanks to its Bordeaux-esque terroir, has become Australia’s leading premium wine region. Here, you’ll visit Leeuwin Estate, a winery famed for its excellent vintages, concert series, and award-winning restaurant overlooking a forest of towering karri trees. You’ll be treated to a private wine tasting featuring Leeuwin’s iconic Art Series wines before a magnificent three-course lunch.

The journey continues 1,300 miles (1,600 kilometers) to the east in Adelaide, the first Australian city founded by free settlers. With a private guide, step out and explore this burgeoning hub of art via a tour of its distinctive squares, parks, and gardens, the bluestone mansions and row cottages of its northern reaches, the bustling Central Market, and three unique museums dedicated to crafts, Aboriginal culture, and wine. Later, head out to aptly named Kangaroo Island for an encounter with its namesake marsupials, as maybe even sea lions before bunking down for the night at a finely appointed lodge on the island itself. ... Show More »

Next stop: Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and the most European of Australia’s cities. You’ll get to experience its famous café scene, street culture, and vibrant multiculturalism through a private tour of its boutique-lined laneways, the historic Royal and Block arcades, a pair of stylish covered walkways.

Finally, leave the mainland behind and cross the Bass Strait to Hobart, the capital of ruggedly beautiful Tasmania. Nature is at its rawest down here (roughly one-fifth of the island state’s land is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Area). You’ll witness it first-hand on a private tour of the Tasman Peninsula’s geological wonders and the Port Arthur Historic Site before meeting some of its most famous residents: Tasmanian devils. The adventure ends on a refined note. First, view the fascinating collection of ancient and modern works on display at the Museum of Old & New Art (MONA), followed by lunch at the gallery or in the historic village of Richmond, a preserved colonial settlement situated amid the scenic surroundings of the Coal River Valley wine region.

Day 2: Perth

Start your day by staying within the city limits and head to Kings Park, overlooking the city of Perth and the Swan River. The Park has much to offer with its sweeping vistas, Botanic Garden, wildflowers (which are spectacular, especially in Spring), and native bush land (two-thirds of the park). There are extensive city and river views with a panorama to the Darling Scarp. The magnificently sited State War Memorial is also one of several scenic vantage points. Enjoy a morning tea stop before making your way out of the city and stop at one of Perth's best kept secrets, Cottesloe Beach. Cottesloe is one of Perth's most popular beaches and attracts people looking to cool off from the hot summer heat. Its crystal clear waters, regular swell and fun atmosphere make it popular with swimmers, body boarders and surfers alike. Cottesloe's famous pine trees which can be seen all the way from Rottnest Island provide welcome shade from the sun and grassy areas to relax in. You will enjoy lunch here, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Travel on to the coast and to Fremantle to find heritage buildings and cosmopolitan culture. Every day of the week, the streets are abuzz with shoppers and al fresco diners, while pubs brim over with patrons from across the globe. Best known for its docks, marinas, and charming heritage sandstone buildings, head to Victoria Quay to visit the Western Australian Maritime Museum. Designed to depict a boat stranded on a sandy promontory, the museum houses famous sailing vessels along with hands on exhibits bringing sea-faring history to life. To finish off this exciting day, board a cruise to take you back to Perth along the beautiful Swan River. The cruise includes tea, coffee and wine tastings of premium Western Australian wines. One final stop at Kings Park allows time to enjoy or photograph the outstanding panorama of Perth and the Swan River before arriving back into the city late afternoon.
