Day 8: Ayers Rock

Revel in the early morning serenity of a truly spiritual place as the sunrise colors change on Kata Tjuta. Departing the resort you will travel through the landscape to the entrance of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. From there is it a 40-kilometer journey through the desert landscape to the mighty rock formation. On arrival at the viewing area, you walk to the best vantage point to see the 36 domes that comprise this spiritual place while watching the sun’s morning glow as the desert comes alive. Make your way to the western side of Kata Tjuta where you will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy an outback picnic breakfast. As you approach the entrance to Walpa Gorge, named for the wind (Walpa) that whistles between the massive domes that shape Kata Tjuta, the result of eons of weathering and continual upheaval, your guide will share the significance of this men’s sacred ceremonial site. Take a stroll between these mighty conglomerate rock walls as your guide explains how the environment and the geology have evolved over millions of years. Your guide will return you to your accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort. Departure is between 4.45 a.m. and 6.15 a.m. depending on the time of year. The tour takes approximately 5 hours. The group size may vary between 2 and 11 passengers. Please bring some water with you.

Come and join your guide to explore the most profound and culturally significant monolith in Australia. Departing the resort the tour will travel through the landscapes to the entrance of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. From this point it is only a matter of minutes before the spectra of Uluru rises from the sand dunes to demonstrate its enormity and presence in this country. The first step allows you a photographic opportunity of this amazing icon. With Uluru looming in front of you, your guide journey toward the base. Walk with your guide to a place of tranquility. The closer you wander the more you surrender to the realization of the sheer size of this monolith. As you drive around the base, your guide will take you to the entrance of Mutitjulu Waterhole, a semi-permanent watercourse nestled in the contours of Uluru. Here you will learn the Creation stories of Liru (poisonous snake) and Kuniya (python) as well as a number of other stories associated with other prominent Tjukurpa (Dreaming) stories. You will see the rock art of the ancients and learn how Uluru was, and still is, a significant location for teaching young Aboriginal people. Then adjourn to the new Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area where you will observe an uninterrupted view of Uluru with Kata Tjuta in the background. Your guide will then return to your accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort. Entrance fee to National Park is included. The tour departs at 2-3:30 p.m. depending on the time of the year (confirmed at time of booking) and returns 5 hours later. This small group tour has a limit of 11 participants per guide.

  • Arthur P — September 08, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

It was all we hoped for and more, fantastic experience.

  • Kathleen H — September 08, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Our Kensington destination expert, Kate Perrier, did an extraordinary job of putting together a custom itinerary for my family. My family and I travelled nearly 11,000 miles to get to Australia and got to see everything we were most interested in thanks to Kate's expert planning!

  • Michael P — August 22, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Everything went like clockwork! Our family absolutely loved our trip which was made possible by the Kensington travel team.

  • Pam Gerus — May 23, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

We've never done tours before and planning for Australia seemed overwhelming until I looked at tour options. Kensington was highly rated. I really liked the basics of the tour we picked and Jessica customized it and changed things around to better fit what we were interested in and the timing we preferred. I liked the multiple, smaller tours as opposed to being with the same group for a week. The tours selected were with great companies, small groups, very informative and fun. Also, I was pretty scrambled after the long flight. Having Lyn Redfern meet us at the airport, talk us through the plans, answer our questions, get us situated at the hotel was really comforting and welcoming. The selected hotels were great. Overall a good experience and I'd definitely consider having Kensington set up future trips.

  • Adeline R — February 07, 2017 — Australia & Pacific

Right from working with Jessica on setting our vacation plan to the execution was fantastic.

  • Ken S. — August 10, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

This was a great trip from start to finish. Everything planned was right on schedule without any problems. All the drivers and tour guides were very helpful and friendly. The accommodations were top notch. Thank you Kensington tours for a perfect vacation to Australia.

  • Philip S. — May 19, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

Superb trip, and as mentioned earlier, kudos to Louise Baer for her outstanding work and for patiently putting up with me and all my calls and questions.

  • Edith R. — May 19, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

We had a wonderful experience with Kensington Tours from the planning stages with your very helpful agent Aseem Mahajan, to the very friendly meet and greet services at each airport. The hotels fit our needs perfectly and the tours were fun and interesting with guides that were exuberant and loved showing us Australia. Thank You for a truly grand family experience.

  • Jim M. — May 18, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

    Excellent tour.

  • Jennifer A. — May 12, 2016 — Australia & Pacific

Thank you Kensington Tours and Kevin Rowland for organizing this much needed trip for our family! I had read several positive reviews for Kensington Tours, but I didn't expect the level of service that we received. From beginning to end, the entire process was seamless. Each tour/excursion was led by a knowledgeable, personable and entertaining guide.
