Often overshadowed by Australia and Antarctica, its continent-sized neighbors, comparatively tiny New Zealand looms large among adventure seekers. You’d be hard-pressed to find a country that packs more adrenaline-fueled thrills into 104,000 square miles (267,000 square kilometers) of space. And oh, what a glorious space it is: glacier-carved fjords and sparkling beaches line the coasts; jagged peaks and massive volcanoes stretch toward the heavens; verdant hills speckled with sheep shield incredible cave networks from all but the most intrepid explorers. (It should come as no surprise that this real-life fantasyland served as the stand-in for Middle-Earth in the Lord of the Rings films.) New Zealand is tailor-made for epic adventures and thrilling tales. All that’s missing from the story is you.

Merely reading the list of must-try experiences this trip offers is a white-knuckle thrill of its own. In Auckland, you’ll climb the iconic Harbour Bridge for an unbeatable view, then climb aboard an authentic America’s Cup racing yacht for a sail around the bay. From Auckland, the adventure moves south and underground near Hamilton, where you’ll venture into the fascinating subterranean world of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves on a cave-tubing expedition. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface in New Zealand, particularly at your next stop: Rotorua, a captivating valley filled with geothermal vents and volcanic landscapes. After exploring the Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Waimangu Volcanic Valley, learn how people have lived off this unique landscape for centuries on an enlightening visit to Whakarewarewa, a traditional Maori village. Down on the South Island, things get even more intense. Queenstown, the self-proclaimed “Adventure Capital of the World,” is the hometown of bungee-jumping, so it’s only fitting that you take the plunge here. After warming up with a 440-foot (134-meter) leap from the famed Nevis Highwire Platform in the Southern Alps, you’ll have the chance to go even bigger courtesy of a 12,000-foot (3,658-meter) tandem skydive. Need still more speed? Climb into a jetboat and skim across the surface of the Shotover River with the help of an expert daredevil pilot. But even thrill-seekers need to settle down sometimes. After soaking up Queenstown’s adrenalized pleasures, slip away to the mist-cloaked shores and dreamy waterfalls of serene Milford Sound for a relaxing fjord cruise, followed by a leisurely full-day hike through the ancient beech forest and blissful Routeburn Flats of Mount Aspiring National Park. ... Day 4: Rotorua

Pickup from Rotorua (1235 Fenton St, Rotorua) for your tour to Matamata (Hobbiton). Your tour starts with a drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges. Your guide will escort you through the ten acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created.
