Day 5: Rotorua

Discover Rotorua’s most popular geothermal parks on this half day private tour, accompanied by a local naturalist guide. Begin with a scenic drive through volcanic landscapes dotted with farmlands as well as native and exotic forests where you’ll discover an area rich in geothermal activity, featuring not just volcanoes, but also geysers, New Zealand's largest boiling mud pool, and hot springs. On this adventure, you’ll visit two heritage parks which showcase a variety of geothermal activity; at Wai-o-Tapu, set your sights on amazingly colorful hot springs and a moon-like landscape, as well as the world-famous Lady Knox geyser. At Waimangu Volcanic Valley, follow your guide as the history of the Mount Tarawera is detailed – focusing on the enormous 1886 eruption which formed or significantly altered several nearby lakes – while also learning about the regions native flora and fauna. After spending the morning exploring these striking parks, you’ll be returned to your hotel in the early afternoon.

Enjoy a guided tour of the valley with one of Te Puia's world renowned guides. As part of the tour you will visit New Zealand's national carving and weaving schools and witness these disciplines in practice under the guidance of full-time master carvers and weavers. You will visit award-winning interactive galleries, see a kiwi bird up close, and most importantly, hear stories told by descendants of the valley. To conclude the first half of the tour you will visit the geyser and mud pools and then be invited to have a short rest prior to the beginning of the evening experience. Traditionally, Te Po is an intimate time for sharing knowledge while enjoying food, culture and friendship. Taking place at Te-Heketanga-a-Rangi (The Heavenly Origins), which is an area comprising of twelve monumental carvings reaching skywards – each one representing a Maori deity – you’ll hear the stories of the past and see how these traditions live on today. Feeding guests is regarded by Maori as an honor and a sign of a tribe’s Mana (standing), and as a result, you can expect a lavish banquet meal during the evening. This meal combines contemporary cooking techniques with traditional Hangi (earth-cooked oven meal), where Kai (food) is steam-cooked by hot rocks in the earth, giving it a delicious smoky flavor. Following dessert, you will be transferred to the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley to take in the spectacular lighting. Here, you can wander around the illuminated natural attractions, including Pohutu geyser. A shared outing, this tour can accommodate up to 160 guests.

  • Mona Y — June 14, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

Rehana was wonderful. Her recommendations were all top notch and made me realize how well she knew Australia. Everything ran like clockwork and that allowed us to make the most of what was actually a short time in Australia. She was also very patient with my many questions and gave me alternatives when I asked. It is the third time that we've used Kensington Tours and I can't imagine using anyone else. We've never been disappointed.

  • Curtis L — March 21, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

Kerry Brown was an exceptional travel consultant throughout the entire planning phase as well as a responsive resource as we encountered a few challenges while travelling. Her personal interest in our comfort, convenience, and pleasure made our trip an unforgettable experience. We will definitely consider using Kensington for international travel.

  • Ellen M — February 12, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

  • Holly T — April 17, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

Samantha was amazing and the trip was wonderful and enchanting! Guides were amazing and super knowledgeable. Special shout out to Kenn Holmes (Brisbane) who not only provided an amazing tour of the Australian Zoo but went above and beyond to look for medical care for me for an ear infection during our day together. He was amazing!

  • Susan S — June 05, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

Our trip to New Zealand was a special occasion in that I was celebrating my 70th birthday. Our itinerary was jam-packed as we were visiting both the North and South Islands, that included 6 cities and 4 national parks. Kensington Tours truly did an outstanding job arranging for our transportation, hotels and tour guides. They far exceeded my expectations.

  • Jennifer B — February 19, 2019 — Australia & Pacific

We felt like rock stars on this trip! Everything was so well arranged and of high quality. The guides were all excellent and even the drivers to and from the airports provided a mini-tour during the transport. Many thanks for Jennifer May for accommodating our preferences of activities and hotels and making this all possible.

  • Jennifer U. — September 30, 2018 — Australia & Pacific

We had run into a snag on our trip. When we could not resolve this on our own we reached out to the after-hours contact at Kensington and between her and our original trip organizer, the issue was resolved for us promptly. It let us enjoy the rest of our trip without the stress of having to deal with the issue on our own. Peace of mind is priceless.

  • Ronald J. — August 13, 2018 — Australia & Pacific

Ashwarya, my Destination Expert, was on top of everything and answered all my questions.

  • Joshua J. — July 24, 2018 — Australia & Pacific

I am always thrilled with Kensington and their experts.
