Later in the Arenal region, look down on the jungle from up above on a private tour of Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park with an eye peeled for sloths, boars, and howler monkeys, take a dip at the base of the astonishing La Fortuna waterfall, and follow a specialist guide through the trees to the foot of the mighty Arenal Volcano. After crossing Lake Arenal via private boat, the scene shifts to Monteverde. With a private guide, you’ll uncover the mysteries of the Hidden Valley and explore the majestic Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, home to a dazzling variety of tropical birds and hundreds of mammal and amphibian species. Day 3: Tortuguero

Start the day at the crack of dawn and set out on an exploration of the gardens of Tortuga Lodge. Littered with exotic birds, reptiles and amphibians, discover the incredible range of wildlife found on the property alongside an expert naturalist guide. Meticulously tended, the gardens feature palms, heliconia plants and Mountain Almond Trees, the primary source of food for the great green macaw. Although every exploration is unique, howler monkeys, tiger herons, toucans and boa constrictors are commonly spotted on these early morning surveys.

Discover the lagoons and creeks of Tortuguero National Park on an eye-opening and informative boat tour. Over the course of three hours, your expert naturalist guide will help identify the sights and sounds emanating from the thick of the jungle. The timing of your outing will be determined by weather conditions, however, if heading out in the morning hours you’re likely to see animals including howler monkeys, northern jacanas, river otters and caimans on the prowl for food. In the afternoon, egrets and tiger herons return to their nests, white faced capuchin monkeys play in the trees, and the great symphony of the jungle comes into full effect. As the sun descends on Tortuguero an eerie silence sets in, broken only by the odd howler. In short, whether gliding through the park in the morning, afternoon or during dusk, the park offers a unique and impressive experience.

The village of Tortuguero, originally known as Turtle Bogue, is – geologically speaking – one of the youngest places on Earth. Learn about how the area surrounding the village, a flooded tropical rainforest, came to be with the help of your naturalist guide. The region is now the largest protected rainforest in Central America, helping to ensure the dazzling biodiversity that draws visitors year-round remains pristine. Learn about the production of cocoa beans, one of the economy’s central exports, and sample a traditional Aztec and Maya drink before heading into the village. Once a community known for logging, coconut and the turtle trade, it has refashioned itself in recent decades to focus primarily on tourism. Here, tour Tortuguero park headquarters, visit the general store and stroll down paths dotted with colourful homes, chatting with locals along the way.

Day 4: Tortuguero - Guápiles - Arenal

After an incredible time at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens, it is time to bid farewell to the region. As part of a shared transfer, board a boat for a one hour ride to arrive at La Pavona in Guapiles.

Enjoy a private transfer from Guápiles to your accommodations in Arenal. Approximate travel time is three hours.

Take some time to soak in the deeply relaxing hot springs at Kioro Suites & Spa. A highlight of any trip to Costa Rica, the invigorating thermal waters are the ideal place to unwind, perhaps with a drink in hand. Strategically placed to ensure a continual flow of warm water and to capitalize on the jungles unique and exotic ambience, time at leisure to unwind in the springs is highly recommended.

Accommodation: Kioro Suites and Spa

Seated at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, near La Fortuna, the Hotel Arenal Kioro is blessed with spectacular gardens and a view of this gift of nature. The 53 rooms feature large beds and bathroom facilities, along with all the amenities of home. Dine at the hotel restaurant, Orchids, and sample a host of international and local specialties. Not far from the hotel, in La Fortuna, there are a number of other restaurants that share authentic Costa Rican fare. Test your limits with zip lining, or plan a butterfly hike. Later, play a game of ping pong or splash around the pool. Arenal Kioro offers a fabulous place with a natural viewpoint to the Arenal Volcano. The hotel has 27 acres of undulating land, surrounded by two streams (La Palma and Kioro) with crystalline waters that begin to flow in the Arenal Volcano National Park. It has two paths where plant species are identified, and private thermal springs surrounded by exuberant gardens.

Day 5: Arenal

Home to spectacular wildlife with natural wonders abound, join your specialist guide and driver on a private tour of Arenal’s quintessential highlights. Begin by tracking along hanging bridges high in the rainforest canopy and discover an incredible range of wildlife – from insects as small as leaf-cutter ants to mammals as large as howler monkeys, with sloths, boars, snakes, spiders and dart frogs in between – as you explore this renowned two-mile circuit. Transfer to La Fortuna Waterfall and hike down to the base of the falls to take in the sight and sounds of this stunning cascade, plunging some 200 feet into the picture-perfect landscape below. Be sure to have your bathing suit ready, as just beyond the falls is the ideal place to take a dip. After climbing to the top of the falls (via stairs), enjoy a replenishing and freshly prepared picnic lunch with the jungle as a backdrop. Fueled for another exploration, your specialist guide will lead the way around the base of Arenal Volcano. Between 1968 and 2010 it was among the most active in the world, but in recent years it has lay silent, today affording you the perfect opportunity to explore its unique ecosystem. This portion of the day’s adventure is not challenging; instead, it is an opportunity to spot wildlife and learn about the many rare and endemic species, plants included, that make the northern lowlands of Arenal one of the most bio-diverse places on Earth. Though every exploration is unique, capuchin monkeys, coati, toucans, sloths and ocelots may be spotted, along with an incredible array of bird life, the Resplendent Quetzal being one of the regions more famed, if rare, inhabitants. Toward the end of your journey, catch the view from a lovely vista - complemented by an ice cold beverage – before being returned to your hotel.

Day 7: Monteverde

A privately driven vehicle will pick you up from your hotel for a transfer to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Arguably the main attraction in Costa Rica, the massive 10,500 hectares draws 70,000 tourists a year. It is known as the site with the largest number of orchids in the world with 34 of its 500 species newly discovered. Over 60 species of amphibians, including the golden toad, have been found in Monteverde. This area is also a stop for 91 species of migratory birds. The famed quetzel resides here seasonally. The mammals of Monteverde include representatives from both North and South America as endemic species.  After your tour we will make a stop at the hummingbird garden. At the end of the tour, you will be brought back to your hotel. Includes Reserve entrance fees, naturalist guide, transportation to and from the reserve.

Described by National Geographic as “the jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves,” Monteverde is a paradise for nature lovers. More orchids grow here than anywhere else in the world, it is home to 58 species of amphibians, and nearly a hundred unique species of birds migrate through the area annually. Roughly 4,600 feet above sea level, the climate is typically humid, misty and windy, creating a rarefied atmosphere, somewhat mystical in feeling. Today, enjoy some time at leisure to relax at your lodge or set out to explore the land, declared in 2007 to be one of Costa Rica’s Seven Wonders.

  • Robert Z — November 07, 2017 — Central America

Sarah Roberts was fantastic, very available and responsive. Drivers and guides were all top rated, knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. The Springs hotel in La Fortunate was great!

  • Natalie D — November 07, 2017 — Central America

The trip was amazing. The itinerary worked out great. Kensington has always made an effort to have a representative meet with us upon arrival and go over the itinerary and discuss any matters we had questions about.Fabian was a very nice man and was attentive after our meeting. Our primary driver was Javier who was always pleasant and a joy to be with. Our primary guide was Marcos Jimenez. He was an excellent ambassador for Kensington and represented you very well. He was the consummate professional and was always very attentive and accommodating with us. In its entirety, Kensington organized a great trip that I would recommend to anyone. Thank you again for all of your help in planning this adventure.

  • Robert Riordan — May 23, 2017 — Central America

The guides were key. Very knowledgeable and fun. They were very attuned to the level of exertion we could handle. Thanks to your eagle-eyed guides, we saw such a diversity of plants, birds and animals -- which we could never have spotted on our own. Great memories!

  • Angela Watson — May 23, 2017 — Central America

We had a wonderful time on our trip to Costa Rica. Our guides Francisco and Bernie both exceeded our expectations. They were able to answer any question we had on subjects that ranged from culture and customs to environment, ecology and much more. During our afternoons in the rainforest we were able to see a multitude of birds, two toed and three toed sloths, Congo and Capuchin monkeys, eyelash vipers, and all of the rainforest scenery. We came away with an understanding of the forest and its inhabitants and real respect for our guides who work hard to preserve the natural beauty of their country through preservation and ensuring responsible tourism. We couldn't be happier with any portion of our trip. It really was wonderful.
