Worth a visit on their own, Panama and Costa Rica are all the more dynamic when enjoyed as a pair. This nature-focused itinerary takes you deep into the wilderness of two of our planet’s most biodiverse nations, brings you up close to incredible feats of engineering, and gets you face-to-beak with some of the world’s most elusive birds with plenty of time to recover from it all on some of the finest beaches anywhere.

It starts in bustling and sophisticated Panama City. Get to know the Panamanian capital a little better on a series of immersive tours that highlight the country’s birth and the construction of its most famous attraction: the immense Panama Canal. Expert researchers and historians will be with you every step of the way to add color and detail, as well as to provide insight into the human impact on the environment in one of the world’s most fragile bioregions.

Next, leave the city behind and head west to Boquete, a natural paradise particularly beloved by birdwatchers. More than 1,000 unique species of bird have been spotted in the Chiriquí Highlands, and with a little luck, you may even get the chance to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal, famed for its iridescent green plumage.

Last stop: Costa Rica and the Osa Peninsula. Once described as “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by no less an authority than National Geographic, the peninsula is believed to host more than half of Costa Rica’s wildlife. While you’re here, you’ll have the chance to take a dolphin-watching excursion in the Golfo Dulce, take advantage of the vast network of hiking trails, or relax on the beach in one of the world’s most pristine biodiversity hotspots. ... Day 2: Panama City

Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is his only work in Latin America. Created to tell the story of how the isthmus of Panama rose from the sea, uniting two continents and separating a vast ocean – in the process changing the planet’s biodiversity forever – the Biomuseo’s sprawling property contains eight permanent exhibition galleries crafted by Bruce Mau Design. In addition to the main spaces, the museum includes a public atrium, a space for temporary exhibitions, a shop, a cafe, and multiple outdoor exhibits throughout the botanical park. Located on the Amador Causeway, a prominent area at the entrance to the Panama Canal in the Pacific Ocean, the Biomuseo also affords excellent views of the city skyline, the historic district, Ancon Hill, and the Bridge of the Americas. After visiting the museum, continue with your guide to Casco Antiguo, Panama City’s most historic district. Here, you’ll step back in time to admire the lovely colonial houses, narrow roads and impressive churches in this vibrant quarter while learning of Panama’s early history, then join your awaiting driver who will return you to your hotel.

Day 4: Panama City

Barro Colorado is an island in Lake Gatun and has been declared a National Monument. Protected from harmful influences, the flora and fauna of Barro Colorado remains unspoiled and has become an important research facility for scientists. After a 45-minute transfer from Panama City to Gamboa, continue by boat to Barro Colorado. On the boat ride, dense jungle surrounds and huge container vessels transit through the canal. Before arriving to the island your guide will give some information about natural history and prepare the group for the walk along the trail, a hike which typically takes between two and three hours to complete. Ending at the Visitor Center, you will find an exhibition regarding Barro Colorado National Monument here, and after the Visitors Center, will head to the cafeteria for lunch. This is a cafeteria-style lunch with a variety of dishes, including a vegetarian section, since many of the scientists that live and work at Barro Colorado are vegetarian. After lunch, there will be time to ask questions and relax. Later in the day, you will board a boat departing for Gamboa and there, board a private vehicle which will return you to your hotel.

Day 6: Boquete

Panama is one of the favorite destinations for birding but birding in Panama is not complete unless you visit the Highlands of Boquete. As noted in Robert S. Ridgley’s A Guide to The Birds of Panama, Finca Lerida is the ideal place to go “searching for quetzals and other specialties.” A unique collection of over 1,600 birds have been documented in the vicinity of Lerida by its previous owner Mr. Tollef B. Monniche, specimens of which have been donated to the Birds Department of Zoology in the Field Museum of Chicago. Finca Lerida has a network of professionally-designed trails frequented by avid birdwatchers looking to see the Resplendent Quetzal, and by those interested in the magnificent flora and fauna within the highlands. Alongside an expert guide set out to discover the songs, calls and diverse beauty of the birds in Boquete.

Afterwards you will continue to the entrance of the Quetzal Trail and enjoy a lovely picnic lunch amid the lush vegetation. After lunch, continue to "Mi Jardin, Tu Jardin" - a botanical garden with a wide variety of tropical plants. Here you’ll receive a short introduction to Boquete's most popular export: Coffee. Your guide will explain you everything about the brown beans and you will also taste a few different roasts. After the coffee experience, head downhill to the hot springs of Caldera, approximately 30 minutes from Boquete. Relax at the natural hot springs, then take a swim in the cold Caldera River for a change; it is quite the sensory experience. After the tour you will be taken back to your hotel.

  • Donald N — May 30, 2019 — Central America

Everything was first class and all transportation was on time and professional. Very good tour guide who was very knowledgeable and personable. I would love to take more tours through Kensington Tours.

  • Candice J — May 05, 2019 — Central America

AMAZING!!! My husband and I went to Costa Rica to celebrate his 40th birthday. Our trip was FLAWLESS. From the moment our guide, Carlos picked us up at the airport we were completely carefree. I can't say enough great things about Carlos. He accompanied us for 3 days in Arenal. He is an excellent driver, teacher, guide, etc. We learned more about Costa Rica than we ever planned to learn. He was punctual, attentive, and had a great sense of humor. I was originally concerned about safety, BUT those concerns quickly faded after our arrival. I have recommended Kensington tours to 5 other friends in the past few weeks and we are already planning our next trip. If you want an enjoyable, carefree, hassle-free vacation- USE KENSINGTON TOURS.

  • Monica A — February 02, 2019 — Central America

We had a wonderful time. Our tour guides Jay and Dennis were both exceptionally knowledgeable and courteous. We learned so much! Barbara, our rep did a lovely job of picking out the right tours and hotels for us. I hope to use Kensington Tours again as I like the way that the tours are private and can be customized. For us, because we are seniors who want to go at a slower pace (and don't want to be herded around in a large group), that is very important.

  • William D — February 08, 2019 — Central America

This was a wonderful trip. Knowledgeable and fun to be with guides, excellent accommodations, and a really patient and attentive trip planner made this bucket list trip come true. This was not an easy trip to plan or execute and you pulled it off amazingly.

  • Richard A. — January 04, 2019 — Central America

We had a great vacation and would definitely return to Costa Rica!

  • Beth D. — May 22, 2018 — Central America

Our trip to Costa Rica couldn't have been more perfect! Everything and everyone was on time and ran smoothly. We will definitely use Kensington Tours again!

  • Carol R. — March 15, 2018 — Central America

Our guides in Costa Rica were knowledgeable and very accommodating.

  • Christopher B. — December 28, 2018 — Central America

Costa Rica was magical in every way...the hotels were spectacular and beyond our expectations! The tours - the chocolate experience, the coffee plantation, the lunch at the volcano (WOW!), the birthday dinner at El Silencio and the chef at Punta Islita - were all terrific! The trip was perfect, definitely a Kensington experience and will be forever etched in our memory!

  • Courtney S. — April 16, 2018 — Central America

Every guide assigned to us were professional, warm and knowledgeable (especially Gabriel, Juan Carlo, Pablo and Wilbur). The accommodations were attractive and clean with great service & delicious food. The excursions were perfectly scheduled in duration and were as described in the itinerary.

  • Sandra N. — August 13, 2018 — Central America

Our Arenal guide, Marcos Jinemiz, was particularly outstanding. Jasdiel, our guide at the Don Juan coffee plantation was also outstanding.
