Day 2: Antigua

Antigua is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas. A captivating town, it feels as though time stopped here 300 years ago. On this walking tour you will visit the Central Plaza and discover the main Spanish-Baroque influenced buildings in the town which include El Portal, Palacio de Capitanes, and Antigua Cathedral. Carrying onward, the tour will take you through the locally-popular Tanque La Union, the San Francisco Church (used in the 1935 classic film, The New Adventures of Tarzan), the picturesque 5th Avenue and will conclude at La Merced, a baroque church founded in 1767. This service includes a bilingual guide as well as entrance fees.

Antigua is famous for growing some of the best coffee beans in Central America. Enjoy the scenery as you receive insights into the cultivation, roasting, and preparation of coffee at an authentic Antiguan coffee hacienda. This tour brings you up close and personal with the whole coffee making process, experiencing the smells, the sights, and flavors of one of the Guatemala’s most famous exports. This service includes transportation, guide, and entrance fees.

Following a short tuk-tuk transfer to La Casa del Ron (the House of Rum), you will be welcomed to taste two of the world's most highly regarded rums; Zacapa Centenario and XO Zacapa. Both are first-class Guatemalan liquors made from virgin sugar cane honey. Zacapa Centenario is aged for more than two decades before serving and received 97 points (out of 100) from the Beverage Tasting Institute, as well as a Gold Medal at the 2007 International Cane Spirits Festival. XO Zacapa has aged anywhere from six to 25 years and has an extra stage in the aging process where the spirit is stored in French oak barrels that previously contained cognac, and received an impressive 95 points from the Beverage Tasting Institute. During this tour, you will learn about the distillation and aging process before being returned to your hotel.  This service includes transportation, guide, and entrance fees.

Day 3: Antigua

First, you will be transferred to San Miguel Escobar via private vehicle where you will participate in an exciting cooking class with a Guatemalan family. On the menu today is "Pepian," the national dish of Guatemala, which is a mouth-watering chicken stew made with different types of native chilis, seeds, and vegetables; but fear not, it's not overly spicy. Along with a demonstration on how to prepare hand-crafted tortillas, this traditional cooking course, prepared over an open fire, will take three to four hours to complete. Oh yes, you'll need to "prepare" the chicken too, and it is not store bought!

Includes: Transportation, guide, cooking ingredients, lunch.

The word cacao originates from the Maya word ka'kau' and they believed that it was discovered by the gods in a faraway mountain. Around 900 AD, the Mayans determined that these beans could be crushed and turned into a bitter though intoxicating liquid. From this original drink which also included chili peppers and corn meal (the Mayan’s did not have sugar), myriad chocolate treats have been created. In a small chocolate factory located in San Juan El Obispo, a family still produces handcrafted chocolates using age-old Mayan techniques passed down through the generations. Here you will learn about the ancient techniques for preparing Mayan chocolate and sample a few of these delights before returning to your hotel.  This service includes transportation, guide, and entrance fees.

Upon arrival, your guide will take you through this colorful town, highlighting points of interest including Iglesia de Santo Tomas, a centuries-old church located in the market square. Your guide will detail the history of this important and iconic monument for the indigenous peoples in the area. You will have also be provided a list of produce to be purchased from local vendors. After this is completed, you will carry on to your hotel in Lake Atitlan where a local Mayan chef will teach you how to prepare a traditional dish with the goods purchased in Chichicastenango. This service includes transportation, guide, produce, and cooking course.

The trip was amazing. The itinerary worked out great. Kensington has always made an effort to have a representative meet with us upon arrival and go over the itinerary and discuss any matters we had questions about.Fabian was a very nice man and was attentive after our meeting. Our primary driver was Javier who was always pleasant and a joy to be with. Our primary guide was Marcos Jimenez. He was an excellent ambassador for Kensington and represented you very well. He was the consummate professional and was always very attentive and accommodating with us. In its entirety, Kensington organized a great trip that I would recommend to anyone. Thank you again for all of your help in planning this adventure.

We had a wonderful time on our trip to Costa Rica. Our guides Francisco and Bernie both exceeded our expectations. They were able to answer any question we had on subjects that ranged from culture and customs to environment, ecology and much more. During our afternoons in the rainforest we were able to see a multitude of birds, two toed and three toed sloths, Congo and Capuchin monkeys, eyelash vipers, and all of the rainforest scenery. We came away with an understanding of the forest and its inhabitants and real respect for our guides who work hard to preserve the natural beauty of their country through preservation and ensuring responsible tourism. We couldn't be happier with any portion of our trip. It really was wonderful.
