Day 2: Leon

Explore the fascinating history of one of Nicaragua’s most influential cities by foot. Considered to be Nicaragua’s historical, cultural, and religious capital, Leon was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt due to volcanic activities, ransacked by pirates, and again rebuilt. It would go on to win in its struggle to be the most important city in Nicaragua against Managua, but would eventually give way to its southern neighbor. On this insightful walking tour, you will visit revolutionary murals, baroque and neoclassical churches and an art museum displaying works by internationally renowned artists. You will also visit a local market, colonial buildings, and Nicaragua’s first university. Finally, you will climb to the rooftop of Central America’s largest cathedral, registered on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites, to enjoy the astonishing views over the city and surrounding Maribios Volcanic Chain.

Includes: Guide, entrance fees, beverage.

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 3: Leon - Granada

Today you will head south towards Granada. Along the way, you will visit various sites in Masaya and the White Villages, and enjoy a lunch overlooking the impressive Apoyo Lagoon.

Following a two hour morning transfer, the tour begins at Masaya Volcano National Park where your driver will bring you to the summit of the volcano, stopping to allow you to peek inside the active crater. Next you will tour Masaya's artisan market, where you will find a wide range of quality Nicaraguan handicrafts including pine-needle baskets, art, pottery and woodcrafts, all prepared by local artists and artisans. Before heading to the last stop of the tour, the Pueblos Blancos, a tasty lunch is served at the marvelous Apoyo Lagoon. San Juan de Oriente, one of the so-called White Villages, is the last destination. In this centuries-old town, founded in 1585, you will watch and learn as local artisans produce beautiful ceramics out of clay; an age old tradition that this town specializes in. Following your time in the White Villages, you will be transferred to your hotel in Granada.

Includes: Transportation, guide, entrance fees, lunch.

Accommodation: Plaza Colon (4*)

Day 4: Granada

Situated at the foot of the Mombacho Volcano is Las Isletas de Granada, a beautiful archipelago of roughly 360 small forest-covered islands which were formed by a volcanic eruption 20,000 years ago. To begin this tour, you will first be transferred to the nearby harbor where you will meet your captain and board a motorboat. Once aboard and cruising, your guide will point out the wide array of exotic flora and fauna as you tour through the islets, and you will also discuss the local community that lives on the islands year round. Along the way, you will stop at one of the islets to enjoy a complimentary drink before heading back to the mainland.

Includes: Transportation (overland and aquatic), guide, entrance fees, beverage.

No visit to Granada is complete without a tour of the city's historic center. Founded by the Spanish in 1524, Granada is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. On this guided tour, travel both on foot and by horse-drawn carriage to explore interesting sites including San Francisco Church and the nearby San Francisco Convent, built in 1529. You will also visit the Merced Church and have the rare, likely fleeting, opportunity to climb the bell tower and enjoy spectacular views of the city, Lake Nicaragua, and Mombacho Volcano. To conclude the tour, you will visit the oldest part of the city to explore the Xalteva Church and the ancient city walls.

Includes: Transportation by horse-drawn carriage, guide, entrance fees.

Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve is a cloud forest with a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife. After being shuttled to the top of the crater via private vehicle, you will make a brief visit to the local research station before participating in a tour of the impressive natural surroundings during a guided hike. The well-kept crater trail (one mile in length) traverses the dense cloud forest around the crater. You can enjoy the views of Granada, Las Isletas, the Apoyo Lagoon and the Masaya volcano. Be sure to keep an eye out for the howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, and the endemic Mombacho Salamander.

Includes: Transportation by truck, local guide, entrance fees, coffee, bottled water.

Upon arrival, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel. Total travel time is approximately three and a half hours.

Natural marvels and ancient relics are featured on this private tour of Ometepe Island. The starting point is Finca Magdalena, a community farm that holds a secret. What secret? In the area around the finca, several rock carvings can be found. You will participate in a short tour of this area while you learn of the island’s history and study these fascinating petroglyphs. Next you will visit and learn about the mystical Charco Verde lagoon, surrounded by lush wildlife and many species endemic to the region. Your guide will introduce you to the natural wonders of this reserve, and explain the legend of "Chico Largo," a small hill in the area with eerie myths surrounding it. Next, you will continue onward to Ojo de Agua, a water source situated near the lakeside. Here you can take a swim in the natural pool and enjoy the popular cocktail "Coco Loco", followed by an optional visit to a nearby museum that features pre-Columbian artifacts as well as well-conserved indigenous statues and ceramics.

  • Robert Riordan — May 23, 2017 — Central America

The guides were key. Very knowledgeable and fun. They were very attuned to the level of exertion we could handle. Thanks to your eagle-eyed guides, we saw such a diversity of plants, birds and animals -- which we could never have spotted on our own. Great memories!

  • Angela Watson — May 23, 2017 — Central America

We had a wonderful time on our trip to Costa Rica. Our guides Francisco and Bernie both exceeded our expectations. They were able to answer any question we had on subjects that ranged from culture and customs to environment, ecology and much more. During our afternoons in the rainforest we were able to see a multitude of birds, two toed and three toed sloths, Congo and Capuchin monkeys, eyelash vipers, and all of the rainforest scenery. We came away with an understanding of the forest and its inhabitants and real respect for our guides who work hard to preserve the natural beauty of their country through preservation and ensuring responsible tourism. We couldn't be happier with any portion of our trip. It really was wonderful.

  • Alicia H. — August 10, 2016 — Central America

The guides in Arenal and Manuel Antonio were excellent and the Pacuare river rafting excursion in Arenal was awesome. It was an excellent break from winter in February!

  • Kay W. — June 15, 2016 — Central America

All of the drivers arrived early. Vans were very nice. Drivers were courteous. Tours were great.

  • Alice H. — May 19, 2016 — Central America

The guide in Monteverde was excellent!!!!

  • Amy G. — May 19, 2016 — Central America

I've already passed on the name of my trip planner to friends that are looking to go to Costa Rica. Working with Brandi was invaluable.

  • Kristen E. — May 19, 2016 — Central America

Everyone was amazing! We were able to do local activities with our tour guides and they were all very accommodating and great.

  • Margaret H. — May 19, 2016 — Central America

Beautiful hotels with very friendly helpful staff, and very passionate guides keen to show off their heritage to us, of which they are rightly proud. I think having higher end hotels pays off in terms of personal attention and there was nothing I would have changed. At the Turtle Inn we felt like part of a family which was pretty special. I'd do it all again!

  • Collin B. — May 18, 2016 — Central America

Our trip went extremely well. Everything from pick-ups to transfers to accommodations and tours went as smooth as silk. Everybody was prompt and courteous and very friendly. Small changes while in country were happily accommodated. We would highly recommend Kensington Tours to our friends and family.

  • Doug N. — May 18, 2016 — Central America

Thanks to all the in country staff for helping me to change one activity just a few days prior to the event. I would also recommend all of my guides, but especially Marcela in Monteverde and Barbara in Manuel Antonio.
