Cosmopolitan cities, glorious Caribbean beaches, lush natural spaces, and remarkably preserved colonial architecture await in Panama and Colombia, two of Central America’s best-kept secrets. Designed for travelers eager to experience the next big thing before word gets around, this stylish itinerary combines the very best of these under-the-radar destinations into an experience that will stay with you for years to come.

It all starts in Panama City, one of Central America’s most sophisticated capitals. Once you’re settled, join your private guide for an exploration of Biomuseo, the fascinating Frank Gehry-designed natural history museum, before exploring the historic Casco Viejo (also known as Casco Antiguo) district, home to cobblestone streets, stately colonial homes, and grand churches. Before moving on, you’ll also have the chance to contrast Panama’s future with its past on a visit to the Agua Clara Locks and Portobelo, a seaside village built around the ruins of a 17th-century Spanish port.

Next stop: Medellín. Once synonymous with the violent drug trade, this gorgeous city nestled amid the Aburrá Valley has reimagined itself as one of Latin America’s most dynamic and forward-thinking cities. You’ll witness its stunning transformation on a visit to vibrant Comuna 13 where, with a private guide, you’ll experience the explosion of art and culture that has enlivened one of the city’s most infamous districts. Beauty blossoms later in the small town of Santa Elena where you’ll visit a local flower farm famed for its elaborate silleta floral arrangements. Later on, travel back in time to the 19th century in Santa Fe de Antioquia, a charming colonial town that was once the regional capital. ... Show More »

Bidding a fond adiós to Medellín, the journey moves north to the edge of the Caribbean Sea and the beautiful Rosario Islands. Up here, you’ll have the chance to snorkel and relax on the grounds of a secluded island resort before visiting romantic Cartagena, the “Venice of Colombia.” On a private walking tour, you’ll delve deep into the city’s alluring culture and history before being treated to an exclusive rum and chocolate tasting at the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena. Later, record your passage through this beautiful UNESCO-protected city with the help of a professional photographer on a private tour of Cartagena’s colonial architecture before strolling its stylish bars, exquisite restaurants, and gorgeous plazas on your own.

Accommodation: La Concordia

Located in a well-attended corner in Avenida Central, between the districts of Santa Ana and San Felipe, La Concordia lives in an iconic building that has hosted an array of local businesses and institutions since the 19th century, all while being surrounded by local shops and the humble but strident activities of Panama’s new relocated city, including its churches, government buildings and the houses of Panama’s elite. Day 2: Panama City

Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is his only work in Latin America. Created to tell the story of how the isthmus of Panama rose from the sea, uniting two continents and separating a vast ocean – in the process changing the planet’s biodiversity forever – the Biomuseo’s sprawling property contains eight permanent exhibition galleries crafted by Bruce Mau Design. In addition to the main spaces, the museum includes a public atrium, a space for temporary exhibitions, a shop, a cafe, and multiple outdoor exhibits throughout the botanical park. Located on the Amador Causeway, a prominent area at the entrance to the Panama Canal in the Pacific Ocean, the Biomuseo also affords excellent views of the city skyline, the historic district, Ancon Hill, and the Bridge of the Americas. After visiting the museum, continue with your guide to Casco Antiguo, Panama City’s most historic district. Here, you’ll step back in time to admire the lovely colonial houses, narrow roads and impressive churches in this vibrant quarter while learning of Panama’s early history, then join your awaiting driver who will return you to your hotel.

A quaint district, Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is a UNESCO protected region of Panama City. Enclosed by colonial-era houses with fading pastel walls, Casco Antiguo is home to vibrant ventures. Savor a deluxe cup of Geisha coffee at Café Unido inside The American Trade Hotel. Look over ships sailing at the seafront wherein colorful embroidered molas are sold by Kuna women. Step inside Pedro Mandinga boasting vintage interior décor or indulge in rum-packed drinks including Mandinga Mojitos. Head over to Casa Casco and watch as dusk falls over to the city and live music fills the air. End the evening with a superb dinner at Caliope Restaurant, then dance the night away at Teatro Amador.

Day 3: Panama City

After meeting your guide in the morning, set out to the impressive Agua Clara Visitor Center, found on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. Showcasing the Canal's legacy and grandeur, you'll take in an unparalleled view; a sweeping panorama featuring - to one side - Gatun Lake, where cargo ships or other vessels transit every day, and on the other, the expansion work projects. Walking through the center, be sure to visit the Projection Room to gain insights into the harrowing history of the thousands of men and women that worked on the Canal throughout the decades, then take a stroll down the ecological pathway. Lined with a variety of plants that makes the trail an adventure unto itself, see if you're able to identify the different species gathered in the indigenous of the area of the Canal watershed. Later in the day, join your guide and driver as you make your way to the historic port of Portobelo. It was through here that, infamously, Incan and indigenous treasure was ferried across the 15th century, then shipped onward and east over the Atlantic. In addition, Portobelo was the center of control and inspection of goods arriving from Spain. Today, eerie ruins are found in the middle of tropical jungle, the remnants of fortresses, castles and military bases which have been reclaimed by the wild in past years. After exploring Portobelo, your guide and driver will escort you to your awaiting vehicle and begin the return trip to your hotel in Panama City.

This social development tour of Medellin provides you with a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant Comuna 13 district and witness the miraculous transformation of what was once one of the country’s most troubled neighborhoods (“barrios”). In the past, Comuna 13 barrio was considered one of the most violent communities in Medellin's history. Today, the neighborhood showcases phenomenal transformation which has come about by way of innovative, determined social and urban planning by the local government and private investors. The success of Comuna 13’s ambitious makeover can serve as an inspiration and model for troubled and neglected communities around the world. Community leaders from the local organization Casa Kolacho guide you through the streets and pathways of this unique community. Their work with local artists encourage a message of unity through education and participation in performance arts including hip-hop, graffiti, break-dancing, and DJ’ing. Day 5: Medellin

Santa Elena, a small town nestled high in the mountains outside of Medellin, is one of Colombia’s hidden gems. Popular among locals and international guests interested in horticulture, this small village is one of the world’s top producers of tropical and local flowers and is also the birthplace of "silletas", ornate floral arrangements that are featured prominently throughout the annual Flower Festival (or Feria de los Flores, held throughout August annually). With a cooler climate (relative to the area), nutrient-rich soils and a community dedicated to growing beautiful specimens, it is no wonder the town has become internationally renowned. This morning you’ll meet your private guide in the lobby of your hotel and board an awaiting vehicle to begin the short drive to Santa Elena. After rising into the mountains, you’ll arrive at a local flower farm where awaiting members of the family will tour you through the grounds, introducing you to the incredible variety of vibrant, fragrant flora while detailing best-practices to ensure their unique crops grow healthily. After exploring the farm, you will see how silletas are prepared and participate in creating one of these unique floral tapestries. Following the workshop, join your guide and driver for the return transfer to your hotel in Medellin.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 6: Medellin

You will be met at your hotel by your English speaking guide and taken directly to Santa Fe de Antioquia for your full day tour of the town, a journey of approximately 2 hours to reach Santa Fe. Set in a lush low lying hot and sultry valley on the banks of the Rio Cauca, Santa Fe de Antioquia is the oldest settlement in the region. The town has kept much of its Colonial charm, the narrow streets and whitewashed colonial style buildings many of which with large central courtyard in which to relax away from the midday heat. The central plaza is dominated by the principal church of the town. The plaza is also home to a daily market where vendors sell various varieties of Tamarind product that grow locally, take a tour of the stalls and try a few samples of this local delicacy. There are several other churches and important colonial buildings to visit but the greatest pleasure is simply exploring the narrow streets infused with history of the region. As an additional side trip you can take a "Moto" or covered motor bike taxi down to the Cauca River to see the famous suspension bridge, said to be the oldest in the Americas. You will arrive back to Medellin late afternoon.

Included: private transportation, English speaking guide, lunch, entrances.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
