Stepping into the limelight at last, Panama is quickly developing a reputation as Central America’s must-visit destination. There’s (much) more on offer here than just the 40-mile (64-kilometer) canal that reshaped the world over a century ago. This enchanting adventure bridges the country’s two brightest spots – dynamic Panama City and the sun-splashed coast of Chiriquí – into a postcard-perfect blend of urban delights and all-natural pleasure.

We begin in Panama City, the cosmopolitan and strikingly beautiful capital. Often compared to Miami and Hong Kong, it’s a fascinating city blessed with colonial charm, modern glitz, and incredible scenery, as you’ll discover on a private half-day guided tour of the historic Casco Viejo district that ends with a delightful sunset cocktail hour at a top restaurant. Later, witness the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal on a private tour of the Agua Clara Locks and the Punta Galeta Marine Laboratory, a Smithsonian-affiliated research facility dedicated to the study of the Caribbean’s tropical ecosystems.

Next, the journey heads west to the town of David, your entry point to secluded Boca Chica. Tucked away on the shores of the Gulf of Chiriquí lies Isla Palenque, your exclusive island home for the next few nights. From a deluxe beachfront casita (small cottage) perched just 50 feet (15 meters) from pristine beach and the calm waters of the Pacific, you’ll have the chance to take advantage of everything this Caribbean paradise has to offer. Snorkel or scuba dive, take part in a whale-watching encounter, unwind with a yoga session on the beach, or just soak up the sun; the choice is yours, and the enveloping splendor of Isla Palenque’s natural surroundings makes going home the most challenging part of the trip. ... After a reluctant goodbye to your casita, you’ll return to Panama City for one more night to soak up the atmosphere before returning home refreshed, renewed, and ready to return.

Day 1: Panama City

To ensure your comfort, an English-speaking guide will be waiting for you outside of Customs, holding a sign with your name on it. This representative will direct you to your awaiting vehicle and driver, and accompany you to your hotel to assist with check-in.

Accommodation: La Concordia

Located in a well-attended corner in Avenida Central, between the districts of Santa Ana and San Felipe, La Concordia lives in an iconic building that has hosted an array of local businesses and institutions since the 19th century, all while being surrounded by local shops and the humble but strident activities of Panama’s new relocated city, including its churches, government buildings and the houses of Panama’s elite. Day 2: Panama City

A quaint district, Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is a UNESCO protected region of Panama City. Enclosed by colonial-era houses with fading pastel walls, Casco Antiguo is home to vibrant ventures. Savor a deluxe cup of Geisha coffee at Café Unido inside The American Trade Hotel. Look over ships sailing at the seafront wherein colorful embroidered molas are sold by Kuna women. Step inside Pedro Mandinga boasting vintage interior décor or indulge in rum-packed drinks including Mandinga Mojitos. Head over to Casa Casco and watch as dusk falls over to the city and live music fills the air. End the evening with a superb dinner at Caliope Restaurant, then dance the night away at Teatro Amador.

In the late afternoon, join your guide in the hotel lobby and head to Casco Antiguo, Panama City’s colonial quarter. Step back in time as you walk through this district, surrounded by colonial houses, narrow avenues and impressive churches. Focusing on Panama’s early history, your guide will delve into the background of both the city and country as you explore its many sites of interest. With over three centuries of history, you’ll discover firsthand why Casco Antiguo was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and – as the sun sets and casts a golden light over Plaza de Francia and the Metropolitan Cathedral – take in the outstanding architecture as locals begin to take to the street, bringing to a whole new dimension to this dynamic barrio. Soon you’ll settle in for a well-earned cocktail at Numen Gastro-Lounge, a rooftop establishment found atop La Concordia hotel. After your refreshment, you will be returned to your hotel.

Walking through the center, be sure to visit the Projection Room to gain insights into the harrowing history of the thousands of men and women that worked on the Canal throughout the decades, then take a stroll down the ecological pathway. Lined with a variety of plants that makes the trail an adventure unto itself, see if you're able to identify the different species gathered in the indigenous of the area of the Canal watershed. Later in the day, set out to visit Galeta Point Marine Laboratory. In operation since 1964, researchers here study “the investigation of urban and industrial encroachment on coastal ecosystems in the tropics.” With our private guide leading the way, tour Galeta Point Marine Laboratory and learn about the critical studies underway here to ensure this unique mangrove ecosystems continues to thrive into the future.

Accommodation: Isla Palenque

Robinson Crusoe by Joseph Conrad; this was the book that spurred Benjamin Loomis to live on a tropical island. For the last five years, Ben has lived on Isla Palenque — frequently sleeping in a beachfront hammock — completely enamored by this place and its rich, mysterious history. Isla Palenque was home to an ancient, pre-Columbian community. Indigenous tribes called it “Palenque,” meaning sanctuary. Hundreds of years later, the island continued to exist as a secluded preserve for rare primary forest and hundreds of species of plants, flowers, animals, and birds. Taken by this rare and wondrous place, Ben used his knowledge as an architect and design-builder to develop the island resort, taking care to maintain the extraordinary spirit that he discovered here. From the design to the furniture to the Secrets of the Island Tour — and even the Casita themselves — you will feel Ben’s reverence for the island. Today, Isla Palenque is a sanctuary for curious travelers who seek an idyllic beachfront and rainforest destination of natural beauty and ancient history. As a luxury island resort with eight modern Casitas and a Villa Estate, it is the first of its kind in Panama. Welcome to the wonderful world of Isla Palenque. It’s right out of a page of your favorite fantasy island novel. Isla Palenque Resort is a proud member of the Cayuga Collection of Sustainable Luxury Hotels & Lodges. Through its environmental awareness efforts and sustainability programs, Isla Palenque represents a new generation of hoteliers leading the way for intelligent luxury travel.

Day 6: Boca Chica

August through October brings humpback whales to the Gulf of Chiriquí.  To the warm protected waters surrounding Isla Palenque, whales migrate in order to give birth and spend a few months teaching their little ones the ways of the ocean. As the season progresses, the babies show off their new skills – humpbacks can be spotted breaching and putting on magnificent shows. Dolphins often tag along as well. Witness these incredible creatures, twice the size of the boat, from as close as 30 feet away. This excursion requires at least two guests to operate and accommodates a maximum of eight. Please note: This excursion is only offered from late August to early October.

  • Donald N — May 30, 2019 — Central America

Everything was first class and all transportation was on time and professional. Very good tour guide who was very knowledgeable and personable. I would love to take more tours through Kensington Tours.

  • Candice J — May 05, 2019 — Central America

AMAZING!!! My husband and I went to Costa Rica to celebrate his 40th birthday. Our trip was FLAWLESS. From the moment our guide, Carlos picked us up at the airport we were completely carefree. I can't say enough great things about Carlos. He accompanied us for 3 days in Arenal. He is an excellent driver, teacher, guide, etc. We learned more about Costa Rica than we ever planned to learn. He was punctual, attentive, and had a great sense of humor. I was originally concerned about safety, BUT those concerns quickly faded after our arrival. I have recommended Kensington tours to 5 other friends in the past few weeks and we are already planning our next trip. If you want an enjoyable, carefree, hassle-free vacation- USE KENSINGTON TOURS.

  • Monica A — February 02, 2019 — Central America

We had a wonderful time. Our tour guides Jay and Dennis were both exceptionally knowledgeable and courteous. We learned so much! Barbara, our rep did a lovely job of picking out the right tours and hotels for us. I hope to use Kensington Tours again as I like the way that the tours are private and can be customized. For us, because we are seniors who want to go at a slower pace (and don't want to be herded around in a large group), that is very important.

  • William D — February 08, 2019 — Central America

This was a wonderful trip. Knowledgeable and fun to be with guides, excellent accommodations, and a really patient and attentive trip planner made this bucket list trip come true. This was not an easy trip to plan or execute and you pulled it off amazingly.

  • Richard A. — January 04, 2019 — Central America

We had a great vacation and would definitely return to Costa Rica!

  • Beth D. — May 22, 2018 — Central America

Our trip to Costa Rica couldn't have been more perfect! Everything and everyone was on time and ran smoothly. We will definitely use Kensington Tours again!

  • Carol R. — March 15, 2018 — Central America

Our guides in Costa Rica were knowledgeable and very accommodating.

  • Christopher B. — December 28, 2018 — Central America

Costa Rica was magical in every way...the hotels were spectacular and beyond our expectations! The tours - the chocolate experience, the coffee plantation, the lunch at the volcano (WOW!), the birthday dinner at El Silencio and the chef at Punta Islita - were all terrific! The trip was perfect, definitely a Kensington experience and will be forever etched in our memory!

  • Courtney S. — April 16, 2018 — Central America

Every guide assigned to us were professional, warm and knowledgeable (especially Gabriel, Juan Carlo, Pablo and Wilbur). The accommodations were attractive and clean with great service & delicious food. The excursions were perfectly scheduled in duration and were as described in the itinerary.

  • Sandra N. — August 13, 2018 — Central America

Our Arenal guide, Marcos Jinemiz, was particularly outstanding. Jasdiel, our guide at the Don Juan coffee plantation was also outstanding.
