Day 8: Cairo

Cairo and the surrounding area around the Nile have been inhabited for millennia, and the heart of old Cairo is still home to a host of ancient ruins telling the story the Persians and the early emergence of Christianity. With your private guide and driver, head to the remains of the Babylon Fortress, originally constructed by the Persians around the 6th-century BC. These ruins are the city of Cairo’s oldest original structure – while the pyramids are older, they are in nearby Giza. Within the confines of the Fortress of Babylon are a number of important Coptic Christian Churches, including the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus Church, also known as Abu Serga, constructed on the spot where the Holy Family is reported to have rested at during the end of their journey into Egypt. Visit the Hanging Church, one of the oldest churches in Egypt. Its nave is suspended over a passage and the church was the seat of the Coptic Pope for centuries after it was relocated from Alexandria following the Muslim conquest of Egypt. See the Church of Saint Barbara, a long-lasting example of ancient Coptic architecture commemorating a 4th-century local saint. End the day with a visit to the Coptic Museum which houses the largest collection of Egyptian Christian artifacts in the world and important examples of Coptic art.

Relax and enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant, including a choice of a small bottle of water, soft drink, tea or coffee.

As the day draws to a close, Cairo’s Khan Khalili Bazaar becomes a vibrant scene: a maze of shops lined with souvenirs and antiques, restaurants and coffee shops, workshops, mosques, and food vendors. The sights and sounds intermingle in an enchanting display over wafting aromas of freshly baked bread and roasting meats. Stroll down Al Moaz Street with your private guide, and marvel at the largest concentration of medieval architectural treasures from the Islamic world. Discover with your guide how the massive façade was constructed. Continue to Luxor Temple which was once joined to the Temples of Karnak by a 1.25-mile-long Avenue of Sphinx, a portion of which marks the entrance to the temple. Day 10: Luxor

Some of the most spectacular sites in all of Egypt can be found on the West Bank of the Nile, near Luxor. Meet with your private guide and driver to spend a half day exploring the West Bank of the Nile, home to the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. Start with a visit to the Valley of the Kings to explore the famous Tomb of Tutankhamun along with two other interesting tombs. King Tut became Pharaoh at the tender age of nine or ten, and the discovery of his nearly intact tomb in 1922 fascinated the world. For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the kings and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt). Explore the recently renovated mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the second historically confirmed female Pharaoh. She is generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful Pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty, and remembered as the first great woman in history of whom we are informed. Next head to the nearby Valley of the Queens, where the wives of Pharaohs were buried during the 18th through 20th Dynasties. End the visit to the West Bank with a visit to the Colossi of Memnon, the only remaining monuments of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

The tomb of Nefertari is arguably the most beautiful and well-preserved tomb in all of Luxor and has even been called the Sistine Chapel of Ancient Egypt. Following its discovery, the tomb was closed to the public in 1950 due to threats to the paintings and required restoration work. Today, access is restricted to an exclusive 100 visitors per day by special permit and included during your visit. Nefertari was Ramessess II’s favorite wife, and the tomb is primarily focused on the Queen’s life and her death. The well-preserved paintings in her tomb are the most detailed source discovered of the ancient Egyptian’s journey towards the afterlife.

Note: only 100 visitors are allowed per day.

The tomb of Seti I (Sethos I) is the longest (at more than 120 meters), deepest and most completely finished in the Valley of the Kings. Recently re-opened, being closed for public visit for years, the tomb is located in a small lateral wadi in the Valley of the Kings. Entering into Seti I’s tomb, you will capture the spirit of discovery of the archeologists as you explore one of Egypt’s most treasured and rare experiences.

In the afternoon return south to Dendarah Temple dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love, fertility and beauty. Dendarah was one of the most ancient and most famous Egyptian cities.

Day 13: Aswan - Cairo

The impressive Aswan High Dam was a marvel of engineering when it was constructed. Originally conceived to Egypt’s irrigation of farmland to mitigate against drought and famine in low-water years, and flooding in high-water years. Visit the dam with your private guide and spend a half day learning about Aswan. The dam displaced over 100,000 Nubians in Sudan and Egypt alike and was part of a major relocation project for archaeological sites under the UNESCO Nubia Campaign, including the Abu Simbel temples and Philae. Other sites were eventually flooded by Lake Nasser, the world’s largest artificial lake that was created by the Aswan High Dam. Then head to Philae and the Temple of Isis on Agilikia Island. Stop at the stone quarries to see the unfinished obelisk, the largest known ancient obelisk and a very good practical demonstration of the methods used by ancient craftsmen to create impressive moments. Marks from workers’ tools are still clearly visible on the bedrock.

I had an amazing opportunity to travel for the first time with my little brother on a trip to Egypt. I was mostly booking through an agency because my brother is a spoiled traveller. In hindsight, I highly recommend you booking through an agency if you go. I used Kensington Tours and could not have been happier. They prepared me for what to expect and were very organized throughout the entire trip. We had a gracious and kind host the entire time who arranged everything. I never even checked into a hotel by myself. I felt so spoiled. If you go, ask to have Osama Soliman. We also had the most amazing driver I have ever witnessed and could not have been more thankful, but it is not a place to rent a car! He was always on time, right where we needed him with full AC, WiFi, a clean car and water! You need Mostafa Khalil as your driver - I promise you that! We had 3 guides depending on where we were and what we were doing, but all of them had been doing tours in English for many years and they were all amazing! We had Hala Kamal - she was our Egyptian mother and tour guide in Cairo...we would not have traded the conversations we had with her for anything. She was welcoming and thoughtful. She gave us as much or as little info we wanted. Also, in Cairo, we had not enough time spent with Mahmoud Ramadan. He was very informative and passionate about his knowledge. In Luxor, our guide was Osama Raslan and I would highly recommend his 23 years of experience as a guide. You are all missing a really amazing experience in Egypt if you don't go...my photos will not do it justice. I am in awe and hope to get a chance to go back again!

The tour, guides, security, driver, accommodations were remarkable in all facets. Specifically, I would like to point out our guide in Cairo/Giza - Hela and our guide in Luxor - Muhammad. There is not enough space here to list all the positives; it lived up to our expectations of a Trip of a Lifetime.

My son and I were extremely pleased with the efficiency and organization of our Kensington tour to Egypt. The accommodations, airport and tour facilitators, drivers, hotel and ship personnel, and knowledgeable tour guides made for an unforgettable experience.

We knew the accommodations would be superb; however, was not expecting the guides to be so well spoken, accommodating, friendly, and above all so educated and knowledgeable in every aspect. They showed a high degree of interest in us and answered every question with enthusiasm and real desire to relate their history and current Egypt. Kudos especially to Ishmiel Gamea. Ermeen Mostafa El-Sissy also showed in-depth knowledge and appreciated our interests.

We have already recommended Kensington Tours to friends who are interested in travelling to Egypt after hearing about our experience. Every portion of our trip was handled in a professional, friendly manner. We are so pleased that we had this opportunity to visit Egypt.

Our guides were one of the most exceptional parts of our trip. Nermeen in Cairo and Ismiel from Aswan to Luxor were outstanding in their knowledge, their professionalism, and their sense of humor, answering every question we posed. They shared their love of their country and it’s ancient history, as well as its culture and present-day issues. Bill and I would not hesitate to recommend Kensington Tours to our friends, thanks to our guides and every other aspect of our experience. Thank you for our “trip of a lifetime”!

I wouldn't have done Egypt any other way! The planning was so easy, Tamara listened to our needs and wants. We were absolutely blown away with our guides, Iman and Mohamed. Iman was so incredibly passionate, she truly brought Egypt alive. Mohamed was highly knowledgeable, but also listened to us and anticipated our needs ahead of time. Kensington really nailed it, and I could not be happier with our trip.

Our guides and drivers were extremely nice, very knowledgeable and had excellent manners. Nermeen and Ahmad went above and beyond their duties, they stop at our request at places to buy local food and coffee for us along the way. They connected with us in a personal level and understood what we were interested in.
