Day 2: Cairo

The Great Pyramids of Giza are the most iconic image of Egyptology and an absolute must-see on any trip to Cairo. Meet with your private guide, driver, and Egyptologist, and head to Giza to discover this marvel and the only surviving site of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Start with a visit to the adjacent Solar Boat Museum, home to the reconstructed Khufu solar ship. Step back from the museum and marvel at the breathtaking scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Pyramids of Giza juxtaposed against the famous Sphinx statue. The sheer beauty and allure of the Sphinx have mystified world travelers the likes of Alexander the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte, an imposing scene against the backdrop of the infinite desert behind it. The mysteries of the Great Pyramids have piqued the curiosity of visitors for thousands of years. Enter the Pyramid of Menkaure, also known as the Mykerinos Pyramid. The smallest of the three major pyramids is believed to date back to the 26th century BC.

Enjoy some of the city's finest cuisine as you stop for lunch. A choice of a soft drink, tea or coffee is included.

One of the most iconic images of Egypt is the sight of a caravan of camels heading out into the desert against the backdrop of the sun setting alongside the stunning Pyramids of Giza. This evening, your private driver will pick you up at your hotel before sunset and transfer you to the desert to meet your trekking guide. Join in a shared desert trek on your choice of camel or horseback and set off into the desert to gaze upon a panoramic view of a dramatic sunset with the Pyramids of Giza as a backdrop. After sunset, stop for your included dinner at Andrea restaurant for an Egyptian meal, then return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Day 3: Cairo

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, also known as the Egyptian Museum, is a veritable treasure trove of Ancient Egypt’s artifacts, with an extensive collection of more than 120,000 items split between its exhibits and storerooms. Delve into the historical background of Egypt on a full day private tour with your Egyptologist guide through the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities, admiring the treasures that are stored here for safekeeping. Tie together the grandeur of Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel with a collection of archaeological finds including statues, jewelry, amulets, sarcophagi, papyrus, ancient coins and the stories of famous Egyptologists. Marvel at the exquisite grandeur of the Mask of Tutankhamun and his coffin – Egypt’s most famous teenage king – although his mummy is still in its original tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Explore the Royal Mummy Hall with your included entrance fee, where some of the world’s most powerful people are now resting, excavated from their tombs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queens.

Relax and enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant, including a choice of a small bottle of water, soft drink, tea or coffee.

As the day draws to a close, Cairo’s Khan Khalili Bazaar becomes a vibrant scene: a maze of shops lined with souvenirs and antiques, restaurants and coffee shops, workshops, mosques, and food vendors. The sights and sounds intermingle in an enchanting display over wafting aromas of freshly baked bread and roasting meats. Stroll down Al Moaz Street with your private guide, and marvel at the largest concentration of medieval architectural treasures from the Islamic world. Opt for an exclusive visit to Beit El Seheimy, an Ottoman-era house transformed into a museum. Normally, this location would be closed to the public during the evening, but this exclusive tour provides access. End the evening with a memorable dinner at the Egyptian restaurant Naguib Mafouz, located in the heart of the bazaar. The restaurant is one of Cairo’s top-rated dining establishments. After dinner, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Luxor is home to one of the world’s greatest open-air museums, with the ruins of Karnak and the Temples of Luxor in easy reach along the East Bank of the city. With your private Egyptologist guide, visit the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the monuments of Karnak and Luxor, learning more about ancient Egypt’s fascinating and lengthy history. Begin with a visit to the Temples of Karnak, strolling along the Avenue of Sphinx to enter the complex. The Temples of Karnak make up the history of Thebes and consists of colossal sandstone columns transported 100 miles along the Nile river, panoramic friezes. Discover with your guide how the massive façade was constructed. Continue to Luxor Temple which was once joined to the Temples of Karnak by a 1.25-mile-long Avenue of Sphinx, a portion of which marks the entrance to the temple. The temple dates to approximately 1400 BC and is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship rather than the Pharaohs, cult gods or deified versions of the king in death. During the Roman era, the temple and its surroundings served as a legionary fortress and acted as the home of the Roman government in the area.

Dinner is included tonight at the Winter Palace's 1886 Restaurant. Chef Ménad Berkani inspires à la carte French creations from crayfish to risotto at this opulent Luxor restaurant. Dine by candlelight among gilded mirrors while a guitarist strums quietly. Formal dress is required for dinner: jacket and tie for men, smart attire for women.

Accommodation: Sofitel Old Winter Palace (5*)

Discover Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, a luxury hotel built in 1886 by British explorers. Perched on the Nile River amid luxuriant tropical gardens and ancient temples, the 19th-century palace was once a winter retreat for the Egyptian royal family, and Agatha Christie wrote her famed 1937 novel Death on the Nile at the property. This opulent Luxor hotel blends rich colonial design with the glory of Pharaonic times. Illustrious dignitaries - from presidents and politicians to artists and celebrities - have stayed in this Luxor hotel’s sumptuous suites overlooking the Valley of the Kings. In the crystal-lit Victorian Lounge savor afternoon tea with decadent pastries and delicate sandwiches. In the historic 1886 restaurant fine-dine on gourmet French cuisine. Relax by the pool or venture out to explore Luxor Temple or peruse Luxor's bustling market steps away.

Day 5: Luxor

Some of the most spectacular sites in all of Egypt can be found on the West Bank of the Nile, near Luxor. Meet with your private guide and driver to spend a half day exploring the West Bank of the Nile, home to the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. Start with a visit to the Valley of the Kings to explore the famous Tomb of Tutankhamun along with two other interesting tombs. King Tut became Pharaoh at the tender age of nine or ten, and the discovery of his nearly intact tomb in 1922 fascinated the world. For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the kings and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt). Explore the recently renovated mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the second historically confirmed female Pharaoh. She is generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful Pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty, and remembered as the first great woman in history of whom we are informed. Next head to the nearby Valley of the Queens, where the wives of Pharaohs were buried during the 18th through 20th Dynasties. End the visit to the West Bank with a visit to the Colossi of Memnon, the only remaining monuments of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

Enjoy a buffet-style lunch at the Steigenberger Nile Palace Hotel.

Set sail on a Nile adventure and take in the scenery around Luxor aboard a traditional, non-motorized felucca. A felucca cruise is an absolute must on any visit to Egypt! Used along the Nile since the times of antiquity, the sailboats are an iconic sight along the river. Enjoy a short cruise onboard one today.

Day 7: Amman - Petra

Certified Private English speaking guide provided for daily tours.

Today visit the site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany, where Jesus was baptized. The site has now been identified on the east bank of the Jordan River, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and is being systematically surveyed, excavated, restored, and prepared to receive pilgrims and visitors.

Relax on a private transfer from Amman to Petra, stopping at Madaba and Mt. Nebo on the way. Drive to Mt. Nebo where according to Jewish and Christian tradition, Moses was buried on this mountain by God himself, although his final resting place is unknown. Scholars continue to dispute whether the mountain currently known as Nebo is the same as the mountain referred to in the Torah. Visit Madaba and view the Mosaic map in the 19th century Greek Orthodox St George’s Church. Unearthed 1864, the mosaic was once a clear map with 157 captions (in Greek) of all major biblical sites from Lebanon to Egypt. The mosaic was constructed AD 560 & once contained more than 2 million pieces; only 1/3 of the whole map now survives. Continue by private car to Petra.

The Siq Al-Barid (Little Petra) is located to the north of Petra, only a 10 minute drive away. A classical temple stands guard outside the miniature siq which would appear to have been an important suburb of the city of Petra, situated at the point where several ancient caravan routes met, linking Wadi Araba with Gaza, Egypt and the Mediterranean coast. The narrow file, only some 350 m long, is crammed with tombs, temples, triclinia, houses, water channels and cisterns. The surrounding area is picturesque and fun to explore.

Accommodation: Petra Marriott (5*) (B) (Standard)

Enjoy one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the ancient Nabatean city of Petra carved from the rock over a thousand years ago. Embracing traditional hospitality and overlooking Jordan's timeless wonder, the Petra Marriott Hotel offers anticipatory & traditional service designed to exceed all expectations.

Day 8: Petra

Certified private English speaking guide for daily tours outside of Amman.

Petra is the treasure of the ancient world, and the rock-carved rose-red city is full of mysterious charm. Indeed, it was "designed to strike wonder into all who entered it". Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, this remarkable city of grand buildings carved into massive cliffs evokes wonder to this day.

Enjoy a walking tour of Petra by night, this is easy to do on your own and self guided. By the light of 1,800 candles, this is truly an out-of-this-world experience! Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path, to conclude enjoy the entrancing music of the Bedouin region at the Treasury.

Includes Entry ticket fee for Petra Night Show.

Settle in for a scenic drive through the desert from Petra to Wadi Rum. The drive takes approximately 1.5-2 hours.

Wadi Rum has a timeless feel to it – a stupendous open space, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here, it is the weather and winds that have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as vast, echoing and God-like. Hikers can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces and explore the canyons and water holes to discover 4000-year-old rock drawings and the many other spectacular treasures this vast wilderness holds in store. Head into the desert today with your Bedouin driver for a 2-hour jeep tour through the monolithic rockscape, visiting Lawrence Spring and the Khazali sites. Lunch is included at the Rose Sand Camp. Return to Petra in the late afternoon.

Day 11: Tel Aviv - Jerusalem

Enjoy a private transfer from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Transfer time is approximately one hour.

The heart of the Holy Land centers around Jerusalem – the cradle of civilization and revered as a Holy City in Christianity, Judaism and Islam alike. The Mount of Olives overlooks the Old City, standing testament to millennia of history and separating the Holy City from the Judean Desert. Begin the day with your private English-speaking driver-guide at the Mount of Olives, gazing upon the evocative panorama of the Old City below, with expansive views of the olive tree canopies, cemeteries, and churches. From here, enter the Old City through the Muslim Quarter from the eastern Lion’s Gate, stopping to visit the Church of Saint Anne and the Pools of Bethesda.

Follow in the footsteps of the Via Dolorosa, an important pilgrimage route for Christian visitors, believed to mark the way to the site of Jesus’ crucifixion at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and one of the most revered Christian monuments. Stop for an Israeli lunch at a nearby restaurant (not included).

Wind your way through the narrow souks connecting the Christian Quarter and the Jewish Quarter, ending the morning at the Western Wall, the former retaining wall of the Second Temple. The space in front of the Western Wall functions as an open-air synagogue, and it is considered to be the holiest accessible site where Jews may pray.

Head out of the Old City through the Dung Gate to the neighboring City of David an archaeological site located outside of the Old City walls with findings dating back to the Bronze Age and covering findings from the time of the Old and New Testament.

Accommodation: American Colony (B) (Classic Pasha)

The American Colony Hotel, a landmark fairytale get-away in the heart of Jerusalem, has been providing its luxurious hospitality services for more than 120 years. Personified by classic Arabian arches, elaborate furnishings and opulent suites, this elegant boutique hotel prides itself in offering guests an enchanting ‘east-meets-west’ experience in a distinctively tranquil and romantic setting. With state-of-the-art amenities, the American Colony’s ambience and splendour enchants its guests with the ultimate blend of modern conveniences and old world charm. Its lush gardens, world-class restaurants, rich theme-night entertainment offerings and quintessential style, have earned the American Colony its distinguished reputation as an ‘oasis’ where timeless elegance meets contemporary facilities to provide new and returning guests of all ages with an extraordinary experience.

Day 12: Jerusalem

Iconic natural wonders dot the Israeli landscape, playing their own role in the Holy Land’s lengthy biblical history. Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea stand out in the Jordan Rift Valley against the dramatic backdrop of the mountains on the Jordanian side of the border. With your English-speaking driver-guide, start the day with a visit to the beautiful Ein Gedi Reserve, a stunning desert oasis graced with waterfalls and referenced several times in the Book of Psalms. Continue by car to Masada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous as the site of King Herod’s desert mountain get-away palace, and the scene of the zealots’ final stand against the Roman Legion, with stunning vistas overlooking the desert and Dead Sea below.

Ascend to the summit by cable car, and explore the excavation of King Herod’s palaces, the bathhouse, storerooms, the ancient ramp used to ascend the mountain, and one of the oldest still-standing synagogues. It is possible to hike up the Snake Path to the summit of Masada, but this is only recommended for guests in good health, as the 90-minute hike in the hot desert sun is quite challenging. End the day with a soak in the Dead Sea, famous for it its hyper-salinated waters and for being the lowest place on earth, located 1,412 feet below sea level. The sea was home to one of the worlds first health resorts, dedicated to King Herod. The waters have been receding over the past hundred years, leading to cooperative engineering projects between Israel and Jordan to protect the resource in the future.

Day 13: Jerusalem

Located only 6 miles south of Jerusalem, Bethlehem is a world apart. Famous as the birthplace of Jesus, the town is a point of pilgrimage for Christians of all denominations. Your English-speaking driver-guide will accompany you to the checkpoint between Israel and Bethlehem. Please make sure you have your passport with you, as Israelis cannot cross this checkpoint. Once you are safely through the checkpoint, a Palestinian guide will join you for a visit to the Chapel of the Milk Grotto. The site is currently a Catholic church, built on the site of a 5th-century Byzantine church. It is believed that the Holy Family sought refuge here during the “slaughter of the innocents”. Continue by car to the Basilica of the Church of the Nativity, located on the site where Jesus was believed to be born. The Church is revered across denominations and is administered jointly by Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Armenian Apostolic and Syrian Orthodox Church authorities, making it a unique chapel to visit. Take your time exploring these sacred sites, and feel free to chat with your Palestinian guide about what life is like in the West Bank. There are interesting shops in Bethlehem focusing on Christian religious apparel that differ from those in the Christian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem. Your guide will return with you to the checkpoint with Israel, where you will rejoin your Israeli guide for the day.

Jerusalem’s identity as a historical center extends beyond the confines of the Old City, and many of the treasures of the country can be found scattered throughout the city. With your English-speaking driver-guide, head to the Israel Museum to start the day. On the way, drive by the Supreme Court and the Knesset, the home of the Israeli parliament. The Israel Museum holds artefacts relevant to Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike, and the two most important exhibits are the model of the city from the time of the Second Temple, and the Shrine of the Book, housing the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest biblical manuscripts in the world that were uncovered in nearby Qumran.

Drive to the Holocaust Memorial of Yad Vashem, located on the flanks of Mount Herzl adjacent to the country’s war cemetery. Yad Vashem is the country’s official memorial to victims of the Holocaust, and a heart-wrenching plea against the horrors of genocide. It is a must-see for all visitors to Israel.

Our trip to Egypt was excellent!!!. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the Kensington Representatives in Cairo and Luxor. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left every single one of them was making sure we were satisfied with the trip! Their only focus was to make our experience one of a kind. I was delighted by the high level of service my husband and I received on board of the Sonesta Star Goddess Ship! The ship is not the newest but the service and food make up for it. Additionally, I would like to highlight our Egyptologist Mohamed Mosa! He was extremely knowledgeable, passionate about what he does and very friendly! Our guide in Cairo, Roba was also very sweet and friendly. Again, my husband and I had a wonderful experience and would recommend Kensington and encourage people to visit Egypt! It is absolutely spectacular!
