NOTE: Travel in Egypt often involves early-morning starts, designed to avoid crowds and the hottest midday hours. It can be hot, especially in June, July and August, but there is virtually no humidity and evening temperatures cool off dramatically. Egypt is a moderate secular state, well used to hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. While you will want to avoid revealing clothing, loose shorts and short-sleeved shirts are fine for both genders. « Show Less

Day 4: Cairo - Luxor

A transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver between Cairo and the airport is provided.

Take your flight from Cairo to Luxor. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour.

Meet a trained Egyptologist and private vehicle upon your arrival into Luxor and visit the Luxor Temple and Karnak. The Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the East Bank of the River Nile and is believed to be founded in 1400 B.C.E. The earliest parts of the temple still standing are the barque chapels, just behind the first pylon. The main part of the temple - the colonnade and the sun court were built by Amenhotep III, and a later addition by Rameses II, who built the entrance pylon, and the two obelisks (one of which was taken to France, and is now at the center of the Place de la Concorde) linked the Hatshepsut buildings with the main temple. During the Roman era, the temple and its surroundings were a legionary fortress and the home of the Roman government in the area. From here, continue on your tour to visit the great temple of Karnak on the East Bank to marvel at the achievements of one of the earliest civilizations.

Dinner is included tonight at the Winter Palaces 1886 restaurant. Chef Ménad Berkani inspires à la carte creations from crayfish to risotto at this opulent Luxor restaurant. Dine by candlelight among gilded mirrors; a guitarist strums quietly.

Accommodation: Sofitel Old Winter Palace (5*)

Discover Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor a 5-star luxury hotel built in 1886 by British explorers perched on the Nile River amid luxuriant tropical gardens and ancient temples. This opulent Luxor hotel blends rich colonial design with the glory of Pharaonic times. Illustrious dignitaries - from presidents and politicians to artists and celebrities - have stayed in this Luxor hotel’s sumptuous suites overlooking the Valley of the Kings. In the crystal-lit Victorian Lounge savor afternoon tea with decadent pastries and delicate sandwiches. In the historic 1886 restaurant fine-dine on gourmet French cuisine. Day 5: Luxor

This morning you will meet up with your guide and explore some of the most incredible sites of the country. You will visit the Valley of the Kings where you will have the chance to explore three tombs including the famous Tutankhamun Tomb (King Tut's Tomb). For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the kings and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt). The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite modern Luxor. Then it's off to the nearby Valley of the Queens and also the recently renovated mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut was the second pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt. She is generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty. The tour includes a visit to the huge Colossi of Memnon which are all that remain of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

Enjoy a buffet-style lunch at the Steigenberger Nile Palace Hotel.

Taking a Felucca down the Nile is something you must do when visiting Egypt! Feluccas are non-motorized sail boats that have been used on the Nile since the times of antiquity. Enjoy a short cruise onboard today.

Day 7: Amman - Petra

Certified Private English speaking guide provided for daily tours.

Today visit the site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany, where Jesus was baptized. The site has now been identified on the east bank of the Jordan River, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and is being systematically surveyed, excavated, restored, and prepared to receive pilgrims and visitors.

Enjoy a private tour transfer from Amman to Petra. Stop on the way to Nebo where according to Jewish and Christian tradition, Moses was buried on this mountain by God himself, and his final resting place is unknown. Scholars continue to dispute whether the mountain currently known as Nebo is the same as the mountain referred to in the Torah. Visit Madaba and view the Mosaic map in the 19th century Greek Orthodox St George’s Church. Unearthed 1864, the mosaic was once a clear map with 157 captions (in Greek) of all major biblical sites from Lebanon to Egypt. The mosaic was constructed AD 560 & once contained more than 2 million pieces; only 1/3 of the whole map now survives. Tour the magnificent Crusader fortress of Kerak - Crak des Moabites, or Le Pierre du Desert to Crusaders - which soars above its valleys and hills like a great ship riding waves of rock before you arrive at your hotel.

The Siq Al-Barid (Little Petra) is located to the north of Petra, only a 10 minute drive away. A classical temple stands guard outside the miniature siq which would appear to have been an important suburb of the city of Petra, situated at the point where several ancient caravan routes met, linking Wadi Araba with Gaza, Egypt and the Mediterranean coast. The narrow file, only some 350 m long, is crammed with tombs, temples, triclinia, houses, water channels and cisterns. The surrounding area is picturesque and fun to explore.

Accommodation: Movenpick Petra (5*)

The splendorous Mövenpick Resort Petra is the close neighbor of the ancient, dusty rose city of Petra. The hotel, offering 183 rooms and suites, plays host to wanderers aching for the short trek into this well of history and ruins. Upon returning, spend time at one of the seven hotel restaurants, each of which opens doors to culinary persuasions from across the world, though special focus is given to Middle Eastern specialties. The hotel itself remains a centre of activity, with a fully equipped fitness gym, health and wellness swimming pool and steam bath, and views of open horizons. Sit down to some traditional Arabic argil at the end of the evening, and absorb the sun as it sets.

Day 8: Petra

Certified private English speaking guide for daily tours outside of Amman.

Petra is the treasure of the ancient world, and the rock-carved rose-red city is full of mysterious charm. Indeed, it was "designed to strike wonder into all who entered it". Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, this remarkable city of grand buildings carved into massive cliffs evokes wonder to this day.

Enjoy a walking tour of Petra by night, this is easy to do on your own and self guided. By the light of 1,800 candles, this is truly an out-of-this-world experience! Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path, to conclude enjoy the entrancing music of the Bedouin region at the Treasury.

Includes Entry ticket fee for Petra Night Show.

  • Devon Vaughan — August 14, 2017 — Egypt & Middle East

This was such an amazing trip. We greatly appreciate how informative our host Mohamed and all of the guides we had were. Our host met with us every day except for when we were on the boat and gave us a rundown of what we were doing that day, etc. We never once waited on the guides or van drivers, everything in our tour went exceptionally smooth! We could not have asked for better tour guides. Hala, Mohamed Saad and Mohamed Mekkay are very knowledgeable guides, they offered so much information on everything that we saw and were able to answer all of our questions. We absolutely loved them. Thank you so much for such a great experience!

The trip overall was fantastic. The guides were great and very knowledgeable and the sites were amazing. The accommodations were excellent especially the Four Seasons Hotel and the Fairmont Hotel. The boat was very nice, the food was great and the on board shows were very good.

The guides were spectacular. They answered my questions, they took an interest as what to see & do into our most consideration. They were very helpful. They watched out for me & my safety at all times, took to me to places to buy things from the locals, like real alabaster, real oils, real food, real gold and silver jewelry. They gave me insight of the culture & the world the locals lived in. The drivers were awesome. They picked us up when we called, waited for us, and got us to where we were going. Gareth Smith, our travel consultant was phenomenal in getting me the right package deal on catering to my needs & what I wanted to see & do. All in all one, spectacular vacation from start to finish

Loved the whole tour, every day of it was fantastic! The Egyptologists and tour guides, Mohamed Gamal, Mohamed Saad, Wael Magdy Tito, are very knowledgeable and helpful. We felt very safe and protected. Our drivers, especially Yasser, were the best drivers. Cairo traffic is crazy but they managed every situation. We are experienced travelers but this trip was the one we will cherish the most. Let's not forget our security personnel as well. They were discreet and vigilant everywhere we went. Egypt is a beautiful country with beautiful people and wonderful food. History is amazing and Kensington Tours made a long time life dream come true for us! Thank you Roudayna for planning our trip!

This was our first experience using Kensington. Their online reviews were positive, the website was helpful listing numerous points of interests and options. Our itinerary was based on our list of things we wanted to see and do. All our interests were covered from being met upon arrival, helped through the visa/entry process to check-in for our departure. Our accommodations at Winter Palace, onboard Royal Lilly and the Fairmont Hotel were first rate. The guides exceeded our expectations, one was actually an Egyptologist, my wife loves history and was impress with the accuracy of these men.

This was an amazing trip! Our coordinator Mohammed and guides Sam and Tito were world-class guides. They were well educated on Egyptian history and balanced the trip so we saw the sites but didn't get overwhelmed. No detail was overlooked by Tito and Mohammed. They had wifi hotspots for us, SIM cards, greeted us with a platter of local desserts and went to any lengths to meet requests all while making it look effortless. I mentioned that I love sushi so they took us to a sushi place just for me! Tito surprised us with Turkish coffee and stuffed camels for my nieces without me even asking and he wouldn't accept payment. They were incredibly gracious and welcoming and felt like family members by the time we left. One last thing- regarding security. Most have questioned the safety while I was there but I never once felt unsafe. Having Tito as a guide taking us everywhere made us feel safe. Even as we toured two famous mosques, Tito timed it so that we were there between the calls to prayer to minimize our presence there. This was my first vacation tour and I will definitely consider Kensington again. It was so nice not to have to worry about coordinating all the minute details of a trip which enabled me to relax and just enjoy. Thank you! Mena Tours in Egypt represented Kensington very well.
