Discover impossibly beautiful landscapes, quaint medieval towns, and lavish castles and palaces along the Romantische Strasse – Germany’s scenic Romantic Road. From charming Wurzburg to cozy Rothenburg, this tour takes in the eye-catching countryside of the Bavarian Alps before pausing for an end-of-the-road rest amid the beer gardens of laidback Munich.

After arriving in Frankfurt, the journey truly begins in Wurzburg at the Romantic Road’s northern terminus. Almost completely destroyed by an Allied bombing raid in 1945, this charming city has been rebuilt in a fashion that blends the modern with the medieval, as you’ll discover on a private walking tour of its Old Town (including the UNESCO-protected Residenz palace). Later, get a glimpse of the area’s postcard-perfect medieval villages on a private tour of Wertheim am Main, Miltenberg, and Mespelbrunn, the latter of which is home to the stunning Mespelbrunn Castle. From Wurzburg, head south along the Romantic Road through the scenic Tauber River Valley to the immaculately preserved fairy-tale town of Rothenburg. Here, you’ll take part in a pretzel-making tour and tilt a pint or two at the Unter den Linden Biergarten before meeting up with the local night watchman (in period costume, no less) for a private tour of Rothenburg by night. Continuing south across the gorgeous Bavarian countryside, drop in at the painstakingly preserved Harburg Castle on the way to Fussen, the southern end of the Road. After taking some time to explore this fascinating little town in the Bavarian Alps on your own, continue on towards Munich, stopping along the way to take in the unbelievable view from atop Neuschwanstein Castle. The tour winds up in welcoming Munich, the heart of Bavaria. Meet this easygoing city on a private tour of its must-see sights – Schloss Nymphenburg, Olympiapark, and BMW Welt among them – before exploring the highlights of the central Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt. But before you head home, bid a hearty auf Wiedersehen to the Romantic Road over dinner at Hofbräuhaus, Bavaria’s beloved 16th-century beer hall. ... Show More »

Day 2: Wurzburg

Today, explore three of central Germany’s most picturesque villages; Wetheim am Main, Miltenberg, and Mespelbrunn Castle in the Spessart Valley. In Wertheim, a romantic, medieval town located where the Main and Tauber Rivers converge, a 12th century castle overlooks a scenic town that is characterized by narrow alleyways, half-timbered houses, the Franconian market square and the Grafschaftsmuseum, which is host to a collection of invaluable glassware. Your next stop is Miltenberg, a town that was first documented in 1237. Here, viniculture reigns supreme as the town lies at the foot of what is known as the Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail. Notably, Miltenberg is host to what is believed to be the country’s oldest inn, Gasthaus zum Riesen, along with two excellent museums – Museum Stadt Miltenberg and Museum Burg Miltenberg – both of which are certainly worth visiting. Your final stop for the day will be Mespelbrunn Castle. Here, a slim tower reflects ion the lake, a serene interruption of the narrow, dark forests of the valley, creating an impression of peace and clarity within the howling wilderness. The atmosphere surrounding the castle has been preserved over the centuries; it has never been destroyed, always safe in the possession of the Counts of Ingelheim.

Day 3: Wurzburg - Rothenburg

Enjoy a private transfer from Wurzburg to Rothenburg, traveling along the Romantic Road en route. The town of Wurzburg is the gateway to the Romantic Road – Germany’s most popular tourist route. From Wurzburg, travel through Tauberbischofsheim and Bad Mergentheim, continue through the lovely Tauber River Valley to Weikersheim and its impressive renaissance castle that is always worth a visit. On it goes to Creglingen and the Herrgottskirche with the marvelous wooden altar by Tilman Riemenschneider. The main attraction of the trip is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a town that doesn’t appear to have changed much since the Middle Ages. Entrance fees not included. Approximate travel time is five hours.

Romantic medieval atmosphere, great food and drink at reasonable prices, and a very friendly inn keeper make the Altfränkische Weinstube restaurant a favorite of locals and tourists alike. If there is space at the Stammtisch (Regular's table) you can challenge one of the locals to a game of chess (the set is stored in the table's drawer). Of course, on any evening you may like a romantic table near the open fireplace.
The Altfränkische Weinstube offers recipes and wine from the local Franken region and as well as a few international selections. Favorites are the Schweinelendchen mit Preiselbeeren und Salat (pork tenderloins with cranberrys and a fabulous salad) with a local beer and the beefsteak with mediterianian vegetables and a salad, accompanied by a dry red table wine.

Accommodation: Hotel Eisenhut (4*)

Day 4: Rothenburg

Sweet or salty, spread with butter or enjoyed with wheat beer and sausage, the pretzel has been a local favorite for centuries. Today, learn how to make your very own delicious pretzels from scratch on this locally-themed culinary course. Begin by touring a local bakery and then get set to put your own skills to the test. You’ll have the guidance of a local baker to help you along the process of preparing a ‘pretzel rope’ and to assist as you bend the dough into its signature shape. After preparing your perfect pretzel, you’ll have a chance to sample your creation, paired with a delicious cup of coffee.

About a ten minutes walk from Rothenburg's city center you can sit under the trees on the river Tauber - in the unique and beautiful beer garden "Unter den Linden" - a true oasis of peace and relaxation. You may even wish to dangle your feet in the river!

The day tourists have left Rothenburg, and now the night watchman in his historic dress invites you to join him on his walk across quiet squares and through the barely illuminated lanes. Experience the special mood and atmosphere of the dark city and listen to his entertaining and informative stories. This tour will be an unforgettable highlight of your stay in Rothenburg.

Day 7: Munich

Your day begins with a hotel lobby rendezvous, where your guide will greet you and start the day’s adventure to discover the best of Munich, one of Germany’s most visually striking and culturally impressive cities. After a private vehicle and driver transfers you to city’s west side, you’ll explore Nymphenburg Palace, a remarkable 17th century marvel renowned for its Baroque façade, lavish interiors and sprawling public gardens. On the way back into town, you’ll make a quick stop at Olympic Park. Constructed in 1972 to host the summer games and the site of the well-document tragedy, today it is a popular park and, in particular, the Track and Field Stadium is worth seeing first-hand. You’ll also make a quick stop at nearby BMW World to catch a glimpse of the engineering feats behind the makers of one of Europe’s most celebrated automobile brands. Having explored the north-west of Munich, you’ll drive into the heart of the city beginning with a stroll through English Garden, one of the world’s largest public parks. A top highlight is the Eisbach Wave, a permanent rapid where local surfers meet to test their skills. After a stop for lunch, you’ll delve into the city’s past while exploring its car-free historic core on foot. At Marienplatz, Munich’s central square, a host of outstanding buildings including both the New and Old City Hall and the famed Glockenspiel adorn the perimeter, dazzling visitors and locals alike. If you’re visiting during the top of the hour, the chimes of the Glockenspiel will ring aloud, and on certain hours, re-enact two 16th century stories; The Marriage of Duke Wilhelm V and The Coopers’ Dance. Neighboring Marienplatz is Viktualienmarkt, the traditional market square where Munich residents go to purchase a wide range of fresh specialties. In both Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt, you’ll be led to a range of shops and curios based on your personal interests, and then left to your own devices after bidding farewell to your guide.

No visit to Munich is complete without a dining experience at the famous Hofbrauhaus. Germans' love of beer is unrivaled worldwide, and Munich is home to Bavaria's most celebrated beer hall: Hofbrauhaus. Formerly the royal brewery for the Kingdom, Hofbrauhaus is now owned by the state government and also has the second largest tent at Oktoberfest - "Hofbrau-Festzelt". Grab a stein of their finest brew and drink with friends in the restaurant, die Schwemme (beer hall), or Biergarten (beer garden) often accompanied by live music. In case there was any doubt about how much Germans value their beer, regulars to Hofbrauhaus keep their valuable steins in a series of safes in the beer hall. Meal not included, and paid locally.
