It's hard to believe the largest island on Earth is out of mind for the travel masses, but that's the reality for Greenland. Vast, unique, and heavily under-explored, it's a forgotten playground for the intrepid traveler. From tiny coastal villages to colossal glaciers and icebergs, the vibrant tundra of the arctic summer is your path to a new reality.

Geographically remote, and stifled by harsh arctic winters, Greenland remains a true explorer’s dream. In the short window of summer, daylight reigns supreme, and the landscape awakens colorfully from its slumber. With a private guide, hike icy fjords to glaciers, helicopter over mammoth icebergs, immerse yourself in the local community as you have coffee with villagers, and visit Viking ruins left behind 500 years prior to the age of Columbus. Top it off with special access to an acclaimed arctic research facility led by one of the on-site scientists. Experience one of the final frontiers in Greenland.

Day 1: Narsarsuaq

Meet your private driver and vehicle for an airport transfer. For your added comfort, an English-speaking assistant will be waiting for you at the airport to ensure a smooth transfer and check-in, and to walk you through your welcome package documents.

With your private guide, enjoy a half-day excursion taking you across Tunulliarfik Fjord by public boat, then going ashore at the sheep breeding settlement of Qassiarsuk, situated on the very spot where Eric the Red settled and named his farm, Brattahlid, over 1,000 years ago. It was from here that his son Leif the Lucky left for his voyage to North America, 500 years prior to famed explorer Christopher Columbus. You'll visit the ruins of Eric's farm and Thorhildur's church, the first Christian church on the American continent, then return back to Narsarsuaq by boat.

Accommodation: Hotel Narsarsuaq

Located in the small settlement of Narsarsuaq in Southern Greenland, Hotel Narsarsuaq provides basic comfort across 80 rooms and suites. Located in peaceful surroundings with a diversity of flora and fauna, exceptional hiking opportunities and proximity to the ice cap all amount to an explorer's dream location. An on-site restaurant offers an international menu and Greenlandic cuisine, both exotic and familiar, perfect after a day of discovery.

Day 2: Narsarsuaq - Narsaq

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a port transfer.

From Narsarsuaq pier, you'll join your private guide on a public boat crossing through the Qooroq Icefjord, then to Itilleq where you'll disembark and begin a 2-mile walk to Gardar, the former site of the 12th century Norse Bishopry in Iceland. See the archaeological ruins and stone foundations of former Norse settlements recounted in the Sagas, including those of the Gardar Cathedral, built in 1126. Learn of the ongoing excavations and findings in the areas, before being treated to lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you'll continue by boat to Narsaq.

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a port transfer.

Embark on a walking tour of Narsaq with your private guide, taking a stroll along the harbor, and past everyday sights like the local police station, bank, school, hospital, and church, offering a surprisingly intriguing contrast as you witness these pedestrian landmarks in their frontier village form. You'll visit the Narsaq Musuem where you'll discover the history of Norse settlement, and visit the house of notable 19th century Greenlandic artist, Henrik Lund.

One of the most authentic ways to enrich your Greenland experience is to spend some time with locals. Set out with your private guide to meet up with a local family in the village, joining them for some coffee and a chance to talk about your experiences and hear the latest town gossip. Enjoy this moment, reveling in genuine village life.

Day 4: Narsaq - Qaqortoq

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a port transfer.

Transfer from Narsaq to Qaqortoq aboard a private boat, cruising through the narrow Mato Strait. En route, you'll make landfall at Hvalsey with your private guide, an area with the best-preserved ruins from the Viking period in Greenland: the Hvalsey Church. Admire the relatively intact stone remains of this ancient place of worship, picturing Norse settlers on these very shores centuries ago, surrounded by a stunning backdrop of mountain or sea in every direction. Enjoy a packed lunch here as you take in the breathtaking views.

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a port transfer.

With your private guide, depart on foot to discover some incredible local art, bearing witness to the open air Stone & Man art project in Qaqortoq. With the rock face acting like a canvas, over 40 Scandinavian sculptures have been created and carved directly into the boulders around town here, creating a beautiful and intriguing mosaic of cultural identity, with contributions from numerous artists.

Accommodation: Hotel Qaqortoq

Hotel Qaqortoq offers comfortable accommodation with an authentic Greenlandic atmosphere that's both warm and inviting. Perched on a hill overlooking the harbor, Hotel Qaqortoq is an oasis of calm, featuring modern guestrooms and amenities. Pass by the local school named after Greenlandic polar explorer Jorgen Bronlund, witness the fish market where the daily catch is available for sale, and visit Knud Rasmussen's Museum, where you'll hear of the accomplishments of famed Greenlandic-Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen - the first European to dogsled through the Northwest Passage. Renowned for its stunning array of massive icebergs, the Icefjord can play host to glacial breakoffs as large as 3,300 feet in height. You'll follow your guide for a half day or full day, depending on your desires, trekking the scenic coastline of the Icefjord for magnificent views of icebergs, as well as the local flora and fauna surrounding Ilulissat. A packed lunch will be provided during your hike, and your day will conclude on return to your hotel.

With your private guide, head to the small Ilulissat Art Museum where you'll meet and join the museum's curator for a special private tour of the collection. The museum primarily focuses on the works of 20th century Danish painter Emanuel A. Petersen. With the insight of the curator, learn about the many works depicting Greenlandic scenes in a project funded by the Crown to create more synergy between the Danish colony of Greenland and mainland Denmark.

Board a public ferry for a transfer to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island. Approximate travel time is 4.5 hours.

Follow your private guide on a short walking transfer on Disko Island, with your hotel located just minutes from the port.

With your private guide, discover the small town of Qeqertarsuaq on foot, followed by an exclusive experience at the renowned environmental research facility, Arctic Station. Key in on some local history with a visit to the Qeqertarsuaq Museum, depicting life in colonial times, then admire some of the quaint village landmarks such as the red Qeqertarsuaq Church, and the fire brigade. Stroll the black sand beach coastline and head to the Arctic Station, funded by the University of Denmark. On arrival, you'll join a scientist who works at the Arctic Station for an exclusive guided tour of the facility, offering some unique insights into the cutting edge environmental research they're able to embark on here in frontier territory.

Guestrooms at Hotel Diskobay are equipped for basic comfort, an onsite restaurant serves up local, seasonal fare, while a veritable playground of Greenland's rugged nature is right outside your door.

Day 9: Qeqertarsuaq - Oqaatsut - Ilulissat

Board a private helicopter with your guide and leave Disko Island behind as you fly over Disko Bay for a transfer to Oqaatsut, enjoying some scenic flightseeing as you go. Before the crossing, you'll first touch down on the Lyngmark Glacier for a memorable experience, stepping out of the chopper to actually plant your feet and even walk around on the ice of the glacier, nearly 3,300 feet above the Disko Island town below. You'll re-board the helicopter and continue across the bay to the mouth of the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, following it inland to the Nordre Glacier where you'll make another landing. Finally, you'll fly to the small hunter's settlement Oqaatsut, formerly Rodebay, where you'll be treated to lunch at a local restaurant followed by a walking tour around the settlement, with your guide explaining the life of the hunting lifestyle still in use by the population here.

Follow your private guide on a brief port walking transfer.

Board a private boat for a 30-minute transfer to Ilulissat, passing the mouth of the Icefjord where you cruise between large icebergs.

With a private kayaking guide, paddle in a kayak and witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord. Kayaking in Ilulissat is a unique activity for two reasons. The first one is obvious; kayaking is possibly the best way to experience the Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Being at the sea level, without any noise and just using your own body to sail among icebergs. The second one, perhaps not that known among people visiting us, is that 4000 years ago people already used kayaks for travelling and hunting here in Ilulissat. Your experienced and certified kayaking guide, along with modern expedition equipment and safety protocols, will make it possible for you to kayak among icebergs, even if you have never been on a kayak before. Besides, they will introduce you to the fascinating world of the original kayak “qajaq”, invented in Greenland and traditionally made from driftwood and animal skin. Conclude with your round-trip private transfer by vehicle.

Accommodation: Hotel Arctic

Hotel Arctic is the world’s most northerly 4-star hotel, sitting right on the edge of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guestrooms are modern, spacious and comfortable, offering views of the sea, city, and/or icebergs. Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
