Day 1: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver-guide and vehicle for an airport transfer. For your added comfort, your English-speaking guide will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents.

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

For a city so heavily steeped in Viking history, the cityscape of Reykjavik is surprisingly modern. The best way to discover the history and culture of Reykjavik is with a constant thread of food and beverage to lead you around the city. Setting out with a private guide, tastings will be provided for you as you set out on a food-themed walking tour through central Reykjavik, where you'll learn a bit of history, see the city's iconic cathedral, and get a taste of traditional Icelandic food all at once. You'll head to a restaurant located directly across from the stunning mid 20th century Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland, where you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Enjoy some traditional fish stew, smoked char and traditional Icelandic flatbread with smoked lamb as a topping. As you wander the city, you'll be treated to some soup with the catch of the day paired with wine or beer, stop at a pub for some dried cod, and if you're adventurous enough, fermented shark with some cumin schnapps to wash it down. End on a sweet note with a stop for some kleina (Icelandic donuts) or cake before returning to your hotel.

Accommodation: Tower Suites

Tower Suites Reykjavik is a luxurious abode in the unique capital of Iceland, ideal for those with an appetite for modern living or anyone who wants to marvel at the wondrous landscape the city has to offer. Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, the eight exclusive suites are located on the 20th floor of one of the city’s most defining buildings, which adds flavor to the intriguing skyline. Each of the hotel's exquisite suites has been thoughtfully designed and boasts its own distinctive character. With a full panoramic view in every direction, you’ll enjoy one of the rarest outlooks of the city and the neighboring mountain range, privy to a view that varies as the weather and even the light changes. Please note: this hotel does not feature any dining facilities, although the hotel staff are happy to arrange meals in one of the building's restaurants, or make city-wide dining recommendations.

Day 2: Reykjavik

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. With your private guide and a specially-modified Super Jeep, set out on a full-day tour, making stops to visit the three most iconic natural sites Iceland has to offer along the way, in addition to a remarkable glacier snowmobiling excursion. Explore the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s first ever parliament dating back over 1,000 years, as well as the visible continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colors throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. You’ll also encounter the magnificent Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. It's this same glacier that you'll get to experience up close as your tour kicks into high gear with a thrilling small group snowmobile excursion onto Langjokull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Gear will be provided, and you'll ride the machines in pairs, enjoying a unique glacial experience. Bring the pace back down with a drive to the final pillar of the Golden Circle. Discover the great Geyser geothermal area where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air, every 6 minutes or so, offering an entertaining show to say the least. Conclude your day on arrival back to Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjavik

Meet your guide and embark on a private full day tour of Iceland's extraordinary South Shore, renowned for its black sand beaches and waterfalls, where you'll also take part in a thrilling ATV adventure. Over the course of your day, you'll set out along the famed Ring Road to admire the picturesque Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, cascading down a 200-foot drop. Discover the towering basalt column cliffs near the town of Vik, and admire black sand beaches as far as the eye can see from the elevated Dyrholaey Nature Reserve. In Flotshlid you'll join a shared ATV excursion, where you'll gear up for a multi-hour adventure. You'll ride the quad bikes in pairs, being lead out into perfectly untouched remote wilderness, far from the grasp of civilization. Pause for a moment with your ignition off, away from rushing water and other people, and hear true silence like never before, perhaps even being so lucky to step in a place where no human has ever set foot in the entire history of Iceland. You'll eventually reach a secret cave used by ancient Celtic priests to pray in, where a charming dinner will be prepared for you in the unique candlelight ambiance of the cave. While it's no gourmet restaurant, this is a truly special experience you'll never forget. Conclude your day on arrival back to Reykjavik.

Day 4: Reykjavik

A unique experience awaits you today, as you transfer with a private driver to a nearby helipad, and board a privately-captained helicopter for an exclusive overflight of Reykjavik. You'll see colorful and charming dollhouse roofs, the neighboring towns and the surrounding countryside with extensive lava fields, reminding of the true volcanic nature of Iceland. After a thrilling 10 minute scenic flight, you'll make a landing on one of the nearby mountain summits (generally Mt. Esja, when conditions allow), for the photo opportunity of a life-time. Toast to the occasion as you crack open and enjoy an included bottle of sparkling wine, with a view to remember. After approximately 15 minutes on the summit, you'll make the return scenic flight back to Reykjavik, then meet your driver for a private transfer back to your hotel.

Meet your private driver at your hotel and depart Reykjavik toward the nearby Heidmork Nature Reserve, site of your exciting horseback riding adventure today. Unique to Iceland, Icelandic Horses have been purebred for centuries (since the days of the Vikings), strictly avoiding influence from other horse breeds from around the world. Featuring a stature and gait entirely their own, a ride on these beauties needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. You'll be provided with appropriate gear and be paired with your own horse, on which you'll follow your guide on a private ride through beautiful trails into a vast expanse of bushy vegetation along beautiful green hillsides. Look for interesting rock formations in the lava fields while experiencing the horses' special gait, tölt. Ideal for beginners and experienced riders alike, your ride will last approximately 1.5 hours, and will be followed with an included assortment of traditional Icelandic snacks and a warm beverage. Conclude with a private transfer back to Reykjavik.

Day 5: Reykjavik - Grindavik

Meet your private driver-guide for a transfer to Grindavik today, discovering the back garden of Reykjavik, the Reykjanes Peninsula, en route. Pass through otherworldly, lunar-like landscapes, witnessing green moss clinging to black volcanic ground, pitted with craters and rugged boulders strewn from the earth’s inner mantle thousands of years ago. Watch mountains appear out of nowhere as you come over hills and wrap around bends, making your way to Kleifarvatn, a small, serene lake nestled between a series of volcanoes and black sand beaches. Over the course of your day, you’ll also head to Seltun to walk a beautiful geothermal hill trail, then get blasted by ocean spray from the wild Atlantic as it splashes up on the seaside viewing platform at Brimketill. See a supernatural-meets-industrial wasteland at Gunnuhver, spot a lighthouse on a cliff peering out over the ocean at Reykjanesviti, and even walk between the North American and Eurasian continental plates at the Bridge Between Continents. A full day of discovery awaits. Conclude your tour on arrival to Grindavik.

This evening, tuck into the cozy ambiance of the epicurean Moss Restaurant at The Retreat Hotel. You'll be treated to a remarkable 5-course tasting menu, sampling a dazzling assortment of curated dishes which highlight the chef's elevated and creative approach to fresh, local and seasonal Icelandic ingredients. Everything at Moss is prepared with an affection for the island and its endless bounty of nourishment. Please note, drinks are at individual discretion, and payable on the spot.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

  • Diana B — June 23, 2019 — Europe

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
