Experience the beauty of Iceland's summer, when the bright nights of the midnight sun reveal infinite possibilities typically hidden under the cloak of nightfall. During the summer, Iceland's countryside is vibrant; pastures are lush with green grass, while moss and lichens add highlights to countless volcanic slopes. Skies favor blues instead of grays, waterfalls are overflowing from the annual thaw, and the infamous midnight sun provides an entirely unique flexibility to private-guided touring. From black sand beaches, to the Golden Circle and more, summer is truly an epic season to take advantage of the natural treasures of Iceland.

Please note: this trip is only possible mid-May to mid-August, with the peak of the midnight sun arriving in June. Please consult with your Destination Expert for more information.

Day 1: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver-guide and vehicle for an airport transfer. Along the way, your guide will make a stop at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you can enjoy the renowned healing properties as you soothe your soul in its mineral waters. A towel rental is included along with your admission. Afterward, for your added comfort, your English-speaking guide will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents.

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

For a city so heavily steeped in Viking history, the cityscape of Reykjavik is surprisingly modern. The best way to discover the history and culture of Reykjavik is with a constant thread of food and beverage to lead you around the city. Setting out with a private guide, tastings will be provided for you as you set out on a food-themed walking tour through central Reykjavik, where you'll learn a bit of history, see the city's iconic cathedral, and get a taste of traditional Icelandic food all at once. You'll head to a restaurant located directly across from the stunning mid 20th century Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland, where you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Enjoy some traditional fish stew, smoked char and traditional Icelandic flatbread with smoked lamb as a topping. As you wander the city, you'll be treated to some soup with the catch of the day paired with wine or beer, stop at a pub for some dried cod, and if you're adventurous enough, fermented shark with some cumin schnapps to wash it down. End on a sweet note with a stop for some kleina (Icelandic donuts) or cake before returning to your hotel.

Accommodation: Sandhotel

Situated in the heart of Reykjavik, Sandhotel is a boutique hotel located on the historic high-street of Laugavegur, the main street of the downtown core which boasts exclusive shops and creatively designed cafes. The Scandi-chic hotel is comprised of art deco townhouses and features 53 guestrooms uniquely furnished with decor from Iceland's most recognized contemporary artisans. Every detail of the guestrooms is designed for comfort and tranquility to create a haven for relaxation. Between Sandhotel's historical adjoined buildings you'll find the famous Sandholt bakery to indulge in freshly baked pastries from 5th generation bakers, the perfect fuel for a day of adventure.

Day 2: Reykjavik

Enjoy a very unique experience this evening with Icelandic delicacies and beautiful vistas in the famous "Midnight Sun"! With your private guide, set out through the Heidmork area, a beautiful nature reserve on the outskirts of Reykjavik, before continuing eastward to the south coast of Iceland. You'll visit the black volcanic sand beaches where seals can often be spotted, followed by a tasting of Icelandic schnapps, a local delicacy! Your next stop is at the wonderful seafood restaurant, Fjörubordid, situated in a small fishing village by the coast, where you will enjoy an unforgettable dinner of freshly caught Atlantic lobster (drinks not included). After this delicious feast, continue onward along some of the rugged tracks back over the moor of Hellisheidi to Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjavik

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. Meet your private guide and set out to discover the three most iconic and picturesque natural sites Iceland has to offer, with a packed lunch being provided along the way. Explore the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s first ever parliament dating back over 1,000 years, as well as the continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a unique geological feature only on display in Iceland. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colors throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. You’ll also encounter the magnificent Gullfoss (Golden Falls), one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. The upper and lower platforms offer impressive perspectives unique to themselves, so the trek between both is well worth your time. The final pillar of the Golden Circle, discover the great Geyser geothermal area where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air, every 6 minutes or so. Climb up the mountain behind Strokkur for a stunning view out across a valley initially hidden from site. Conclude your day back in Reykjavik.

Day 4: Reykjavik

Meet your private guide and depart in a specially-modified Super Jeep for a tour of the fierce Thorsmork Valley, a nature reserve aptly named after the Norse god, Thor, and a favorite natural area of Icelandic locals. Situated in the south of Iceland in a valley nestled between the glaciers Tindfjallajokull and Eyjafjallajokull, Thorsmork features a particularly rugged landscape, and enjoys its own microclimate, generally warmer than the rest of the South Shore. En route, you'll first stop at the scenic Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can enjoy many photo opportunities by walking directly behind its plummeting stream of water. You'll also get to experience the Gigjokull glacier tongue, as well as the meandering Nauthusagil canyon, ravine and waterfall. Arriving to the protected valley of Thorsmork, you'll cross rivers and rough terrain and admire an ever-changing landscape. Passing through rocky mountain tracks and crossing unbridged glacial rivers adds to the delight and excitement of Super Jeeping in this spectacular area. Leave the vehicle behind to enjoy some hiking through this remarkable landscape, or spend some time admiring the beautiful silence as you lie peacefully in the moss. While out in the valley, you'll be treated to the meal of a lifetime - a wilderness BBQ dinner prepared by your guide! What a way to wrap up your adventure. Conclude your day on arrival back to Reykjavik.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
