A primeval land forged by ice and fire, Iceland has inspired incredible stories and thrilling adventures since the Vikings first landed on its shores more than a thousand years ago. The setting for sagas both ancient and contemporary (Iceland serves as a frequent stand-in for the fictional Westeros on Game of Thrones), the magic and wonder of this island country nestled atop the world never fades with time.

It begins near Reykjavík, the world’s most northerly capital, with a relaxing soak in the milky-blue geothermal pools of the Blue Lagoon. Later, embark on a private half-day tour of the capital to learn about its vibrant graffiti art, quirky culture, and emergent food scene. Next, descend by elevator 400 feet into the heart of Thrihnukagigur, a dormant volcano on a private tour. From there, trade downtown for raw nature on explorations of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula’s black-sand beaches and glacier-capped volcano, the stunning Golden Circle region (home to Gullfoss waterfall, the great Geysir, and historic Þingvellir National Park), and the gorgeous eastern highlands of Landmannalaugar (with the help of a private Super Jeep). Near Vik, you’ll meet the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall and explore the ice caves of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier en route to Höfn, land of icebergs and glacial lagoons. Next, head up the eastern coast and move inland to Mývatn to visit the “Game of Thrones” cave, a wilderness center, and slip into a peaceful alkaline lagoon. On the way to Akureyri, you’ll stop in at Húsavík to tour the Whale Museum, take an optional whale-watching tour, and visit a beautifully restored farm near Laufás. Magic is real, and Iceland will make you a believer. ... Show More »

Day 2: Reykjavik

For a city so heavily steeped in Viking history, the cityscape of Reykjavik is surprisingly modern. The best way to discover the history and culture of Reykjavik is with a constant thread of food and beverage to lead you around the city. Setting out with a private guide, tastings will be provided for you as you set out on a food-themed walking tour through central Reykjavik, where you'll learn a bit of history, see the city's iconic cathedral, and get a taste of traditional Icelandic food all at once. You'll head to a restaurant located directly across from the stunning mid 20th century Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland, where you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Enjoy some traditional fish stew, smoked char and traditional Icelandic flatbread with smoked lamb as a topping. As you wander the city, you'll be treated to some soup with the catch of the day paired with wine or beer, stop at a pub for some dried cod, and if you're adventurous enough, fermented shark with some cumin schnapps to wash it down. End on a sweet note with a stop for some kleina (Icelandic donuts) or cake before returning to your hotel.

This evening, make your way to the revered Grillmarkadurinn (The Grillmarket) in downtown Reykjavik, a stylish restaurant honoring a farm-to-table concept to create culinary experiences that delight the five senses. Here you'll enjoy a delightful tasting menu dinner consisting of a curated selection of dishes which highlight the menu, and are served family-style for the whole table to enjoy. Grillmarkadurinn nurtures a close working collaboration with dedicated local farmers to guarantee the very best in local produce for a magical fusion of tradition and modern cuisine. The talented and passionate culinary team highlights the origin of each product by using traditional Icelandic cooking methods of fire logs, coals, open fire and smoke. Your included meal is a tasting menu, served in an order best suited to thrill the palate. Please note, drinks are not included and are payable on the spot.

Day 3: Reykjavik

With a pickup from your hotel, embark on a small group tour today to the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, a unique natural phenomenon offering the only place on earth where a huge volcanic magma chamber is accessible to humans! Once arriving to a hiking access point outside of Reykjavik, your guide will lead you and a group of up to 16 participants on a moderately challenging 2-mile hike through a hilly, rugged and pitted lava field, lasting 45-60 minutes. The hike is an integral part of the day, not only because of its impressive scenery, but also because it's the only way to reach the volcanic chamber opening aside from arriving by helicopter. After the last 10 minutes ascending the mountain path, you'll arrive to the Thrihnukagigur crater base, from where you'll break into smaller groups for a descent of 400 feet to the bottom of the magma chamber in an open cable lift, exposing a whole new world of subterranean wonder. A true delight for curious minds, you'll spend around 30 minutes on the ground of the volcano exploring and admiring this once-in-a-lifetime environment. Back on the surface, a tasty bowl of traditional Icelandic meat or vegetable soup will be provided along with a hot beverage, while you wait for the other members of your group to experience the chamber floor. Afterward, you'll hike back out to your transportation for a return to Reykjavik.

Day 4: Reykjavik

Meet your private guide and embark on a full day tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a stunning area of true natural beauty. One of the westernmost parts of Iceland, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is rich in fascinating landscapes from dramatic volcanic peaks and crunchy lava flows, to sparkling fjords, sheer sea cliffs, and sweeping golden beaches. Departing Reykjavik, you'll head north along the famed Ring Road before setting out west on the Peninsula's main route. Over the course of your day you'll discover the romantic little fishing villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar on the south coast of the peninsula, both famous for their characteristic rock formations in the shapes of arches and sea stacks, along with an array of caves, and cliffs brought to life by massive colonies of birds. Continue your journey around the Snaefellsjokull National Park, home to the glistening Snaefellsjokull glacier-capped stratovolcano, immortalized in Jules Verne’s "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Continue to Kirkjufell, the iconic mountain north of the wall, before heading onward through the small fishing villages and historic trading ports on the northern shores of the peninsula. Conclude your day on arrival back to Reykjavik.

Day 5: Reykjavik - Selfoss

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. After check-out, depart Reykjavik on a full-day transfer to Selfoss, making stops at the three most iconic and picturesque natural sites Iceland has to offer along the way, plus lunch at a local tomato farm and greenhouse. Explore the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s first ever parliament dating back over 1,000 years, as well as the continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a unique geological feature only on display in Iceland. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colors throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. You’ll also encounter the magnificent Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. The upper and lower platforms offer impressive perspectives unique to themselves, so the trek between both is well worth your time. The final pillar of the Golden Circle, discover the great Geyser geothermal area where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air, every 6 minutes or so. Midday you'll be treated to a lunch experience at the Fridheimar Farm Greenhouse where you'll take part in a small group greenhouse tour and enjoy a meal among the tomato plants. Savor the Fridheimar’s famous Tomato soup served with fresh-baked bread and a Healthy Mary drink. Conclude your day on arrival to Selfoss.

This attraction showcases a remarkably unique life-long collection of stones and minerals, the vast majority which were found in the Stodvarfjordur and vicinity. Set out with your private guide for an incredible journey through an area of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, geothermal activity, and geology, as you embark on a scenic tour of Lake Myvatn. Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
