Few places on Earth feel less Earth-like than primal, volcanic Iceland. The warmth and friendliness of the locals are at odds with the vast icefields and jagged peaks that mark their remote island’s landscape. But it’s those very contradictions that make this spellbinding country such a pleasure to explore. This special Explorers Club journey takes you into Iceland’s great outdoors to walk across volcanoes, traverse ice caves carved from centuries of glaciation, swim between the gap dividing continents, and even into the Arctic Circle itself.

The adventure begins in Grindavik, near Reykjavík, with an afternoon at the aptly named Blue Lagoon, whose mineral-rich waters are said to soothe all sorts of skin conditions. Later, take a private hike through the verdant hills and wide-open spaces of Reykjadalur by Super Jeep to check out the waterfalls, hot springs, and natural splendor that makes this impossibly beautiful locale one of the most stunning spots on Earth. Next, travel to Thingvellir National Park to explore the lava tube caves of Gjabakkahellir and, if you’re feeling extra-adventurous, slip into the waters of Thingvallavatn to snorkel the Silfra fissure. It doesn’t get much more “in-depth” than your last full day in the Reykjavík area where you’ll descend 400 feet by elevator into the magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur, a dormant volcano. ... Fly 150 miles to the northeast to your next stop: Akureyri, Iceland’s gateway to the Arctic. Up here, experienced scuba divers will have a unique opportunity to swim across the divide between two continents, at Arnarnesstrytur. The next day, explore the fascinating geothermal caves near Mývatn, a volcanic lake, and then relax in a soothing thermal lagoon. Then, take to the skies in a small plane to witness the frozen vastness of the Far North on a shared three-hour flight into the Arctic Circle before returning to Akureyri, spending the remains of your stay at leisure, exploring the sights of this fascinating town among the mountains.

The Explorers Club Collection by Kensington Tours is an exclusive suite of travel experiences inspired by the expeditions of the world’s foremost society of scientists and adventurers. Each tailor-made Explorers Club trip connects you to the world’s most fascinating people, places, and experiences with expert local guides and award-winning 24/7 service support. Day 1: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver and vehicle for an airport transfer. Along the way, your driver will make a stop at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you'll get to enjoy the renowned healing properties as you soothe your soul in its mineral waters. A towel rental is included along with your admission. Afterward, for your added comfort, an English-speaking assistant will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents.

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

Accommodation: Alda Hotel

Situated in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, Alda Hotel (4*) is found on Laugavegur, a premier street in the capital’s vibrant shopping district. Steps away from many museums and restaurants, Alda Hotel is perfectly positioned for your stay in Reykjavik, while its well-situated guestrooms featuring Nordic design and modern amenities offer the perfect blend of both comfort and style. Day 2: Reykjavik

Meet your private guide and depart Reykjavik for a hiking excursion in the stunning Reykjadalur Valley. Driving along the Ring Road into the picturesque Icelandic countryside, you'll reach the outskirts of the town of Hveragerdi. It's from outside Hveragerdi where your guide will lead you on a scenic multi-hour hike into Reykjadalur, where hot water rushes down the slopes of the Hellisheidi mountain range, creating various natural hot springs across the stunning landscape. Bring your bathing suit and towel so you can pop in for a relaxing bath in the warm Reykjadalur River to break up your hike. Conclude your tour with a return transfer to Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver and set out for an adventure-filled day combining caving & snorkeling in one exciting experience. You'll meet up with a group of no more than 12 participants to gear up for a guided exploration of a scenic lava tube. With helmets and flashlights, you'll be led underground to discover the remarkable rock and mineral characteristics of this cave, situated in one of the most active volcanic areas in the world. Only from below can you truly gain remarkable insight into the geology and volcanic activities that have formed Iceland over the last 20 million years. After, you'll head to Lake Thingvallavatn in Thingvellir National Park, site of the world's first parliament. It's here where you'll be provided with a dry suit and snorkel gear to snorkel in the Silfra fissure. Silfra is one of Iceland's best-kept secrets, a submerged crack between two continental plates that drift apart by nearly an inch every year. It's an otherworldly underwater scene in countless shades of blue. The crystal clear water in the deep fissure gives you a feeling of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current. Rejoin your private driver for a return to Reykjavik.
Please note: the activities within this tour may operate in reverse order.

Day 4: Reykjavik

With a private pickup from your hotel, depart Reykjavik and head out into the Reykjanes Peninsula to the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, a unique natural phenomenon offering the only place on earth where a huge volcanic magma chamber is accessible to humans! Once arriving to the Blue Mountains Country Park, you'll join a guide and small group, setting out on a moderately challenging 2-mile hike through a hilly, rugged and pitted lava field, lasting 45-60 minutes. The hike is an integral part of the day, not only because of its impressive scenery, but also because it's the only way to reach the volcanic chamber opening aside from arriving by helicopter. After the last 10 minutes ascending the mountain path, you'll arrive to the Thrihnukagigur crater base, from where you'll break into smaller groups for a descent of 400 feet to the bottom of the magma chamber in an open cable lift, exposing a whole new world of subterranean wonder. A true delight for curious minds, you'll spend around 30 minutes on the ground of the volcano exploring and admiring this once-in-a-lifetime environment. Back on the surface, a tasty bowl of traditional Icelandic meat or vegetable soup will be provided along with a hot beverage, while you wait for the other members of your group to experience the chamber floor. Afterward, you'll hike back out with the guide, leaving the group behind for your private transfer back to Reykjavik.

Day 5: Reykjavik - Akureyri

Meet your private driver and vehicle for an airport transfer.

Board your direct flight from Reykjavik to Akureyki. Approximate travel time is 45 minutes.

Meet your private driver and vehicle for an airport transfer.

Meet your private driver for a transfer north to Strytan, on the edge of the Eyjafjordur, where you will join a group diving expedition that will explore the unique and wonderful protected underwater area of Arnarnesstrytur. After gearing up with supplied diving equipment, and paired on a basis of 2 divers per guide, you'll do a short orientation dive where you can practice your skills, get used to your equipment, adjust weights, get to know your guide, and gain confidence that will come in handy for the main dive. Afterward you'll be taken on a short ride by zodiac to Arnarnesstrytur, a cluster of small hydrothermal chimneys covered with diverse marine life, pumping out fresh water up to 79°C, which quickly dissipates into the icy saltwater of the North Atlantic. You’ll be diving in the presence of all sorts of underwater creatures who thrive in this environment, everything from tiny shrimps or nudibranch to the ferocious-looking wolffish. If you're extremely lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a humpback whale in the water. Conclude your dive experience back on land, warming up in a hottub and admiring the scenery of the north. Afterward, return to Akureyri by private transfer.

Accommodation: Hotel Kea (B) (Standard)

Located in the heart of Akureyri, gateway to the rich natural splendor of northeast Iceland, Hotel Kea (4*) has been welcoming guests since 1944 with the same high standards of elegance, quality, service and comfort which would be expected of one of Iceland’s most established hotels. Day 6: Akureyri

Set out with your private guide for an incredible journey through an area of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, geothermal activity, and geology, as you embark on a tour of Lake Myvatn and its geothermal caves. The Lake Myvatn area is considered by many to be the most beautiful and at the same time the most catastrophic place in Iceland, which made it an ideal location for the land beyond The Wall in the hit HBO fantasy series Games of Thrones. On your tour, you'll visit the water-filled Grjotagja and Storugja caves, where you can swim in 30°C hot water and even hold your breath and dive between chambers in the caves. The beauty of Grjotagja was famously captured in a bathing scene with Jon and Ygritte in Season 3 of Game of Thrones. Next visit one of Iceland's hidden surprises, the warm Vogagja crack, known locally as the Secret Fissure, then push out into the raw geothermal lava fields of Leirhnjukar and Namaskard, painted in sulfuric pastels, the latter known for its bubbling mud geysers. Round out your day with a visit to the Myvatn Nature Baths, the Blue Lagoon of the north, for some relaxation in the natural geothermal waters. Conclude with a transfer back to Akureyri.

Your tour takes you from Akureyri towards Grímsey Island, the vanguard of northern Iceland, with beautiful scenery and a chance to see humpbacks whales’ en-route, in addition to the spectacular Troll Peninsula. Experience the natural habitat of puffins and one of the last remaining authentic Icelandic fishing villages where you will receive your "Arctic Circle Crossing" badge before feasting on a sample of traditional Icelandic cuisine. It is served by local villagers and timed just before heading back to shore. Your guided tour includes roundtrip private airport transfer, roundtrip flight (entire 1-hour), a 2-hour tour on Grímsey Island, and a sample of traditional Icelandic cuisine and drink.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
