Day 7: Cork - Kenmare

Today you'll transfer to Kenmare with your private driver-guide, exploring the Beara Peninsula en route. The Beara–Breifne Way stretches 250 miles from Cork Count to Leitrim County, generally following the line of the 17th century march of O’Sullivan Beare, the last great chieftain of West Cork. Following a series of battles and the loss of his stronghold, Dunboy Castle, O’Sullivan and his troops, faced with almost certain starvation, were finally forced to flee New Year’s Eve 1602. A thousand men and women, including four hundred soldiers, embarked on an epic mid-winter march, hoping to join forces with rebel leaders in Ulster. Today you’ll retrace a section of this historic path along the Beara Peninsula with a local historian. The Beara Way links many of the Peninsula’s main attractions, from the bird life of Dursey Island and the copper-mines of Allihies, to the military heritage of Bere Island and the famous woods and harbor of Glengarriff. Along the way there are O’Sullivan ruins near Castletownbere and Kealkil, a Heritage Park at Bonane, lakes at Tuosist, and lush gardens at Derreen in Lauragh. Megalithic remains are scattered along the coast and throughout the uplands. Ardgroom has its fine stone circle, while the Hag of Beara – ancient goddess – maintains an eerie presence on the coast near Eyeries.

This morning, you will be joined by local archaeologist Isabel Bennett and take a private helicopter trip along the southern part of the scenic Ring of Kerry, passing over some of the many villages, like Sneem and Caherdaniel, eventually heading out over the Atlantic Ocean to the Skellig Islands. Small Skellig, meanwhile, is famous in the world of ornithology and is home to some 27,000 pairs of gannets. In more recent times, Skellig Michael has become famous as the location for the closing scenes of the Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Following an aerial tour of both islands, you will continue north over the Blasket Islands, back on the mainland over Slea Head, and onto the spectacular Dingle Peninsula. Then, traveling by private car, Isabel will explain the history and significance behind the early medieval ring forts, Neolithic standing stones, wedge tombs and striking beehive huts scattered throughout the area, before returning to Kenmare.

Today, travel north from Kenmare with your private driver-guide as you transfer to County Clare, passing through Killarney and Listowel and on to Tarbert where you'll board a public ferry to cross the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, arriving in Kilimer in County Clare. From there, you'll meet local historian Pius Murray, who will lead you on a journey of discovery through the Burren’s stunning karst landscape. The Burren, a uniquely rocky wilderness area, shelters Stone Age monuments, ancient churches, and, atop the 700-foot tall Cliffs of Moher, O’Brien’s Tower which offers sweeping ocean views. With its innate sense of spiritual peace, extraordinary array of flora and wildlife, and megalithic tombs and monuments older than Egypt’s pyramids, the Burren creates a tapestry of color and a seductively magical aura which few people leave without wanting to experience again. Reconnect with nature, while walking on limestone paths, through hazel groves and meadows rich with Burren flowers and plants. Fire your imagination, while participating actively in rituals based on the four elements, earth, water, air and fire.

Accommodation: Loop Head Lightkeeper`s House

Perched on a clifftop which gazes out over the untamed Atlantic Ocean below, stands the historic Loop Head Lightkeeper's House. Historically the home for the keeper of the adjacent 17th century lighthouse station, the house was converted to a charming cottage for private stays after the lighthouse became fully automated in the 1990's. Surrounded by birds, wild flowers, cliffs and the Atlantic surf, guests looking to embrace the spectacular appeal of the rugged west coast won't be disappointed. A step outside offers magnificent 300-degree views of the sea, down to Kerry Head and Dingle, across the Shannon, and up the Clare coast to the Cliffs of Moher to the north. Loop Head Lightkeeper`s House: Clare

With amenities customary for furnished coastal cottages, such as oil-fired central heating, kitchen appliances, linens, and even a wood-burning stove, the Loop Head Lightkeeper's House offering a unique and comfortable stay set in the most breathtaking, wide-open backdrop that you can imagine.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
