With its fascinating ruins, magical art, open spaces, and abundance of tasty treats, Italy seems almost tailor-made for kids (not to mention their accompanying adults). Got a fussy eater? The homeland of pizza and gelato will turn them into a gourmet overnight. Got a sourpuss who thinks history is just boring old stuff? Fill their head with stories of gladiators and secret tunnels and watch how quickly the past comes to life. This family-focused itinerary blends discovery, sightseeing, and plenty of hands-on action in Rome, Florence, and Venice into a transformative experience they’ll remember forever.

Naturally, it all starts in Rome where you’ll have the chance to stretch your legs and refuel after your flight on a privately guided walking tour that takes in the city’s delightful atmosphere and delicious food. (Think pizza blanca, mortadella, and ice cream galore.) Next, take the kids back in time to the days of Ancient Rome on a private tour of the Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill where, according to legend, Romulus first settled what would later become the seat of an empire. Later, spend a pleasant half-day biking out to Rome’s famous Catacombs, a vast network of underground tunnels where early Christians buried their dead (don’t worry; all the bones are long gone!) before biking back along the ancient Appian Way with refreshments along the route. Next stop: Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. Here, you’ll step out on a family walking tour of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities accompanied by a private guide who will explain the significance of oft-photographed landmarks like Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Giotto's Campanile (bell tower). Florence’s food is as famous as its art, and the whole family will have the chance to try their hand at making some under the guidance of an expert chef at a half-day cooking class. (Save room for tiramisu!) The experience winds up in Venice, which you’ll explore on a private walking tour and gondola cruise before having a go at making glass artwork in an artists workshop on the island of Murano. ... Day 2: Rome

Departing on foot with a private guide, take a step back in time and discover the fascinating world of ancient Rome. Your children will be given a highly entertaining game booklet as your family learns everything about gladiators' life and their fighting techniques with a visit to the historic Colosseum, one of the world's most celebrated buildings. Built 2,000 years ago, this epic stadium formerly held gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and gaze out across the stadium floor imagining the roar of 80,000 boisterous spectators from ancient Rome! Learn of the power of senators end emperors of Ancient Rome, continuing through the Roman Forum, the center of Imperial Rome. Stroll the ancient Forum, passing the rostrum where Mark Anthony made his impassioned speech over the body of Julius Caesar. With history dating back well over two millennia, picture yourself as a citizen of ancient Rome, walking the site of triumphal processions, political and social debate, criminal trials and more. Your guide will maintain a perfect balance of fact and fun, to keep everyone interested!

Optional (Not Included):
With some time at leisure, why not set out to independently explore Rome's gelato scene for some gourmet Italian ice cream. Discover unique artisanal flavors like chili and chocolate, black sesame, or pear and gorgonzola. While new shops are always opening, and others drifting out of popularity, old favorites include 'San Crispino' near Trevi Fountain, or 'Ci gusta!' just steps away from the Pantheon.

Day 3: Rome

A private English-speaking driver will take you from your hotel, bringing you to the south of Rome where you'll meet up with your private guide, get outfitted with helmets and electric-assisted mountain bikes, and head out with the aim to go deep underground to visit Rome's famous Catacombs. Over 2,000 years ago, thousands of people were buried underground in the Catacombs. All bones have been removed, but you'll learn of countless amazing and creepy stories about this sacred burial place. Ride out on cycling paths for a safer and more comfortable cycling tour, where you can enjoy being outside of the city and away from the dense traffic of Rome. Once you reach the Catacombs, you'll join others and enter as a group, as private visits of this protected site are not possible. Explore the narrow, cavernous subterranean passageways, seeing the various burial chambers dug into the rock, lit just enough to maintain its spooky aura. After your visit, you'll ride back to central Rome along the ancient Appian Way, stopping for a cheese and wine break (soft drinks for children) in the Caffarella Park, a great way to finish your cycling adventure, before meeting your driver for a return transfer to your hotel.

Meet your private English-speaking assistant who will be waiting for you on the arrivals platform with a sign with your name on it. They will locate your awaiting private water taxi, and accompany you to your hotel for check-in.

The best way to leap into the heart of Venice is by enjoying a traditional gondola ride. At your hotel, meet up with your private guide who will show you to your private gondola and gondolier. Glide relaxingly through Venice's inner canals, the Grand Canal, and under the Rialto Bridge, hearing fascinating stories as you venture through Venice's classic waterways for 40 minutes. From there, you'll step back onto land where your children, with the help of their entertaining game booklet and your guide, will bring you from Rialto Bridge to the Bridge of Sighs, passing more of the city's highlights and curiosities, like the Bovolo Staircase for an amazing view of the city, the iconic Teatro La Fenice, and, last but not least, Saint Mark’s Square with the iconic Saint Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace.

Accommodation: Hotel L`Orologio Venezia

Housed in the San Polo district, Hotel L'Orologio Venezia sits quietly on the world famous Grand Canal, attracting beautiful views all around the hotel. Day 7: Venice

When it comes to glass, there's just no better place in the world than Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon that has been creating extraordinary works of glass for many centuries. Today you'll discover the excitement and joy of creating your own 2-hour Murano-style glass decoration in glass workshop in Venice, with a private glass making instructor. A private English-speaking assistant will walk you through scenic Venice, from your hotel to the South San Marco neighborhood where the workshop is held. After a few instructions and safety tips from your instructor, it will be your turn to create colorful glass tiles. You can do what you want, but for a perfect Venetian souvenir, you might want to recreate an iconic Venetian element such as St. Mark’s Campanile or a winged lion! During this workshop, your expert glass maker will teach you all the techniques, but will also perform a demonstration of glass blowing. Because glass has to cook for at least 24 hours, your creation will be delivered to your hotel in Venice in the following days. Shipment directly to your home can also be arranged at an additional charge. Return to your hotel on foot with the guidance of your private assistant.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
