From the living time capsule that is Rome to the astonishing beauty of the Amalfi Coast to the sensory delights of Tuscany and beyond, Italy is one of the easiest countries to lose oneself in. This enchanting journey touches all of its must-sees and -dos, wrapping the Colosseum and Pompeii, the quiet magic of Capri, San Gimignano’s bucolic splendor, and the wonders of Florence and Venice together into a seamless experience built to satisfy every whim.

It starts in Rome, capital of the ancient empire and modern Italy alike. With the help of a private guide and driver, you’ll get a glimpse of the city’s imperial past on a tour that takes you from the imposing ruins of the Colosseum to Palantine Hill to the grand Forum, the very center of political life in ancient times. Later, explore Vatican City (the world’s smallest country) and head down the Appian Way for a macabre encounter deep underground at the Catacombs, where early Christians buried their dead and worshipped in secret. From Rome, we head south to Sorrento, but not before pausing to explore the ruins of Pompeii, the doomed city buried beneath volcanic ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The scenic beauty of the Amalfi Coast is on full display later on a privately guided visit to two UNESCO-protected towns: cliffside Positano and charming Amalfi itself. Discover the magical island of Capri, home to beautiful villas, charming towns, and the fascinating Blue Grotto sea cave before bidding addio to Amalfi and returning north, bound for Florence. One of Europe’s most stunning cities, the cradle of the Renaissance is an art lover’s dream come to life. A private walking tour – with stops at Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, and Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s “David” – will introduce you to its charms, while a self-guided stroll down its handsome boutique-lined avenues will lift your spirits while lightening your wallet. Later, spend the day in the Tuscan countryside on a private excursion to Siena and San Gimignano, where you’ll taste local wines over lunch at a local farmhouse. The journey ends in romantic Venice, which you’ll explore first on foot with a private guide, and later by gondola at dusk on a private cruise through the city’s famous canals. But before you say goodbye, spend a delightful day learning the tricks of time-tested crafts straight from the artisans themselves on Murano and Burano, Venice’s glass- and lacework islands. ... Day 2: Rome

Today, you'll have an opportunity to let your mind wander, as you walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans. Meet your private guide and vehicle, and head to Rome's iconic Colosseum, one of the world's most celebrated buildings. Built 2,000 years ago, this epic stadium formerly held gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles. Gaze out across the stands and imagine the roar of 80,000 boisterous spectators from ancient Rome. Going one step farther, you'll have some very special access at the Colosseum, not easily acquired. Joining a small group of 25 participants plus a specialized Colosseum guide, you'll walk through the archway and onto the first of two restricted areas; the arena floor, where the infamous gladiatorial games were held. Then, descend into the Colosseum dungeons, another restricted area, to learn about the complex labyrinth that lived under the arena floor, filled with cages and prisons, where fighters and beasts awaited their fate. Back at ground level, reconvene with your private guide, who will lead you to another city icon: Palatine Hill; formerly an exclusive neighborhood which was home to political figures forming the backbone of the Roman Empire. Finally, descend into the grand Roman Forum, with the rostrum where Mark Anthony made his impassioned speech over the body of Julius Caesar. The Forum was the public center of Roman political life, where the people came together to debate the ancient policies and people that governed their lives. Afterward, enjoy a private return transfer to your hotel. Please note, the order of your tour may be adjusted to accommodate access to the exclusive Colosseum Underground area.

Day 3: Rome

Meet your private guide and driver, and depart on a full day tour, discovering Vatican City and the ancient Appian Way Catacombs. Enveloped by Rome, and as the smallest independent city-state in the world, the power and prestige of Vatican City, home to the Pope, is remarkable. Visit the Vatican Museums, discovering the most important collections, from the Museuo Pio Clementino and the Gallery of the Candelabras, the Tapestries, and the Maps, to the so-called rooms of Raphael in the apartment of Julius II, finally ending in the iconic Sistine Chapel, featuring the masterpiece ceiling painted by Michaelangelo, one of the most revered artistic works in human history. After, take to the grand St. Peter's Square, admiring the 16th century St. Peter's Basilica, the world's largest church, which you'll visit (if not closed due to religious ceremony). Leaving the Vatican, you'll head out along the ancient Appian Way, one of the most critical roads of the ancient Roman Republic, and head deep underground to visit Rome's famous Catacombs. Over 2,000 years ago, thousands of early Christians were buried underground here, and while all bones have been removed, you'll learn of countless amazing stories about this sacred burial place. Once you reach the Catacombs, you'll join others and enter as a group, as private visits of this protected site are not possible. Explore the narrow, cavernous subterranean passageways, seeing the various burial chambers dug into the rock, lit just enough to maintain its somber aura.

Day 4: Rome - Naples - Sorrento

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a train station transfer.

Depart by train from Rome to Naples. Approximate travel time is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Meet your private driver for a transfer to Sorrento. En route, you'll stop at the legendary site of Pompeii, where a private local guide will take you on a 2-hour visit of this important historic site. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Pompeii was completely destroyed in the catastrophic 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius, leaving the ancient Roman city buried under 15 to 20 feet of volcanic ash, and preserved therein. Modern archaeologists have since uncovered the remains of the former city, leaving an incredibly vast, and somewhat somber site to explore. Walk through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see the baths, forums and villas built by the prosperous Romans over 150 years before the eruption. Marvel at the fabulously preserved fresco paintings which adorn the walls and floors of the villas. See the ancient amphitheaters, gladiator barracks, and houses of former Pompeii residents, before continuing on your drive to Sorrento.

Accommodation: Antiche Mura

Meet your private guide and driver and depart on a half-day discovery of the Amalfi Coast today, visiting two of the iconic UNESCO World Heritage-listed towns which beckon global travelers with their picturesque beauty; Positano and Amalfi. Follow the scenic coastline to the cliffside town Positano, made popular largely by writer John Steinbeck. Wander this colorful town's steep and narrow streets, as you soak in the aura of this historic fishing village which Steinbeck suggested, "bites deep". Look for the region's renowned orange, lemon and olive groves on the terraced gardens of the town before continuing along the breathtaking and winding road to the popular holiday town of Amalfi, backed by dramatic cliffs. The town's 11th century cathedral is a celebrated for its medieval architecture, a fine example of the Norman-meets-Byzantine style that was once dominant in Italy's south.

Refraction of sunlight into the cave illuminates the water with a brilliant blue color - a spectacular sight to behold. A private guide will be waiting for you on your arrival to Capri, taking you along winding streets and into the main square, Piazza Umberto, with a quaint white church and several open-air cafes where you can sit and watch the world drift by. Leading off the square are medieval looking alleyways and arcades full of shops selling the handcrafts of the island such as clothing, ceramics and jewelry made from coral and gold. You'll also visit Villa San Michele, a beautiful early 20th century residence built on the ruins of the Roman Emperor Tiberius' villa, with commanding views of Capri town and it's harbor. Enjoy the relaxed pace of your day before you depart back to port, and onward back to Sorrento.

Working with Danny Shanahan was a real pleasure. He was lovely, very professional and knowledgeable. Our trip was just so enjoyable and stress free. The hotels were perfect, the restaurants booked by Kensington were authentic and food was excellent. The flamenco show was so much fun and the venue was relaxing and intimate. Our guides were prompt, smart and passionate about their country. A really wonderful group of individuals. It was very reassuring to know we always had a person on the ground to call if necessary. This was an A-plus trip and we will always have wonderful memories of a beautiful country and it’s warm and welcoming citizens.

Kensington gave us exactly the vacation we asked for and more. The hotels were the BEST - centrally located with all the amenities, complimentary breakfast and accommodating staff. The guides were prompt, knowledgeable and willing to bend with our requests. The Welcome Packages held everything we needed for each country.
