Two empires live inside of Norway, the glacier-carved fantasyland perched between northern Europe and the Norwegian Sea: the winter kingdom, blanketed in snow, and its summertime rival, a short-lived domain of green meadows warmed by the Midnight Sun. This exclusive Explorers Club Collection winter edition experience invites you discover Norway’s northern Finnmark region, preserve of the Sami people, before pushing further into pure Arctic bliss, with a mutli-day snowmobile experience in the snowy Svalbard peninsula. Please note, the travel window for this journey mid February to end of April.

With the winter’s fresh snow upon the land, there’s no better way to begin than a dogsled taxi ride to the storybook Snowhotel in Kirkenes, a frosty bucket list experience where you’ll sleep in a room built entirely of ice and snow. Head out onto the ice on a private snowmobile-assisted fishing trip for the revered king crab, then take a dogsled out into the wilderness to witness the fascinating natural ballet of the northern lights. Next, embark on a multi-day snowmobile experience as you journey into the Arctic Circle to Svalbard, a vast archipelago of indescribable remoteness and unspoiled natural beauty. With an eye on the horizon for polar bears, you’ll stay at the remote Isfjord Radio – a radio station transformed into an exclusive boutique hotel – from where you’ll snowmobile out to the rim of the west coast, embracing the Fritjof Glacier, as well as Barentsburg, an isolated Russian mining town. The experience concludes in Olso, the stylish Norwegian capital, where you’ll learn Viking history at the Viking Ship Museum and dig into the city’s food culture at the indoor food hall Mathallen Oslo. ... Day 1: Kirkenes

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

After collecting your luggage, a special transfer awaits - you'll meet a driver and team of huskies for a private transfer to your hotel by dogsled! In the snow-covered landscape of the north, dog sledding has always been considered an efficient form of transportation. It is no surprise then that a “dog-taxi” transfer service has been launched to collect SnowHotel guests from Kirkenes, one of Norway’s most northerly airports.

Size matters. The red King Crab is not only the largest, but also the most delicious shellfish you'll ever have the chance of tasting. Setting out privately, along with master guides, you'll be ushered out onto the thick ice of the snow-covered fjord by a snowmobile sledge, for a totally unforgettable experience. This is your chance to catch, learn how to cook, and most importantly eat the mysterious Arctic King Crab. One of the most sought after meals in top restaurants, and yet here, you get to eat the best and the freshest, pulled from the fjord in front of your eyes. You'll take part in helping to saw the hole in the ice and bring up the catch. You'll get to see how the crab is prepared by your master guide, and you will be taken by snowmobile sledge (an experience in itself) to a beautiful farmhouse by the lake. It's here, by a cozy log fire, that your King Crab meal awaits. Although presentation is simple, the superb, white leg meat and claws with their particularly juicy and naturally sweet taste make this meal in a league of its own. Transfers to and from your hotel in Kirkenes are included, and warm clothing and a helmet is provided.

Accommodation: Snowhotel

Snowhotel Kirkenes is situated 5 miles outside Kirkenes in the secluded wilds of Northern Norway, providing guests the truest sense of beautiful arctic wilderness. It's a world where you sleep in snow, walk on snow, and drive a snowmobile or a dogsled on snow. Snow is even served in the restaurant! Every room is like a small treasure, and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable night. All of the rooms have a different theme from Arctic culture or nature. Dine at Høyloftet Restaurant, featuring great food and a panoramic window with an impressive view of the fjord. The Bingen restaurant used to be a sheep barn, but is now converted to a cozy restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere for breakfast and dinner, and Gabba Restaurant is an obvious choice for lunch. The Icebar is one of the “coolest” bars in town, and serves ice cold vodka in glasses made of ice!

Day 2: Kirkenes

Ever fancied the opportunity to go snowmobiling in the Norwegian arctic wilderness? Here's your chance, and no previous experience is required. A wonderful journey awaits you on state of the art snowmobiles. With a private transfer from your hotel,  arrive at an old Norwegian farmhouse where you'll be kitted out in warm protective clothing and provided with a lesson on how to handle a snowmobile. Setting out through the snowy Arctic wilderness with a private guide, you'll ride with two people per snowmobile, and get to switch between being passenger and driver (valid driver's license required), while stopping periodically for some photo opportunities. During your excursion, you'll be taken to a remote location where a small picnic lunch will be set up for you, made from delicious local ingredients.

This evening, eager huskies will bring you and your private guide deep into the wilderness in order to better your chances of seeing the majestic Northern Lights! You will be making many stops along the way to observe the polar sky, one of which will include a nice picnic-style dinner served by your guide. While the lights are a natural phenomenon and therefore can never be guaranteed, your experienced guide will monitor the conditions and take you to the areas most likely to produce sightings of this incredible symphony of lights.

Day 3: Kirkenes - Longyearbyen

Meet your taxi driver for a private airport transfer.

After collecting your luggage, your private guide will be waiting for you in the arrivals section of the airport holding a sign with your name on it.

Board a flight in Kirkenes en route to Longyearbyen. Please note, given the remote nature of these locations, approximate flight times average around 6 hours, and may include up to 3 stops.

Departing with your private guide and vehicle, you'll head out for a tour of the village of Longyearbyen, with a modest population of 2,000, and its legendary coal mines. Of the seven original mines started in and around 1906, there is only one remaining mine that is still producing coal for use in Norway’s singular coal-powered power plant. As for the other six mines, upon entry you get the feeling that they are still in operation because of how the miners who worked there left everything as is when the mines were shut down. Experience the most authentic mining atmosphere that Norway has to offer.

Accommodation: Basecamp Hotel

At the heart of Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world, Basecamp Hotel embodies the spirit of the authentic arctic trapper. See the walls, covered with driftwood, sealskins, maps, pictures, and objects that illustrate the past and the present of life in the Arctic. Prepare your mind and body for the wilderness by relaxing in the glass-roofed lounge looking up at the sky filled with Northern Lights, or losing yourself in the stories of the arctic explorers. Each of the 16 uniquely-styled rooms have a beautiful view over the town, towards the mountains surrounding the valley of Longyeardalen.

Day 4: Longyearbyen - Kapp Linne

You'll be met in the lobby this morning by your private basecamp guide, who will take you through the details of your upcoming journey, such as possible routes and the equipment needed, you'll suit up with the provided warm clothing and climb aboard your snowmobile. Following a quick tutorial regarding the operation of these machines, you'll set out across the Arctic snow into the wilderness towards Kapp Linne and the Isfjord Radio Hotel. Enjoy an expedition lunch surrounded by the arctic silence and vast white landscape, and before evening you will have arrived at your remote boutique hotel, the last frontier before Greenland.

Accommodation: Isfjord Radio Hotel

Once an outpost of solitude, now a hotel at the end of the world. The Isfjord Radio Hotel, built in 1993 for radio operators, has been converted into a remote wilderness adventure lodge. It might not look like much from the outside but as you enter you discover a modern, luxurious experiental hotel contrasting with the rough surrounding coastal landscape. It becomes easy to forget where you are, but a quick dip in the arctic ocean will surely bring you right back to reality! Before you know it, night has fallen and, enveloped by the arctic silence, you are presented with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the natural wealth of the "empty" landscape within the last bastion of warmth and comfort for miles upon miles.

Day 5: Kapp Linne

Along with your private expedition guide, you'll set out on snowmobiles into the beautiful landscape of Spitsbergen. Your route will be selected by your guide based on the weather and snow conditions. If the weather is good, you'll head south toward the Fritjof Glacier, named after renowned Arctic explorer Fritjof Nansen, and have an expedition lunch served out in the field. If you're lucky, you may even spot the King of the Arctic, the polar bear, hunt for seals on the ice. You'll return to the Isfjord Radio Hotel in the afternoon with some time to relax before dinner.

Day 6: Kapp Linne - Longyearbyen

Check out from the Isfjord Radio Hotel, and depart by snowmobile back to Longyearbyen. Your exact route will be selected by your private guide, based on the conditions of the day. If the weather is favorable, you'll make a stop en route in the Russian settlement of Barentsburg, a small mining city with only about 350 residents. You’ll go ashore and take a tour around town, getting a sense for life in an isolated arctic village before a light lunch is served in the local brewery. You'll arrive in Longyearbyen during the afternoon for check-in.
