The eye-popping scenery of Slovenia’s alpine forests and fertile river valleys rank among Europe’s most beautiful and least traveled. Tucked away at the edge of the mighty Alps, this relatively small nation is quickly emerging as a boutique travel giant among active explorers and leisure travelers alike, offering a perfect balance of outdoor adventure, fascinating urban life, and creature comforts. Come discover nature at its purest before word gets around.

After arriving in Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, the tour kicks off near Kranj with an exploration of local cooking at a cozy 18th-century manor. Next, head up into the Alps to the shepherd’s oasis at Velika Planina for the chance to traditional herdsman’s lunch before traveling to the lush pastures of the Logar Valley for a full day spent leisurely trekking its fields and mountains with a private guide. Near Bled, once the preferred retreat of Habsburg aristocrats, you’ll visit the gorgeous clifftop castle and the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria, a church built on a small island in the middle of the lake before meeting a local beekeeper to learn about one of Slovenia’s premier exports: honey. The Soca Valley region is rich in both natural beauty (think turquoise waters, rolling meadows, and imposing limestone peaks) and savage history (the disastrous Battle of Caporetto, featured in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, was fought here). Here, you’ll raft the river and hike the hills with a private guide before visiting the local war museum. Next, explore the Tolmin Gorge inside Triglav National Park en route to Brda, the heart of Slovenia’s wine country, for a tasting at a local winery and a visit to the incredible Postojna Cave complex. Finally, return to the capital and embark on a private half-day walking tour of charming Ljubljana, taking in its historic sites, including the open-air central market, elegant Ljubljana Castle, and the city’s network of bridges and public squares. ... Day 2: Kranj - Logar Valley

Today you will drive with your English speaking driver-guide to Komenda to visit a ceramicist's studio. Continue to Kamniska Vistrica and enjoy a trek to Velika Planina, the last shepherd's oasis. The herdsmen’s settlement is one of few last settlements of such size in Europe and has a distinct architecture, which symbolizes Velika Planina. The name of the cottage in the Kamnik part of Velika planina is “a herdsman hut” or “a shepherd’s home”, and the pine shingles are called “šinkel”. The settlement is revived every June when herdsmen return to the settlement and tend to their cattle until September. Here you will have the chance to taste dairy products and enjoy a typical herdsmen’s lunch of sour milk and hard-boiled corn mush before you return by cable car.

Continue your day with a drive to your next overnight locale, Logar Valley, one of the most beautiful Alpine glacial valleys in Europe which extends into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps from the north. A part of the Solcavsko region, tradition and nature have found harmony here, serving as a good example of sustainable development. The Logar Valley Landscape Park has received a "Future in the Alps" award for the successful management of a protected area, and is a stunningly beautiful natural parkland. Enjoy the opportunity for relaxation en route to your hotel, as you take in the peaceful ambiance of the natural beauty.

Day 5: Kobarid

This morning you will be driven to Bovec, and Soca Valley. The Soca's stunning turquoise hue flows for about 60 miles against a backdrop of imposing limestone mountains cloaked in dense forests, lush meadows rich in wildflowers and a clutch of small towns and villages, including Tolmin, Kobarid and Bovec. Besides its rich history - the WW1 Soca Front was one of the bloodiest mountain battles ever known - the valley is now a hiking, kayaking, and fly-fishing haven with much of the area set aside as part of the Triglav National Park. Rafting on the Soca River has for many years been a hallmark of the Soca Valley. It is suitable for all swimmers over 15 years old. With highly trained and friendly guides you will descend the section between Boka and Trnovo, the most attractive part of the Soca.

Bovec, the valley of inspiration is ideal for a hike where you can recharge your body and soul. This area is blessed with well-preserved and wild nature, mountains, the emerald river with its tributaries, the gentle and unique combination of Alpine and Mediterranean climates, centuries of preserved tradition, and genuine people.

After lunch you will visit Kobarid the place of the biggest alpine battle in the World War I. One of the most renowned historical places in Slovenia was already inhabited in the Hallstat period and prospered in the Roman period. The town is mainly known for the aftermath of the Battle of Kobarid in October 1917, which placed Kobarid on the world map. Kobarid is known for the famous Battle of Caporetto, where the Italian retreat was documented by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms. The Kobarid Museum presents the story of these historical events and in 1993 it received the Council of Europe Museum Award. Kobarid is also the culinary capital of the Primorska region boasting many excellent restaurants.

The chute of the Tolminka River is about two hundred meters long and five to ten meters wide. The well-known "Devil's Bridge” over which the Tolmin - Cadrg road passes arches sixty meters above the Tolminka, and above it there is the entrance to the Dante Cave.

Continue towards the very Western corner of Slovenia where beautiful wine growing region Goriska Brda is stretching on 72 square km. Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

  • Keith M — July 13, 2019 — Europe

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
