Day 8: El Calafate

Departing from the hotel, you'll venture out across some of the 3000 hectares of property on a low intensity trek to a lagoon which is frequented by colonies of flamingos. Walk over the grassy, sloping terrain of La Anita valley, to the calm feeding grounds of these peculiar pink birds - often not associated with cooler climates, like that which is found in Patagonia. The coloration of the feathers on flamingos is a direct result of the carotene proteins ingested with their plankton-rich diet. Enjoy a stroll around the lagoon, study their behavior, and take some great photographs before returning back to Eolo. This trek can be performed on your own, or with a free guide from Eolo - whatever you are most comfortable with.

Set out over grassy and hilly terrain, leaving the hotel behind as you trek across the 3,000 hectares of property owned by the lodge, with sights set on the Cerro Frias summit and lookout. This intermediate trek is high-intensity, as you venture up into the mountains, and generally takes between five and six hours to complete. Once you make it to the summit, you'll enjoy an excellent vantage point for a sweeping view of La Anita valley to the east. This trek can be performed on your own, or with a free guide from Eolo.

You will travel about 2 hours to reach the Glaciers National Park and from the beginning, you will see this trip has pleasant surprises! Already in the outskirts of El Calafate, you can see the Argentine Lake with its Round Bay populated with an important variety of birds such as the black neck swan, flamencos, duck steams, gallaretas, the cauquén and coirones. You will enter about 26 km into the Glaciers National Park where you will observe the arboreal vegetation formed by ñires, sour cherries, and lengas. As well as some flowers of diverse colors like the outstanding “notro” with its intense red color.
